New Biodegradable Nonionic-Anionic Surfactants Based on Different Fatty Alcohols as Corrosion Inhibitors for Aluminum in Acidic Medium

Two series of eco-friendly nonionic anionic surfactants based on itaconic acid and 1, 6 hexane diol were synthesized. The chemical structures of the prepared surfactant were confirmed by FTIR and H-1 NMR spectroscopy. The prepared surfactants were evaluated to prevent the corrosion of aluminum in 1.0 M HCl solution by electrochemical and chemical methods. The data obtained showed that the prepared compounds have good inhibition efficiency (IE%) even at 10(-5) M concentrations and act as mixed-type inhibitors, they do not affect the mechanism of the electrode processes, as well as the IE% increase by increasing the concentrations of the inhibitors, immersion time, and hydrophilic chain length. The high inhibition efficiency is due to the adsorption of the inhibitors molecules on the metal surface and the formation of a protective film. The surface activities of these compounds were also investigated and were correlated to their inhibition efficiencies and chemical structure. Through studying biodegradability of the synthesized surfactants we find that they are readily biodegradable in the environment and thus they are considered as eco-friendly corrosion inhibitors. Finally, the effect of the addition of these compounds on the aluminum surface was identified by atomic force microscopy (AFM) technique.

Efficient and Stable Low-Bandgap Perovskite Solar Cells Enabled by a CsPbBr3-Cluster Assisted Bottom-up Crystallization Approach

Recently, low-bandgap formamidinium lead iodide FAPbI(3)-based perovskites are of particular interest for high-performance perovskite solar cells (PSCs) due to their broad spectral response and high photocurrent output. However, to inhibit the spontaneous alpha-to-delta phase transition, 15-17% (molar ratio) of bromide and cesium or methylammonium incorporated into the FAPbI(3) are indispensable to achieve efficient PSCs. In return, the high bromide content will increase bandgap and narrow the spectral response region. If simply reducing the bromide content, the corresponding PSCs exhibit inferior operational stability due to alpha-to-delta phase transition, interface degradation, and halide migration. Herein, we report a CsPbBr3-cluster assisted vertically bottom-up crystallization approach to fabricate low-bromide (1% similar to 6%), alpha-phase pure, and MA-free FAPbI(3)-based PSCs. The clusters, in the size of several nanometers, could act as nuclei to facilitate vertical growth of high quality alpha-FAPbI(3) perovskite crystals. Moreover, these clusters can show further intake by perovskite after thermal annealing, which improves the phase homogeneity of the as-prepared perovskite films. As a result, the corresponding mesoporous PSCs deliver a champion efficiency of 21.78% with photoresponse extended to 830 nm. Moreover, these devices show remarkably improved operational stability, retaining similar to 82% of the initial efficiency after 1,000 h of maximum power point tracking under 1 sun condition.

Physicochemical and spectral evaluation of the interactional behavior of nicotinic acid (vitamin B-3) with mixed [sodium deoxycholate (bile salt) plus cetyltrimethylammonium bromide] surfactants

Aggregation behavior of anionic bio-surfactant; sodium deoxycholate (SDC) and cationic surfactant; cetyltrimethylammonium bromide (CTAB) and their mixtures at different mole fractions, alpha(SDC) = (0.90026, 0.88416, and 0.69438) has been examined in water as well as in aqueous solutions of nicotinic acid at (298.15, 308.15, and 318.15) K by employing various techniques such as conductivity, density, sound velocity, UV-visible spectroscopy, and dynamic light scattering (DLS) studies. From the critical micelle concentration (CMC) and the degree of ionization (alpha) of micelle, thermodynamic parameters {standard Gibbs free energy (), enthalpy (), and entropy () of micellization} have been evaluated and analyzed for surfactants studied in water and in (1, 2, and 3) x 10(-4) mol kg(-1) nicotinic acid((aq)) solutions at (298.15, 308.15, and 318.15) K. The CMC values for both the pure and mixed (SDC + CTAB) surfactants were found to increase with increase in concentration of nicotinic acid. The partial specific volume (phi(v)), isentropic compressibility (kappa(s)), and partial specific isentropic compressibility (phi(kappa)) were estimated from density and speed of sound data. UV-vis absorption spectra of 1 x 10(-4) mol kg(-1) nicotinic acid((aq)) solutions were also recorded in presence of surfactants studied at alpha(SDC) = (0.90026, 0.88416, 0.69438) and T = 298.15 K. Hydrodynamic diameters (D-h) of micellar aggregates for both pure and mixed surfactants were analyzed through the DLS studies performed at 298.15 K. Exosomes Derived from Bovine Mammary Epithelial Cells Treated with Transforming Growth Factor-beta 1 Inhibit the Proliferation of Bovine Macrophages

Transforming growth factor (TGF)-beta 1 is a multifunctional cytokine that plays an important role in regulating immune cell proliferation. We speculate that high expression of TGF-beta 1 may affect the immunity of dairy cows. In this study, untreated exosomes (un-exo) derived from an untreated bovine mammary epithelial cell line (MAC-T) and TGF-beta 1-treated exosomes (t-exo) derived from TGF-beta 1-treated MAC-T cells were isolated by ultracentrifugation and identified by electron microscopy and Western blotting. Then, un-exo and t-exo were used to treat a bovine macrophage cell line (BOSMAC), and the proliferative ability of BOSMAC cells was detected by an 3-(4,5-dimethyl-2-thiazolyl)-2,5-diphenyl-2-H-tetrazolium bromide assay and flow cytometry. The expression and phosphorylation levels of p38 were analyzed by q-PCR and Western blotting. The results showed that both exosome types exhibited the basic characteristics of exosomes. In BOSMAC cells treated with t-exo, significant inhibition of cell proliferation was observed, and the cell cycle progression was inhibited, while no difference was found between the un-exo and control groups. Only treatment with t-exo increased the expression and phosphorylation of p38, and the addition of the p38 inhibitor SB203580 abrogated the inhibition of BOSMAC cell proliferation by t-exo. Our results demonstrated that t-exo inhibited the proliferation of bovine macrophages by stimulating p38 MAPK and might interfere with immunity in dairy cattle. This finding may provide a new strategy for improving immunity and preventing breast-related diseases in dairy cows.

Aucklandia lappa Causes Membrane Permeation of Candida albicans

Candida albicans is a major fungal pathogen in humans. In our previous study, we reported that an ethanol extract from Aucklandia lappa weakens C. albicans cell wall by inhibiting synthesis or assembly of both (1,3)-beta-D-glucan polymers and chitin. In the current study, we found that the extract is involved in permeabilization of C. albicans cell membranes. While uptake of ethidium bromide (EtBr) was 3.0% in control cells, it increased to 7.4% for 30 min in the presence of the A. lappa ethanol extract at its minimal inhibitory concentration (MIC), 0.78 mg/ml, compared to uptake by heat-killed cells. Besides, leakage of DNA and proteins was observed in A. lappa-treated C. albicans cells. The increased uptake of EtBr and leakage of cellular materials suggest that A. lappa ethanol extract induced functional changes in C. albicans cell membranes. Incorporation of diphenylhexatriene (DPH) into membranes in the A. lappa-treated C. albicans cells at its MIC decreased to 84.8%, after 60 min of incubation, compared with that of the controls, indicate that there was a change in membrane dynamics. Moreover, the anticandidal effect of theA. lappa ethanol extract was enhanced at a growth temperature of 40 degrees C compared to that at 35 degrees C. The above data suggest that the antifungal activity of the A. lappa ethanol extract against C. albicans is associated with synergistic action of membrane permeabilization due to changes in membrane dynamics and cell wall damage caused by reduced formation of (1,3)-beta-D-glucan and chitin.

Voltammetric determination of prifinium bromide in a pharmaceutical formulation

In this work, thiophene derivatives were synthesized in good yields via multicomponent reaction of isoquinoline, alkyl bromides, activated acetylenic compounds, isothiocyanates, and catalytic amounts of ZnO nanorods (NRs) at room temperature under solvent-free conditions. This procedure for the synthesis of thiophene derivatives is green, easy, and simple with excellent yield. In addition, DPPH radical scavenging and ferric reduction power experiment has been studied for the evaluation of the antioxidant activity of some prepared thiophenes, for example, 5b, 5d, 5e, and 5f. As outcome, the compound 5d exhibited a noteworthy radical trapping activity and excellent reducing ability than synthetic antioxidants such as butylated hydroxytoluene (BHT) and 2-tertbutylhydroquinone (TBHQ). Nano-sized formazan analogues: Synthesis, structure elucidation, antimicrobial activity and docking study for COVID-19

Three series of nanosized-formazan analogues were synthesized from the reaction of dithiazone with various types of alpha-haloketones (ester and acetyl substituted hydrazonoyl chlorides and phenacyl bromides) in sodium ethoxide solution. The structure and the crystal size of the new synthesized derivatives were assured based on the spectral analyses, XRD and SEM data. The antibacterial and antifungal activities were evaluated by agar diffusion technique. The results showed mild to moderate antibacterial activities and moderate to potent antifungal activities. Significant antifungal activities were observed for four derivatives 3a, 3d, 5a and 5g on the pathogenic fungal strains; Aspergillus flavus and Candida albicans with inhibition zone ranging from 16 to 20 mm. Molecular docking simulations of the synthesized compounds into leucyl-tRNA synthetase editing domain of Candida albicans suggested that most formazan analogues can fit deeply forming stable complexes in the active site. Furthermore, we utilized the docking approach to examine the potential of these compounds to inhibit SARS-CoV-2 3CLpro. The results were very promising verifying these formazan analogues as a hopeful antiviral agents.

Practical Development of a ZnBr2 Flow Battery with a Fluidized Bed Anode Zinc-Electrode

The penetration of renewable sources (solar and wind power) into the power system network has been increasing in the recent years. As a result of this, there have been serious concerns over reliable and satisfactory operation of the power systems. One of the solutions being proposed to improve the reliability and performance of these systems is to integrate energy storage devices into the power system network. This paper presents the performance of three different electrodes feeder materials (carbon, nickel and a titanium) coupled and investigated within a fabricated ZnBr2 cell system via numerical modelling, DDPM+DEM model in ANSYS Fluent to simulate an incorporated anode zinc-electrode and COMSOL Multiphysics for the electrochemical behavior of the cell. After introducing briefly other alternatives to store energy, ZnBr2 cell systems, and its mode of operation were then discussed, before focusing on the numerical modelling and simulation and the laboratory experiments. Several extensive electrochemical experiments were implemented on the cell to achieve fast deposition of zinc onto the electrode surface during charge and fast dissolution during discharge for high performance. The mechanical action of the fluidised design of electrode is intended to improve deposit morphology, obviate the risk of dendrite growth and provide high transport rates of reactant to and from the active electrode surface. In conclusion, this paper has analyzed electrochemical techniques like chronopotentiometry, cyclic voltammetry (CV), and electrochemical impedance spectroscopy that were used to understand the behavior of the zinc bromide cells at a particular flow rate of 166.7cm(3) min(-1) required to give good fluidization of the anode. Design, synthesis and biological evaluation of iridium(III) complexes as potential antitumor agents

Cisplatin and its analogs have been used for the treatment of various cancers, but their serious side effect has limited clinical application. Presently, scientists are developing other metal drugs as an alternative of cisplatin. In this paper, three new iridium(III) complexes [Ir(ppy)(2)(adppz)](PF6) (adppz = 7-aminodipyrido[3,2-alpha:2′,3′-c] phenazine; ppy = 2-phenylpyridine 1), [Ir(bzq)(2)(adppz)](PF6) (bzq = benzo[h]quinolone 2) and [Ir(piq)(2)(adppz)](PF6) (piq = 1-phenylisoquinoline 3) were synthesized and characterized. The complexes can effectively inhibit the cell colonies. The cytotoxicity in vitro of the complexes against A549, HepG2, SGC-7901, BEL-7402 and normal NIH3T3 cells was evaluated by 3-(4,5-dimethylthiazole)-2,5-diphenyltetraazolium bromide (MTT) methods. The intracellular reactive oxygen species (ROS) levels and Ca2+ concentrations were assayed. The mitochondrial membrane potential, a release of cytochrome c and the expression of B-cell lymphoma/leukemia-2 (Bcl-2) family protein have been investigated. The data reveal that the complexes 1-3 can effectively inhibit the cell proliferation in A549 cells with low IC50 value of 3.2 +/- 0.4 mu M, 4.8 +/- 0.5 and 1.2 +/- 0.2 mu M, respectively. The antitumor in vivo shows that complex 3 can inhibit tumor growth with an inhibitory rate of 76.34%. The studies on the mechanism indicate that these complexes cause apoptosis in A549 cell via a ROS-mediated lysosomal-mitochondrial dysfunction pathway. In addition, the interaction of the complexes with BSA was explored.
