The compound 1,2-ethanediylbis(triphenylphosphonium) ditribromide was quant. prepared and used for the bromination of anilines, e.g., N,N-dimethylaniline yielding 4-bromo-N,N-dimethylaniline and phenols, e.g., 2-chloro-6-nitrophenol yielding 4-bromo-2-chloro-6-nitrophenol in the presence of a mixed solvent system (DCM/MeOH 2:1) and also under solvent-free conditions.
