Background: Breast cancer is one of the most malignant tumors in the reproductive system and has a poor prognosis. Finding drugs with high efficiency, low side-effects, and low cost has become a research hotspot. Methods: In the present study, we treated SK-BR-3 cells with different doses of honokiol. Crystal violet staining method was used to detect changes in the total number of living cells; 3-(4,5-dimethylthiazol-2-yl)-2,5-diphenyltetrazolium bromide assay was used to detect the effect of honokiol on SK-BR-3 cell proliferation. Cell migration ability change was determined by wound healing assay. Cell invasion ability change was determined by Transwell migration assay. Flow cytometry was used to detect the apoptotic rate of SK-BR-3 cells, and Western blot was used to detect the expression levels of proliferation-associated protein (PCNA); migration- and invasion-related protein matrix metalloproteinase-2 (MMP-2); vimentin; apoptosis-related proteins Bcl-xl, caspase 3, and cleaved caspase 3 (CC3); and beta-catenin and its downstream target molecule c-Myc. Results: Compared with the control group, different doses of honokiol have different degrees of inhibitory effects on cells, including proliferation and invasion and migration (P<0.01). After treatment with 50 or 60 mu mol.L-1 honokiol, the apoptotic rate of SK-BR-3 cells increased (both P<0.01); PCNA expression was significantly downregulated (P<0.01). Intracellular accumulation of apoptosis-related proteins Bcl-xl and caspase-3 decreased but C-C3 increased. We also found downregulation of MMP-2 expression, a protein related to invasion and migration (P<0.01), and a decrease in the expression levels of the Wnt/beta-catenin signaling pathway-related proteins beta-catenin and c-Myc (P<0.01). Conclusions: Honokiol can promote the apoptosis of SK-BR-3 cells and can inhibit the proliferation, migration, and invasion of human breast cancer SK-BR-3 cells. The underlying mechanism may be through inhibiting the activation of the Wnt signaling pathway. Co-Solubilization of the Binary Mixture of 1-Naphthol and 2-Naphthol in the Water Micellar Solution of Sodium Cholate and Cetyltrimethylammonium Bromide

The micellar co-solubilization of alpha- and beta-naphthol and their binary mixture with surfactants sodium cholate (SC) and cetyltrimethylammonium bromide (CTAB) is examined. The micellar solubilization of 2-naphthol (2NpOH) in SC is entropic, and it is an energetically more favored process than the micellar solubilization of 1-naphthol (1-NpOH). The capacity of the solubilization by CTAB for solubilizing 1- and 2-naphthol is about eight-times higher at 4CMC than at 2CMC (four- and two-times the critical micelle concentration, respectively), which can be explained by the change in the micelle structure with an increase in the total concentration of the CTAB surfactant. For the same CMC values of the examined surfactants, SC has a higher solubilization capacity for naphthols in comparison to the solubilization capacity of CTAB, which is explained by the existence of hydrogen bonds between the building units and solubilizates that are formed in the SC micelles. For each molar ratio of the micellar binary mixture of 1- and 2-NpOH and in both examined surfactants (except for SC solubilization with a = 0.1 and a = 0.9 at 4CMC), the interaction parameters for 1- and 2-NpOH are larger than zero, which means there is a mutual antagonistic effect of 1- and 2-naphthol on their micellar co-solubilization that is probably the consequence of the competition for the same spatial part of the hydrophobic domain of the examined micelles. The binary mixture of 1- and 2-NpOH in the micellar pseudophase possesses a higher Gibbs free energy content and is thermodynamically less stable than the monocomponent solubilizates in SC and CTAB micelles.

Design and thermo-economic comparisons of large scale solar absorption air conditioning cycles

Sustainable cooling absorption technologies, using renewable energy sources, and climate-friendly cooling liquids gain more and more attention. In this work, design and thermoeconomic analyses are presented to compare between two different collector types (parabolic trough and evacuated tube) by Water-Lithium Bromide absorption systems. Generally, the main component of the entire system is the absorption refrigeration chiller, the plant will then consist of three subsystems. The first subsystem is the solar system for thermal power conversion. The second subsystem is represented by the condenser and chiller absorber that need to be cooled, using a cooling tower. The third subsystem is represented by the cold circuit and the terminals of the useful cooling power produced. A case study for a sports arena with 700-800 kW total cooling load is also presented. Results reveal that parabolic trough collector combined with H2O-LiBr (PTC/H2O-LiBr) gives lower design aspects and minimum rates of hourly costs (5.2$/h), while ETC/H2O-LiBr configuration (5.6$/h). H2O LiBr thermo-economic product cost is (0.14$/GJ). The cycle coefficient of performance COP was in the range of 0.5-0.9.

Design of a red-emitter hybrid material for bioimaging: europium complexes grafted on silica particles

A bottom-up approach was used to design a high luminescent biomarker composed of nanoparticles of silica grafted with Eu3+ complex, and the labeling of CHO-k1 ovary cells and gastrocnemius muscle cells was successfully observed in imaging tests. Spheroidal silica nanoparticles were prepared via the solgel method and then decorated with Eu3+ complexes in a sequence of reactions to form the final hybrid nanoparticles. The material was characterized by scanning electron microscopy (120 +/- 19 nm), zeta potential (-15 mV), and photoluminescence (red emission with 32% quantum efficiency). The material exhibit high biocompatibility with CHO-k1 cells, as evidenced via the MTT (3-(4,5-dimethylthiazol-2-yl)-2,5-diphenyltetrazolium bromide) method. CHO-k1 cells cultivated in the presence of the hybrid were investigated by microscopy techniques, and an active mechanism of internalization via phagocytosis was evidenced. Fluorescence and confocal images indicated red emission distributed in the cytoplasm, and especially around the nuclei. While for the muscle cells also stained with the luminescent particles, a distribution near the membrane was observed. DESs containing amine groups showed superior absorption, and between the thiourea- and urea-containing DESs, the former exhibited the best performance, which was not related to its viscosity nor its initial solution pH but rather to the chemical interaction of functional groups in the DES promoting ionic interaction with generated sulphites. The effect of lithium bromide on the performance of ammonia-water absorption-resorption heat pump system

Ammonia absorption-resorption heat pump (ARHP) has lower operating pressure than the absorption heat pump, and it can also make full use of low-grade heat in the heating process. But the low coefficient of performance (COP) limits the applications of ammonia ARHP. Lithium bromide, as the third working medium, is added to the traditional ammonia-water working pair to improve the performance of the system. In this paper, COPs of NH3-H2O-LiBr ternary working fluid ARHP systems under different operating temperatures are studied by a simulation model established in Aspen Plus. The operating temperature parameters ranges of the ternary ARHP are compared with those of the binary ARHP. The simulation results indicate that the COP of the ternary system is greatly influenced by the concentration of lithium bromide, and it improves up to 21% at T-Gen = 100 degrees C, T-Des = T-Abs = T-Res = 40 degrees C, and P-H/P-L, = 1.5/0.48 MPa. Besides, when lithium bromide is added to the binary ARHP, the minimum values of (TGen) and T-Res are reduced to 87 degrees C and 3 degrees C, respectively. In contrast, the maximum values of T-Abs and T-Res are increased to 47.5 degrees C compared with the binary system. The NH3-H2O-LiBr ternary working fluid makes the low-grade heat reused by the ARHP more efficiently.

Removal of Phenol and Monochlorophenols Pollution from Aqueous Solutions with HDTMA-Modified Halloysite

Dynamic and equilibrium research on the adsorption of phenol and monochlorophenols (2-chlorophenol, 3-chlorophenol, 4-chlorophenol) on modified halloysite with the use of HDTMA (hexadecyltrimethylammonium) bromide was conducted at three temperatures: 293, 303, and 313 K. The interpretation of experimental data was based on the Temkin, the Dubinin-Radushkevich, the Freundlich, and the Langmuir equations to establish the appropriate adsorption models and to define the characteristic parameters describing the process. We determined that the Freundlich isotherm perfectly described experimental data as regards the adsorption equation concerning phenol; however, 2-chlorophenol, 3-chlorophenol, and 4-chlorophenol sorption took place in compliance with the Langmuir model. The adsorption of the studied compounds on the HDTMA-modified halloysite increased in the following order: phenol <4-chlorophenol <2-chlorophenol <3-chlorophenol. Thermodynamic parameters of the processes indicated the physical as well as exothermal adsorption character. The adsorption kinetics of phenol and monochlorophenols was discussed based on the following models: pseudo-first-order, pseudo-second-order, Elovich, intraparticle diffusion, and film-diffusion model. The rate of the sorption process was described with the pseudo-second-order model. The global electrophilicity indices of phenol and the monochlorophenols were applied to demonstrate the difference through the interaction of these adsorbates with a molecule of surfactant (HDTMA) and, as a result, the different properties of the studied compounds. Assessment of the potential of a reduced dose of dimethyl disulfide plus metham sodium on soilborne pests and cucumber growth

Methyl bromide (MB), a dominant ozone-depleting substance, is scheduled to be completely phased out for soil fumigation by December 30th 2018, in China. The combined effects of dimethyl disulfide (DMDS) plus metham sodium (MNa) were assessed in controlling soilborne pests for soil fumigation. A study was designed in laboratory for the evaluation of the efficacy of DMDS + MNa to control major soilborne pests. At the same time, two trials were conducted in cucumber field located in Tongzhou (in 2012) and Shunyi (in 2013), respectively, in order to assess the potential of DMDS + MNa in controlling soilborne pests. Laboratory studies disclosed positive synergistic effects of almost all four used combinations on Meloidogyne spp., Fusarium spp., Phytophthora spp., Abutilon theophrasti and Digitaria sanguinalis. Field trials found that DMDS + MNa (30 + 21 g a. i. m(-2)), both at a 50% reduced dose, effectively suppressed Meloidogyne spp. with a low root galling index (2.1% and 11.7%), significantly reduced the levels of Phytophthora and Fusarium spp. with a low root disease index (7.5% and 15.8%), gave very high cucumber yields (6.75 kg m(-2) and 10.03 kg m(-2)), and increased income for cucumber growers with the highest economic benefits (20.91 (sic) m(-2) and 23.58 (sic) m(-2)). The combination treatment provided similar results as MB standard dose treatment (40 g a. i. m-2) or DMDS standard dose treatment (60 g a. i. m(-2)) in pest control and yield, but was more effective than MNa standard dose treatment (42 g a. i. m(-2)). Usage of all chemical treatments gave better significant results than the untreated group of control. Considering the economic benefits, the DMDS plus MNa combination (30 + 21 g a. i. m(-2)) could be used for soil fumigation in cucumber production in China.
