Synthesis, Structure, and Chemical Nuclease Activity of DNA with [Cu(dpq)(L-Met)Cl] center dot H2O

A new mononuclear copper complex [Cu(dpq)(L-Met)Cl] . H2O has been designed and synthesized using the phenanthroline derivative dipyridoquinoxaline (dpq). This complex has been characterized by element analysis and X-ray single crystal diffraction. The crystal structure of the complex belongs to a monoclinic system with space group C2/c. Binding of the complex to DNA has been investigated by absorption spectroscopy, fluorescence spectroscopy, and agarose gel electrophoresis. Spectrophotometric studies have showed that the mode of binding is intercalation with a binding constant K-b of 1.25 x 10(3) L mol(-1). Additionally, the complex could quench an ethidium bromide-DNA complex. The apparent binding constant value for the complex is 1.89 x 10 (5) L mol(-1), which is slightly lower than the classical binding constant of 10(7) L mol(-1). In addition, the quenching mechanism of the complex has been not static or dynamic. Agarose gel electrophoresis has shown that the complex cleaved circular pBR322 plasmid DNA to both nicked and linear forms; at higher concentrations and longer reaction times, the cutting results have been improved. Effective Dephenolation of Effluent from Petroleum Industry Using Ionic-Liquid-Induced Hybrid Adsorbent

In this study, naturally heated clay (NHC) was complexed with synthesized ionic liquid (1-ethyl-3-methyl imidazolium bromide solution (EMIB)) to form NHC/EMIB composite. The effectiveness of NHC/EMIB composite in comparison with naturally heated clay (NHC) as an eco-friendly adsorbent for dephenolation of petroleum effluent was investigated. The adsorbents were characterized using Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy and scanning electron microscopy. Batch mode experiments were conducted to ascertain the effect of process variables on adsorption. Removal efficiencies of 81.70% and 91.7% were obtained for NHC and NHC/EMIB composite, respectively, at 25 min, 308 K, pH 4.0 and 150 mu m. The linear and nonlinear isotherm data fitted best to the Langmuir model for both adsorbent, while the linear and nonlinear kinetic data fitted best to pseudo-second-order and pseudo-first-order models for both adsorbents. The estimated average thermodynamic parameters (Delta G(0) = -9.653 kJ/mol, Delta H-0 = -28.295 kJ/mol and Delta S-0 = -46.395 kJ/mol) revealed the feasibility, exothermic nature and spontaneity, respectively, of the studied adsorption system.

In nutrient broth solution (NBS), ATMB at 250 and 500 ppm reduced individual halo-bacteria, that is, Halomonas halodenitrificans, Halomonas eurihalina, Alkalibacillus haloalkaliphilus and Salimicrobium album, by averages of 0 center dot 64 and 1 center dot 90, 1 center dot 5 and 2 center dot 61, 0 center dot 90 and 2 center dot 27, 1 center dot 65 and 3 center dot 36 log CFU per ml respectively in 5 min. ATMB treatment in SBS at 500 ppm for 18 h resulted in a reduction of H. halodenitrificans, H. eurihalina, A. haloalkaliphilus and S. album by averages of 1 center dot 9, 1 center dot 25, 0 center dot 96 and 1 center dot 34 log CFU per ml respectively, when compared with the controls. Likewise, 5000 ppm ATMB reduced the cocktail population nearly to zero from that cultivated in SBS for 18 h.

Cytotoxic activity of methanolic fractions of different Marrubium spp. against melanoma cells is independent of antioxidant activity and total phenolic content

The Marrubium genus (horehound) has proved to be an abundant source of biologically active compounds, but there is little knowledge about its potential anticancer activity. Moreover, some Marrubium species have not been the subject of study in this regard. In this study, we performed comparative analysis of phenolic acid (PhA) content and total phenolic content in fractions obtained from methanolic extracts of Marrubium vulgare L. (common horehound), Marrubium cylleneum Boiss. & Heldr. and Marrubium friwaldskyanum Boiss herbs. We examined the cytotoxicity of these fractions against a human melanoma cancer cell line (A375) and normal human skin fibroblasts (BJ) using a 3-(4,5-dimethylthiazol-2-yl)-2,5-diphenyl-tetrazolium bromide test, cell cycle analysis and real-time monitoring of cell viability. We detected caffeic, p-coumaric, ferulic and gentisic acids among the PhAs. Although the extracts obtained demonstrated low total phenolic content and did not show significant antioxidative properties, the nonhydrolyzed PhA fraction exhibited cytotoxic activity against a human melanoma cancer cell line, without affecting normal fibroblasts. Both acidic and alkaline hydrolysis abolished this activity, indicating that the esterified forms of phenolic compounds caused the observed cytotoxic effects. Further investigation of these compounds may facilitate the development of novel drugs for cancer treatment.

A Scalable H2O-DMF-DMSO Solvent Synthesis of Highly Luminescent Inorganic Perovskite-Related Cesium Lead Bromides

All-inorganic cesium lead bromide perovskites have attracted a lot of attention because of their excellent optical properties that can potentially be applied in various optical devices. However, large-scale preparation of cesium lead bromide perovskites with outstanding optical performance is still hindered by the poor solubility of CsBr in polar aprotic solvents. In this work, a water/dimethylsulfoxide (DMSO)/dimethylformamide (DMF) system is demonstrated for the synthesis of inorganic cesium lead bromide perovskites, where the introduction of water can effectively address the dissolution issue of Cs+ ions. Large-scale synthesis of pure-phase emissive Cs4PbBr6 with a product yield of up to 73% is achieved and the photoluminescence quantum yield of resulting product reaches as high as 76%. The origin of the light emission is further revealed by the photoluminescence evolution of the colored Cs4PbBr6 single crystals. Furthermore, reversible phase transitions between Cs4PbBr6, CsPbBr3 and CsPb2Br5 are achieved by changing solely the water content, which paves the way for the recycle of the mother solution of Cs4PbBr6 without generation of additional hazardous waste. The three-solvent-based synthetic approaches enable an economical, robust, and large-scale production for all-inorganic cesium lead bromide perovskites.

Background: Cardiovascular disease (CVD) is one of the major cause of mortality in diabetic patients. Evidence suggests that hyperglycemia in diabetic patients contributes to increased risk of CVD. This study is to investigate the therapeutic effects of melatonin on glucose-treated human umbilical vein endothelial cells (HUVEC) and provide insights on the underlying mechanisms. Materials and methods: Cell viability was determined using 3-(4,5-dimethylthiazol-2-yl)-2,5-diphenyltetrazolium bromide (MTT) assay. Reactive oxygen species (ROS) and membrane potential was detected using 2′,7′-dichlorofluorescein diacetate and 5,5′,6,6′-tetrachloro-1,1′,3,3′–tetraethylbenzimidazolcarbocyanine iodide (JC-1) dye staining, respectively. While, cell apoptosis was determined by Annexin-V staining and protein expression was measured using Western blot. Results: Our results suggested that melatonin inhibited glucose-induced ROS elevation, mitochondria dysfunction and apoptosis on HUVEC. Melatonin inhibited glucose-induced HUVEC apoptosis via PI3K/Akt signaling pathway. Activation of Akt further activated BcL-2 pathway through upregulation of Mcl-1 expression and downregulation Bax expression in order to inhibit glucose-induced HUVEC apoptosis. Besides that, melatonin promoted down-regulation of oxLDL/LOX-1 in order to inhibit glucose-induced HUVEC apoptosis. Conclusions: In conclusion, our results suggested that melatonin exerted vasculoprotective effects against glucose-induced apoptosis in HUVEC through PI3K/Akt, Bcl-2 and oxLDL/LOX-1 signaling pathways.

Copper-NHC Based Ullmann Catalysis in Water for Selective N-Arylation of 3-Aminophenols

Studies of environmentally benign catalytic methods are of great value in modern chemical synthesis, especially the chemo-selective construction of chemical bonds under green conditions. This work elucidates such preferential synthesis of C-N bond over C-O bond via selective N-arylation of 3-aminophenols using 1,3-bis-[2-hydroxyphenyl] imidazolium chloride (IHPHCl) and copper iodide as catalyst (1 mol %) in aqueous medium. Presence of chelating group (-OH) on IHPHCl enhances N-selectivity. Overall this is a simple and green method for selective N-arylation of 3-aminophenols with good substrate scope and yields (60-88 %). GC-MS, HRMS and other spectroscopic techniques were utilised in detailing the kinetics and mechanistic aspects.

Neurogenic orthostatic hypotension (OH) is a disabling disorder caused by impairment of the normal autonomic compensatory mechanisms that maintain upright blood pressure.
