General procedure: To a solution ofsodium 4-hydroxynaphthalene-1-sulfonate (2.0 g, 8.12 mmol) inethanol (6 mL) was added water (6 mL), sodium hydroxide (813 mg,20.31 mmol) and bromoethane (1.33 g, 12.18 mmol).
