Pest control with drip-applied dimethyl disulfide and chloropicrin in plastic-mulched tomato (Solanum lycopersicum L.)

BACKGROUND Dimethyl disulfide (DMDS) is used as a preplant soil fumigant for weed and soilborne pathogen control in plasticulture vegetable crops. The objective of this research was to determine the control efficacy of emulsifiable concentrate (EC) formulation of DMDS or DMDS + chloropicrin (Pic) on weed and Fusarium wilt in tomato (Solanum lycopersicum L.) plasticulture. RESULTS The effective DMDS rates required to provide 50% (ER50) control of purple nutsedge (Cyperus rotundus L.) were 210 and 340 kg ha(-1) at 4 weeks after fumigation (WAF) in fall 2017 and fall 2018, respectively, while these values increased to 348 and >467 kg ha(-1), respectively, at 12 WAF. The ER50 values of DMDS + Pic were 150 and 240 kg ha(-1) at 4 WAF in fall 2017 and fall 2018, respectively, while these values increased to 255 and 450 kg ha(-1), respectively, at 12 WAF. DMDS + Pic was generally more effective than DMDS for C. rotundus control. The high rates of DMDS or DMDS + Pic provided adequate C. rotundus control in early season but failed to provide effective control by season end. In addition, DMDS + Pic injections through drip tape effectively reduced Fusarium oxysporum f. sp. lycopersici (FOL) inoculum while DMDS alone was generally ineffective. CONCLUSION Injection of the EC formulation of DMDS or DMDS + Pic through drip tape should have been provided a viable option for C. rotundus and Fusarium wilt control in plastic-mulched tomato. Effect of Synthesis Parameters on the Color Performance of Blue CoAl2O4 Ceramic Pigment

Blue ceramic nano pigment of CoAl2O4 has been synthesized by a co-precipitation method. The reactions conditions (stirring time and stoichiometric ratio) for the preparation of precipitated compound and the calcination conditions (temperature and time) have been optimized for the proper particle synthesis. In addition, the effects of different capping agents (pyrrolidinone, N-cetyl-N,N,N-trimethylammonium bromide, triethylamine, and oleic acid) on the characteristic features of CoAl2O4 have been analyzed by X-ray diffraction and color analysis. Synthesized samples have been identified as spinel (CoAl2O4). The spectroscopic results indicate that minor changes have been seen and the desired electronic transitions in Co2+ in tetrahedral coordination have been achieved. The color performance of pigments has been increased and particle sizes have been decreased with the capping agent addition. The lowest b* values have been obtained in the TEA added samples. The crystallite sizes have been estimated by using the Scherrer equation. In comparison of the capping agent added samples, the smallest particles have been obtained in CTAB added samples.

HHIP Overexpression Suppresses Human Gastric Cancer Progression and Metastasis by Reducing Its CpG Island Methylation

Human hedgehog-interacting protein (HHIP), a negative regulator of hedgehog (HH) signaling pathway, has been reported to be dysregulated in many types of cancer, including gastric cancer. However, the inhibitory role of HHIP as well as the underlying molecular mechanism of HHIP regulation in gastric cancer haven’t been fully elucidated yet. In this study, we demonstrated that HHIP overexpression significantly suppressed the proliferation and invasion of AGS cells evaluated by 3-(4,5-dimethylthiazol-2-yl)-2,5-diphenyltetrazolium bromide (MTT) and transwell assays, respectively. Interestingly, methylation-specific polymerase chain reaction (MS-PCR, MSP) showed that HHIP overexpression dramatically decreased its de novo promoter methylation levels in AGS cells. Furthermore, HHIP expression was higher in adjacent non-cancerous tissue compared to matched gastric cancer tissue. High HHIP level was negatively correlated with metastasis (p = 0.035) but not local recurrence (p = 0.58). Taken together, our study suggested that HHIP can modulate gastric cancer progression and metastasis via regulation of its de novo promoter methylation levels in a feedback manner. Lower HHIP levels is positively associated with gastric cancer metastasis, which not only indicates HHIP could be served as a protective marker for gastric cancer, but also suggests restoring HHIP expression might be a potential therapeutic strategy for clinical treatment.

Enhanced miscibility and strain resistance of blended elastomer/pi-conjugated polymer composites through side chain functionalization towards stretchable electronics

This work presents improved compatibility in an elastomer/pi-conjugated polymer blend through side chain functionalization of the electronic polymer. Poly[(3-(6-bromohexyl)thiophene)-ran-(3-hexylthiophene)] (P3Br(x)HT, x = 0%-100%) was synthesized (i) to improve miscibility with polybutadiene (PB) elastomer through altered pi-pi interactions and (ii) to covalently bond across phase-segregated interfaces. Functionalization led to morphology with reduced domain sizes to improve crack onset strain from 7% to 40%. Furthermore, UV-activated crosslinking reinforced mechanically weak interfaces and yielded at least an additional 40% increase in crack onset strain. Charge mobility in PB/P3Br(x)HT organic field-effect transistors showed minimal dependence on bromide concentration and no negative effects from crosslinking. Functionalization was an effective method to reduce brittleness in PB/P3Br(x)HT blends through morphology modification and crosslinking to improve stability towards strain for potential stretchable electronic applications. Understanding the Basics of Electron Transfer and Cyclic Voltammetry of Potassium Ferricyanide – An Outer Sphere Heterogeneous Electrode Reaction

Understanding and controlling the processes occurring at electrode/electrolyte interface are very important in optimizing energy conversion devices. Cyclic voltammetry is a very sophisticated and accurate electroanalytical method enables us to explore the mechanism of such electrode reactions. In this work, electrochemical experiments using cyclic voltammetry were performed in aqueous KCl solution containing potassium ferricyanide, K-3[Fe(CN)(6)] at a glassy carbon disc working electrode and the mechanism of the reactions is highlighted. The CV measurements shows that the ferricyanide [Fe(CN)(6)](3-) reduction to ferrocyanide [Fe(CN)(6)](4-) and the reverse oxidation process follows an outer sphere electrode reaction mechanism. Voltammetry analysis further indicates that the reaction is reversible and diffusion controlled one electron transfer electrochemical process. The peak currents due to [Fe(CN)(6)](4-) oxidation and the peak current due to [Fe(CN)(6)](3-) reduction increase with increase of concentration and scan rate increase. The diffusion co-efficient was determined by applying Randles-Sevcik equation. The report could be helpful for university students to understand the basics of electron transfer in redox processes and cyclic voltammetry.

Electrochemical and analytical performance of cathodically pretreated boron-doped diamond electrode for the determination of oxazolidinone antibiotic linezolid in cationic surfactant media

The electrochemical oxidation of an oxazolidinone class of antibiotic, Linezolid (LNZ) was studied in aqueous as well as aqueous/surfactant media on a commercially available boron-doped diamond (BDD) electrode pretreated cathodically. By using cyclic voltammetry, LNZ showed two couples of oxidation/reduction peak in aqueous solutions. The electrode process is pH-dependent and controlled by diffusion. The compound yielded two well-separated oxidation steps in acidic, neutral and alkaline media by employing square-wave voltammetry. The sensitivity of the voltammetric measurements was improved when the cationic surfactant, cetyltrimethylammonium bromide (CTAB) was present in the electrolyte solution at pH 4.0. In Britton-Robinson buffer containing 0.9 mM CTAB, the calibration curves were linear for both oxidation peaks (Ia and IIa) over concentration ranges of 0.25-6.41 mu g mL(-1) (0.74-19.27 mu M), with detection limits of 0.05 mu g mL(-1) (0.15 mu M) for Ia, and 0.12 mu g mL(-1) (0.34 mu M) for IIa. The practical applicability of developed methodology was tested in pharmaceutical formulations.

On-Surface Intramolecular Dehalogenation of Vicinal Dibromides for the Direct Formation of C-C Double Bonds

The intramolecular dehalogenation reaction as an essential step is generally involved in the deprotection of carbon-carbon double bonds in solution chemistry. However, harsh reaction conditions often limit the functional group compatibility and cause the selectivity problems. In comparison with traditional solution reactions, on-surface chemical reactions always occur on metal substrates, which could serve as catalysts to effectively reduce the reaction barriers in many cases. On the other hand, on-surface intermolecular dehalogenative homocoupling reactions have been extensively demonstrated, while, to our knowledge, intramolecular dehalogenation reactions are less discussed on surfaces. Herein, by the combination of high-resolution scanning tunneling microscopy imaging and density functional theory calculations, we introduce the vicinal dibromo group on chemically different surfaces, such as Cu(110), Ag(110), and Au(111), respectively, to investigate the generality of intramolecular dehalogenation reactions. As a result, we successfully achieved the direct formation of C-C double-bonded products in a facile manner on all three surfaces.

Rare concurrent ocular myasthenia gravis and Graves’ ophthalmopathy in a man with Poland syndrome: a case report

Background Ocular myasthenia gravis and Graves’ ophthalmopathy are autoimmune diseases that are mediated by membrane receptors and share many identical clinical processes. Poland syndrome is a rare congenital deformity characterized by defects of the ipsilateral hand and the chest wall, and it is usually associated with hypoplasia of ipsilateral pectoral muscles and homolateral breast. However, to the best of our knowledge, the co-occurrence of these diseases has never been reported. In this study, we present a man with Poland syndrome who was diagnosed with Graves’ ophthalmopathy and ocular myasthenia gravis in succession. Case presentation A 43-year-old man presented with bilateral upper eyelid ptosis, bilateral eye protrusion, bilateral eye movement disorder and malformation of the right hand. Asymmetrical malformation of the chest wall and ipsilateral hand deformity were shown as Poland syndrome. He was diagnosed with ocular myasthenia gravis and Graves’ ophthalmopathy on the basis of clinical manifestations and laboratory examinations, including bilateral exophthalmos and progressive asymmetrical ophthalmoparesis without pupillary dysfunction, positive autoantibody tests, repetitive nerve stimulation tests, and computed tomography scans. Treatments with pyridostigmine bromide, thymectomy, and prednisone led to partial clinical improvement. After 13 months of follow-up, the symptoms of drooping eyelids were partially improved, but the eyeball protrusion and right hand deformity remained unchanged. Conclusions We report the first case of co-occurrence of ocular myasthenia gravis, Graves’ ophthalmopathy, and Poland syndrome. Genetic predisposition and immune dysregulation might be the pathogenesis of the association.

Nitromethane as a surrogate cyanating agent: 7-N,N-dimethylamino-4-hydroxycoumarin-catalyzed, metal-free synthesis of alpha-iminonitriles

An efficient, metal/alkali-cyanide free approach for the synthesis of alpha-iminonitriles via kinetically controlled, base-mediated and 1,3-diketone-catalyzed reaction is reported. The preparation of target compounds was realized by condensation of substituted anilines and aldehydes in nitromethane as a surrogate cyanating agent and as a solvent. This strategy was further improved by replacing aldehydes and nitromethane with beta-nitrostyrene and ethanol, respectively, rendering the methodology greener. The catalytic role played by 1,3-diketones such as 7-N,N-dimethylamino-4-hydroxycoumarin in this three-component reaction was investigated, and a plausible mechanism was proposed based on control experiments.
