Title compounds were synthesized by selective modification of β-cyclodextrin (β-CD), as a novel class of anionic cylindrical surfactants. Their inclusion functions were studied in water by using fluorescent probes as the guests. Their binding ability for the neutral probe 1-phenylnaphthalene was more than 10-fold stronger than that of β-CD; it was independent of mol. aggregation of the surfactant monomer. Inclusion occurs at the inside of a hydrophobic cavity undergoing the strong influence of the electrostatic effect of anionic sulfate groups and the effect of the chain length of the alkylthio groups.
