Expanding the Scope of Water-Stable Rhenium(V)-NHC Complexes – Synthesis, Characterization, and Derivatization

The synthesis of novel Re-V-NHC oxo complexes bearing a tridentate scorpionate NHC ligand is reported. One-pot preparation of AgBr/AgIO3 photocatalysts: Effects of CTAB amount on the morphology and photocatalytic performance

AgBr/AgIO3 composite photocatalysts were prepared through a one-pot AgBr precipitation on the surface AgIO3 with a wide band gap. As the morphology control agent and Br- source, the Cetyltrimethyl Ammonium Bromide (CTAB) addition greatly influenced the morphology and photocatalytic performance. The morphologies of the product changed from plate-like particles to fine ones with increasing amount of CTAB. The photocatalytic organic dye degradation and sterilization performances of the composites were investigated using Rhodamine B (RhB) and Staphylococcus aureus as target pollutants. Whether a xenon lamp or a low-energy Light Emitting Diode (LED) was used as the light source, the AgBr/AgIO3 composites had a better visible light catalytic degradation performance than pure AgBr and AgIO3. The RhB degradation efficiency reached 100% under xenon lamp light irradiation for 50 min, which was 3.95 times higher than that of pure AgBr. Simultaneously, the AgBr/AgIO3 composites had an excellent photocatalytic performance against S. aureus. After 50 min LED light irradiation, the S. aureus inactivation efficiency reached 94.3%. The combination of AgBr and AgIO3 significantly enhanced the visible light absorption and photocatalytic stability, and enabled high transfer and separation of photogenerated electron-hole pairs. The addition of CTAB reduced the size of AgIO3 nanoparticles and increased the contact area with pollutant molecules and bacteria, thereby pointing out the prospective applications of silver based photocatalysts in industrial and medical wastewater.

This paper aimed to study the anomalous fluctuation of halogens with respect to the pollution status in surface water (w), pore water (p), and sediments (s) of Lake Mariout. It provided a framework for understanding the distribution of dissolved and precipitated halogen salts related to the pollution status of the lake. The study cleared out that bromide was only the most abundant halogen in the three studied partitions. On contrast, sediment’s partition contained the lowest chloride content. Fluoride minerals, especially, fluorapatites and carbonate-fluorapatite (FAP and CFAP), had high Saturation Index (SI) values in surface water (42.77-51.95 and 16.04-60.89, respectively) and in pore water (51.26-54.60 and 17.52-78.33, respectively). Bromide and chloride were mainly found in the soluble forms in the surface water and pore waters. Iodide salts, (Ca(IO3)(2) and Ca(IO3)(2).6H(2)O), were moderately precipitated in surface and pore waters. Thus, SI content reflected that halogens, especially fluoride and iodide, played a vital role in reducing lake pollution. Fluorite (CaF2) and sellaite (MgF2) could only be formed in pore water, while calcite and aragonite could be deposited from surface water. In addition, Cl was mainly found in the forms of NaCl, CaCl2, MgCl2, and KCl in surface and pore waters. The multivariate analysis revealed that fluoride precipitate may serve in decreasing the dissolved salt pollution. Multivariate analysis showed that in the long run, the fluoride precipitation in FAP and CFAP can significantly adsorb and absorb various pollutants and can protect the lake from pollution. The ecological risk assessment conducted by calculating the enrichment factor (EF) showed that the lake was still unpolluted. Regarding human health risks, at appropriate levels of human health and safety, the hazard quotient (HQ) and hazard index (HI) of halogens found to be lower than these reported levels. Hence, ingestion and dermal absorption routes of halogens by surface water and sediments did not pose any adverse effects to population reflecting uncontaminated status of Lake Mariout.

The impact of surfactants on the stability and thermal conductivity of graphene oxide de-ionized water nanofluids

The effects of three different surfactants were analyzed on the stability and thermal conductivity of GO/de-ionized water nanofluids. One surfactant was cationic, cetyltrimethyl ammonium bromide (CTAB), one was anionic, sodium dodecyl sulfate (SDS), and one was nonionic, TritonX-100 (TX-100). These were added to synthesized graphene oxide (GO) prepared in de-ionized water at different concentrations (0.01, 0.05, 0.1, 0.15, 0.2, and 0.25 mass%). The transient hot-wire technique was employed to measure the thermal conductivity of all nanofluids at 20-40 degrees C. The stability of the GO/de-ionized water nanofluids without a surfactant was better than that of nanofluids with a surfactant. The stability and dispersion of the nanofluid with SDS were considerably better than nanofluids with the other two surfactants. All nanofluids without a surfactant had higher thermal conductivity than de-ionized water at all temperatures. An increase in the GO concentration from 0.01 to 0.2 mass% improved thermal conductivity by 3.05 and 22.03% at 20 degrees C, respectively. A further increase to 0.25 mass% caused a 23.73% increase in thermal conductivity.

To this end, zinc bromide was immobilized by graphitic carbon nitride (gCN) and then supported on carbon fibers. Meanwhile, the crystal structure, types of chemical bonding, surface morphologies, and electronic transmission of the prepared catalyst were also investigated. Furthermore, the catalytic performance was evaluated by the cycloaddition reactions of styrene oxide and CO2, a satisfactory result of the moderate yield of 50-90% with a good selectivity (> 99%) was obtained. Finally, a credible mechanism of the reaction was proposed.

A facile surfactant assisted hydrothermal synthesis of ZnO and graphene loaded ZnO for efficient photocatalytic self-cleaning

Superhydrophilicity and photocatalysis are of great importance for self-cleaning applications. We report the synthesis of ZnO and ZnO loaded graphene nanostructures at different pH values with exposed polar facets by a simple hydrothermal method. Cetyltrimethylammonium bromide is used as surfactant and the synthesis is carried out without the aid of high temperature and demonstrated to have a superior photocatalytic activity. We observed a reduction in band gap for graphene loaded ZnO samples. Further, a one-step spin coating method is used for the preparation of optically transparent and photoinduced superhydrophilic ZnO hybrid films. We investigated the effect of cetyltrimethylammonium bromide capping agent on crystal growth and morphology of as synthesised samples. An effective improvement in photocatalytic activity of the nanohybrid (similar to 100%) compared to pure ZnO (85%) is observed within 150 min. This can be attributed to the synergetic interaction of the components of the hybrid. Also, the hybrid samples coated on the glass substrate exhibits good transparency and superhydrophilicity upon UV irradiation. An unexpected transmittance as high as 84%-97% throughout most of the visible light region of the spectrum of the hybrid samples along with good photocatalytic efficiency and photoinduced superhydrophilicity makes the samples more suitable for self-cleaning applications.

Versatile and scalable synthesis of cyclic organic carbonates under organocatalytic continuous flow conditions

The benchmark route for the preparation of cyclic organic carbonates starts from toxic, volatile and unstable epoxides. In this work, cyclic organic carbonates are prepared according to alternative sustainable and intensified continuous flow conditions from the corresponding 1,2-diols. The process utilizes dimethyl carbonate (DMC) as a low toxicity carbonation reagent and relies on the organocatalytic activity of widely available and cheap organic ammonium and phosphonium salts. Glycerol is selected as a model substrate for preliminary optimization with a library of homogeneous ammonium and phosphonium salts. The nature of the anion dramatically influences the catalytic activity, while the nature of the cation does not impact the reaction. Upon optimization, glycerol carbonate is obtained in 95% conversion and 79% selectivity within 3 min residence time at 180 degrees C (11 bar) with 3.5 mol% of tetrabutylammonium bromide as the organocatalyst. A straightforward liquid-liquid extraction procedure enables both the purification of glycerol carbonate and the recycling of the homogeneous catalyst. The conditions are amenable to refined and crude bio-based glycerol, although conversions are lower in the latter case. Control experiments suggest that water present in the crude samples induces significant hydrolysis of glycerol carbonate. The reaction conditions are then successfully applied on a wide variety of substrates, affording the corresponding cyclic carbonates in overall good to excellent yields (20 examples, 45-95%). The substrate scope notably encompasses bio-based starting materials such as glycerol ethers and erythritol-derived diols. In-line NMR is featured as a qualitative analytical tool for real-time reaction monitoring. The scalability of this carbonation procedure on glycerol is assessed in a commercial pilot-scale silicon carbide continuous flow reactor of 60 mL internal volume. Glycerol carbonate is obtained in 76% yield, corresponding to a productivity of 13.6 kg per day.

Hetero-Polysaccharides Secreted from Dunaliella salina Exhibit Immunomodulatory Activity Against Peripheral Blood Mononuclear Cells and RAW 264.7 Macrophages

Several species of microalgae have been known to produce exopolysaccharides (EPS) with potential immune activity. In the present investigation, ethyl acetate fraction of crude EPS secreted by Dunaliella salina was explored for immunomodulatory activity against peripheral blood mononuclear cells (PBMC) and RAW 264.7 macrophages. Effect of EPS on cell growth and cytokines production were measured using MTT (3-(4,5-dimethylthiazol-2-yl)-2,5-diphenyltetrazolium bromide) assay and ELISA respectively. Griess reagent was used for measuring the nitric oxide production in RAW 264.7 macrophages. FTIR analysis and mass spectroscopy were carried out for the characterization. Ethyl acetate fraction exhibited dose dependent increase in proliferative index and cytokines production (IFN-gamma, TNF-alpha, TGF-beta). At low concentration (250 and 500 mu g/mL), it showed growth inhibition and at higher concentration (1000 and 1500 mu g/mL), it enhanced the cell growth. Interestingly, the pronounced increased TNF-alpha production was observed in ethyl acetate fraction treated PBMC cells at higher concentration (750 and 1000 mu g/mL) indicating the immunostimulatory effect. In RAW cells, concentration dependent diminished cell growth (IC50 = 691 mu g/mL) and nitric oxide production (IC50 = 630 mu g/mL) was observed. FTIR analysis showed the presence of polysaccharides due to the detection of hydroxyl (-OH), Carbonyl (C-O) and alkyl (C-H) groups. Mass spectroscopy results revealed ethyl acetate fraction as penta-saccharide (m/z = 887.56 and 886.54) which are confirmed to be hetero-polysaccharides consisting of hexoses and pentoses along with association of ions. These results suggest that penta-saccharide (ethyl acetate fraction) isolated from D. salina may have the potential to be used for therapeutic purpose as immunomodulatory agent.
