In this study, we investigated variations in the thermal properties of tetragonal tetra-n-butyl ammonium bromide (TBAB)+tetra-n-butyl ammonium chloride (TBAC) mixed semiclathrate hydrates by ion chromatography and differential scanning calorimetry; these variations were assessed both in terms of their hydration numbers and the guest mole fraction rates of the hydrates. TBAB mole fraction rates in mixed hydrate crystals (y(TBAB)(h)) are lower than those in mixed aqueous solutions; therefore, as Cl- has a smaller size difference to a water molecule, it is more easily incorporated into the host frameworks of hydrates than Br-. The melting points of mixed hydrates were observed at 286-289K, and the maxima are around y(TBAB)(h)=0.1-0.3 in each hydration number. The increase in melting points largely depends on decreasing y(TBAB)(h) rather than increasing hydration numbers. It is suggested that the combinations of TBAB and TBAC optimize the crystal structures, and melting points of TBAB+TBAC mixed hydrates become anomalously higher than those of the pure TBAC hydrates. Dissociation enthalpies per mass increase from 193Jg(-1) to 215Jg(-1), primarily with decreasing y(TBAB)(h), whereas those per guest moles increase from 154kJmol(-1) to 188kJmol(-1), primarily with increasing hydration numbers rather than y(TBAB)(h).

Kinetic study of semiclathrate hydrates formed with CO2 in the presence of tetra-n-butyl ammonium bromide and tetra-n-butyl phosphonium bromide

The kinetics of semiclathrate hydrates formation with CO2 in the presence of tetra-n-butyl ammonium bromide (TBAB), tetra-n-butyl phosphonium bromide (TBPB), and TBAB + TBPB were investigated. The experiments were conducted at the stoichiometric concentration of TBAB hydrate (2.57 mol%) and three subcoolings (DT = 6 K, 9 K, and 12 K) with the initial pressure fixed at 2.8 MPa. It was found that adding TBPB into the TBAB solution can promote hydrate nucleation, and this promotion effect at a lower subcooling (DT = 6 K) was stronger compared to that at higher subcoolings (DT = 9 K and 12 K). The gas consumption obtained in TBAB, TBPB, and TBAB + TBPB solutions decreased with the increase of sub cooling, despite the increase of the rate of hydrate growth. At a given subcooling, gas consumption (CO2 uptake) in TBAB + TBPB solutions was greater than that in TBAB and TBPB solutions, indicating that hydrate formation kinetics and the CO2 storage capacity were improved in the TBAB + TBPB solution. The largest gas consumption was obtained at DT = 6 K in the TBAB + TBPB solution, which was 28.7% and 17.2% larger than those obtained in TBAB and TBPB solutions, respectively. Folate-Targeted mRNA Delivery Using Chitosan-Functionalized Selenium Nanoparticles: Potential in Cancer Immunotherapy

Systemic messenger RNA (mRNA) delivery, although still in its infancy, holds immense potential for application in cancer vaccination and immunotherapy. Its advantages over DNA transfection make it attractive in applications where transient expression is desired. However, this has proved challenging due to mRNA’s instability and susceptibility to degradation. Selenium is important for immune function and modulation, with selenium nanoparticles (SeNPs) finding a niche in biomedicine as drug delivery vehicles, owing to their biocompatibility, low toxicity, and biodegradability. In this investigation, we synthesized chitosan-coated SeNPs with a folic acid targeting moiety for Fluc mRNA delivery to cancer cells in vitro. Synthesized SeNPs were stable and well dispersed, and ranged from 59 to 102 nm in size. Nanoparticles bound and protected mRNA from RNase degradation, while exhibiting low cytotoxicity in the human embryonic kidney (HEK293), breast adenocarcinoma (MCF-7), and nasopharyngeal (KB) cells in culture. Moderate cytotoxicity evidenced in the colorectal carcinoma (Caco-2) and colon carcinoma (HT-29) cells was attributed to apoptosis induction by selenium, as confirmed by acridine orange/ethidium bromide staining. Selenium uptake studies corroborated the transfection results, where significant transgene expression was evident for the overexpressed folate receptor-positive KB cells when compared to the other cells with less or no folate receptors.

Two spotted spider mite, Tetranychus urticae, is a polyphagous pest to a variety of plants and they are hard to be controlled due to occurrence of resistance to acaricides. In this study, biochemical evaluation after ethyl formate (EF) and phosphine (PH3) fumigation towards T. urticae might help officials to control them in quarantine purposes. PH3 fumigation controlled eggs (LC50; 0.158 mg/L), nymphs (LC50; 0.030 mg/L), and adults (LC50; 0.059 mg/L) of T. urticae, and EF effectively affected nymphs (LC50; 2.826 mg/L) rather than eggs (LC50; 6.797 mg/L) and adults (LC50; 5.836 mg/L). In a longer exposure time of 20 h, PH3 fumigation was 94.2-fold more effective tool for control of T. urticae than EF fumigant. EF and PH3 inhibited cytochrome c oxidase (COX) activity differently in both nymphs and adults of T. urticae. It confirmed COX is one of target sites of these fumigants in T. urticae and COX is involved in the respiratory chain as complex IV. Molecular approaches showed that EF fumigation completely down-regulated the expression of cox11 gene at the concentration of LC10 value, while PH3 up-regulated several genes greater than twofold in T. urticae nymphs treated with the concentration of LC50 value. These increased genes by PH3 fumigation are ndufv1, atpB, para, and ace, responsible for the expression of NADH dehydrogenase [ubiquinone] flavoprotein 1, ATP synthase, and acetylcholinesterase in insects, respectively. Lipidomic analyses exhibited a significant difference between two fumigants-exposed groups and the control, especially an ion with 815.46 m/z was analyzed less than twofold in the fumigants-treated group. It was identified as PI(15:1/18:3) and it may be used as a biomarker to EF and PH3 toxicity. These findings may contribute to set an effective control strategy on T. urticae by methyl bromide alternatives such as EF and PH3 because they have shared target sites on the respiratory chain in the pest.

Paeonol Pretreatment Attenuates Anoxia-Reoxygenation Induced Injury in Cardiac Myocytes via a BRCA1 Dependent Pathway

Breast cancer type 1 sensitive protein (BRCA1) is a well- known tumor suppressor and its role in oxidative stress has been confirmed. The purpose of this study is to evaluate whether paeonol has a protective effect on myocardial hypoxia-reoxygenation (A/R) injury, and to explore H9C2 cells through a mechanism-dependent pathway mediated by BRCA1. H9C2 cells were pretreated with paeonol (10 mu M) for 18 h before hypoxia was induced to establish a cell model of myocardial ischemia/reperfusion (I/R) injury. Use commercial kits to detect antioxidant indicators, including relative oxygen content (ROS) levels, total antioxidant capacity (T-AOC), superoxide dismutase (SOD), lactate dehydrogenase (LDH) activity, and creatine kinase (CK-MB) and nuclear factor-kappaB (NF-kappa B) activity. The cell viability was analyzed by 3-(4,5-dimethylthiazol-2-yl)-2,5-diphenyltetrazolium bromide (MTT) reduction method. Real-time fluorescent quantitative PCR was used to detect BRCA1 mRNA and protein levels. The expression levels of BRCA1, NLRP3 and ACS were determined by Western blotting. In addition, the release of interleukin (IL)-1 beta (IL-1 beta), IL-6 and tumor necrosis factor-a (TNF-a) was also evaluated by an enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA) kit. The results showed that paeonol (10 mu M) can significantly improve the hypoxic A/R damage of H9C2 cells, and the BRCA1 expression of H9C2 cells pretreated with paeonol was significantly increased before A/R damage was induced. Our data proves that the down-regulation of BRCA1 participates in the decrease of cell viability and the decrease of CK-MB and LDH activities, and protects cells by inhibiting the production of ROS and the activation of Nod-like receptor protein 3 (NLRP3) inflammasomes and NF-.B. In conclusion, paeonol significantly improved the A/R damage of H9C2 cells induced by hypoxia through the BRCA1/ROS-regulated NLRP3 inflammasome/IL-1 beta and NF-kappa B/TNF-alpha/IL-6 pathways. It may be a potential drug against myocardial I/R injury.

Synthesis of hierarchical ZSM-5 aggregates by an alkali-treated seeds method with cetyltrimethylammonium bromide for the methanol to gasoline reaction

A series of hierarchical ZSM-5 aggregates with a relatively low SiO2/Al2O3 ratio (~ 50) were successfully synthesized using alkali-treated commercial ZSM-5 as seeds and cetyltrimethylammonium bromide (CTAB) as mesogenous template. The effect of the amounts of CTAB on the physicochemical and catalytic properties of the synthesized catalysts was characterized by XRD, FE-SEM, FE-TEM, N-2 physical adsorption, ICP-OES, NH3-TPD, Py-IR and TGA. Moreover, the possible formation mechanism of the hierarchical ZSM-5 aggregates was studied. The results indicated that the mesoporosity of the hierarchical ZSM-5 aggregates was greatly enhanced with the addition of CTAB. The primary crystal size of the ZSM-5 aggregates significantly decreased owing to the protective effect of CTAB, which inhibits the further crystal growth. The hierarchical ZSM-5 aggregates prepared with addition of a suitable amount of CTAB showed large specific surface areas and large external surface areas, abundant intercrystalline mesopores and appropriate concentration of acid sites, which resulted in excellent catalytic performance in the methanol to gasoline reaction. The stability of the catalyst was remarkably improved and the gasoline yield was given a rise of 10% compared with the catalyst prepared in the absence of CTAB.

Synthesis, Modification, and Characterization of CuO/ZnO/ZrO2 Mixed Metal Oxide Catalysts for CO2/H-2 Conversion

CuO/ZnO/ZrO2 catalyst systems were synthesized in different ways and comprehensively characterized in order to study synthesis-to-property relations. A series of catalyst samples was prepared by coprecipitation, one-pot synthesis, and wet impregnation. The coprecipitation of multicomponent precipitates is usually a preliminary stage for preparation of mixed oxide catalysts. Cetyltrimethylammonium bromide (CTAB) was used in the surfactant-supported coprecipitation to improve the structural or textural characteristics of the catalytic samples. In the one-pot synthesis, all necessary components are simultaneously converted by evaporation from solutions into solids. During the wet impregnation, zirconium hydroxide is loaded with metal salts. After thermal treatment, all samples formed pure metal oxide forms, which was confirmed by XRD. The specific surface area of the investigated samples and their porous texture were determined by nitrogen adsorption. The reducibility of metal oxides and the kind of CuO phase was characterized by temperature-programmed reduction (TPR), and the surface acid properties by temperature-programmed ammonia desorption (TPAD). The CuO/ZnO/ZrO2 sample with the highest amount of strong acid sites is characterized by the formation of large CuO particles combined with the worst reducibility so that potentially catalytic active Cu/CuO pairs can be formed. One catalyst system was further characterized by in situ diffuse reflection Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (DRIFTS) to identify surface intermediate species, which may occur during the conversion of CO2/H-2 to methanol.
