The photochem. reaction of BrPh with nitrogen oxides in air gave p-nitrophenol, 2,4-dinitrophenol, p-bromophenol, m-bromonitrobenzene, 3-bromo-2-nitrophenol, 3-bromo-4-nitrophenol, 3-bromo-6-nitrophenol, 2-bromo-4-nitrophenol, and 2,6-dibromo-4-nitrophenol. p-Nitrophenol was the main product. Irradiation of BrPh in the absence of nitrogen oxides in air gave PhOH and p-bromophenol. Reactions of intermediates were explored in order to ascertain the reaction mechanism.
