Biocompatibility and Cytotoxicity Study of Polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS) and Palm Oil Fuel Ash (POFA) Sustainable Super-Hydrophobic Coating for Biomedical Applications

A sustainable super-hydrophobic coating composed of silica from palm oil fuel ash (POFA) and polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS) was synthesised using isopropanol as a solvent and coated on a glass substrate. FESEM and AFM analyses were conducted to study the surface morphology of the coating. The super-hydrophobicity of the material was validated through goniometry, which showed a water contact angle of 151 degrees. Cytotoxicity studies were conducted by assessing the cell viability and cell morphology of mouse fibroblast cell line (L929) and hamster lung fibroblast cell line (V79) via tetrazolium salt 3-(4-dimethylthiazol-2-yl)-2,5-diphenyltetrazolium bromide (MTT) assay and microscopic methods, respectively. The clonogenic assay was performed on cell line V79 and the cell proliferation assay was performed on cell line L929. Both results validate that the toxicity of PDMS: SS coatings is dependent on the concentration of the super-hydrophobic coating. The results also indicate that concentrations above 12.5 mg/mL invariably leads to cell toxicity. These results conclusively support the possible utilisation of the synthesised super-hydrophobic coating for biomedical applications.

Thermodynamic Performance Evaluation of a Solar Parabolic Dish Assisted Multigeneration System

The concentration ratio of the parabolic dish solar collector (PDSC) is considered to be one of the highest among the concentrated solar power technologies (CSPs); therefore, such system is capable of generating more heat rate. The present paper focuses on the integration of the PDSC with the combined cycle (gas cycle as the toping cycle and steam cycle as the bottoming cycle) along with the utilization of waste heat from the power cycle to drive the single effect lithium bromide/water absorption cycle. Molten salt is used as a heat transfer fluid in the solar collector. The engineering equation solver (EES) is employed for the mathematical modeling and simulation of the solar integrated system. The various operating parameters (beam radiation, inlet and ambient temperatures of heat transfer fluid, mass flow rate of heat transfer fluid, evaporator temperature, and generator temperature) are varied to analyze their influence on the performance parameters (power output, overall energetic and exergetic efficiencies, outlet temperature of the receiver, and as coefficient of performance (COP) and exergy efficiencies) of the integrated system. The results show that the overall energy and exergy efficiencies are observed to be 39.9% and 42.95% at ambient temperature of 27 degrees C and solar irradiance of 1000 W/m(2). The outlet temperature of the receiver is noticed to decrease from 1008 K to 528 K for an increase in the mass flow rate from 0.01 to 0.05 kg/s. The efficiency rate of the power plant is 38%, whereas COP of single effect absorption system is 0.84, and it will decrease from 0.87 to 0.79. However, the evaporator load is decreased to approximately 9.7% by increasing the generator temperature from 47 degrees C to 107 degrees C.

Circular RNAs (circRNAs) are a group of RNAs featured by a covalently closed continuous loop structure. This study aimed to uncover the function and mechanism of circ-ubiquitin specific peptidase 36 (USP36) in endothelial cells treated with oxidized low-density lipoprotein (ox-LDL). The levels of circ-USP36, microRNA-98-5p (miR-98-5p) and vascular cell adhesion molecule 1 (VCAM1) were examined by a quantitative real-time polymerase chain reaction (qRT-PCR). The viability, apoptosis and inflammation were detected by (4,5-Dimethylthiazol-2-yl)-2,5-diphenyltetrazolium bromide (MTT) assay, flow cytometry and enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA), respectively. Western blot assay was performed to detect the expression of apoptosis and proliferation-related markers and VCAM1 protein level. The targets of circ-USP36 and miR-98-5p were searched using starBase website, and dual-luciferase reporter assay and RNA immunoprecipitation (RIP) assay were applied to validate the above predictions. Ox-LDL exposure induced the upregulation of circ-USP36 in HUVEC cells. Circ-USP36 accelerated ox-LDL-induced apoptosis, inflammatory and viability inhibition of HUVEC cells. MiR-98-5p was a direct downstream gene of circ-USP36. Circ-USP36 promoted the injury of ox-LDL-induced HUVEC cells through targeting miR-98-5p. VCAM1 could bind to miR-98-5p, and the protective effects of miR-98-5p accumulation on ox-LDL-induced HUVEC cells were reversed by the transfection of VCAM1. VCAM1 was regulated by circ-USP36/miR-98-5p signaling in HUVEC cells. Ox-LDL promoted the apoptosis and inflammation but suppressed the viability of HUVEC cells through upregulating circ-USP36, thus elevating the expression of VCAM1 via miR-98-5p.

Solid-State EDLC Device Based on Magnesium Ion-Conducting Biopolymer Composite Membrane Electrolytes: Impedance, Circuit Modeling, Dielectric Properties and Electrochemical Characteristics

Pd-KIT-6: synthesis of a novel three-dimensional mesoporous catalyst and studies on its enhanced catalytic applications

Synthesis of a novel three-dimensional mesoporous Pd-KIT-6 is carried out by a room temperature sol-gel method. Irreversibility in Anion Exchange Between Cesium Lead Bromide and Iodide Nanocrystals Imaged by Single-Particle Fluorescence

Anion exchange is a powerful method to tune the emission wavelength of perovskite CsPbX3 (X = CI, Br, or I) nanocrystals across the visible spectrum. CsPbX3 nanocrystals can possess a number of crystal structures that depend on both their composition and size. Understanding the role these structural variations play during anion exchange is important for their future application in optoelectronic devices. In this work, we used fluorescence microscopy to monitor reaction trajectories of individual nanocrystals as they undergo anion exchange between CsPbBr3 and CsPbI3. By varying the concentration of substitutional ion used to induce anion exchange, we quantify differences in reaction times for exchange in opposite directions. CsPbI3 nanocrystals undergo more abrupt shifts in their emission characteristics as they transform to CsPbBr3, while CsPbBr3 nanocrystals exhibit a smoother transition during their transformation to CsPbI3. Simulations of anion exchange using Monte Carlo trajectories are consistent with a larger degree of structural reorganization when CsPbI3 nanocrystals undergo anion exchange. Together, these results reveal that there are structural differences between CsPbI3 nanocrystals synthesized by the hot-injection method and those produced by anion exchange. The narrower distribution of reaction times when CsPbI3 nanocrystals transform to CsPbBr3 may produce better compositional homogeneity when this reaction is scaled-up to incorporate these materials into optoelectronic devices.

Comparative Study of the Efficacy of Different Artemisia Cina Extracts and their Nanoparticulated Forms against A549 Lung Cancer Cell Line

The present study aimed to investigate the possible antiproliferative effects of the plant extracts of Artemisia cina on lung cancer, and whether the nanoencapsulation of the plant extracts in the form of nanoemulsion would potentiate their therapeutic efficacy. Soxhlet extraction of the freshly collected shade-dried plant using n-hexane and methanol was performed, and the two extracts were loaded within nanoemulsion using the water dilution method. The nanoemulsion was characterized for its particle size, zeta potential, polydispersity, physicochemical stability under refrigeration conditions, and was morphologically visualized using transmission electron microscopy. The antiproliferative activity of the extracts and their nanoforms was tested in A549 lung cancer cell lines using 3-(4,5-dimethylthiazol-2-yl)-2,5-diphenyltetrazolium bromide (MTT) assay. Results revealed the successful preparation of the plant extract-loaded nanoemulsions with suitable particle size from 15-16 nm, a homogenous dispersion with polydispersity index (PDI) ranging from 0.23-0.31, and neutral surface charge. The nanoemulsions displayed insignificant changes in their physicochemical properties after storage for 3 months, and their spherical morphology was confirmed using transmission electron microscopy. Both n-hexane and methanol extracts di splayed antiproliferative activity against A549 cells, with IC50 values of 35.96 +/- 1.7 and 41.6 +/- 2.8 mu g/ml, respectively. On the other hand, their respective nanoparticulated forms displayed superior antiproliferative activity, with IC50 values of 12.59 +/- 0.7 and 5.6 +/- 0.4 mu g/ml, respectively. Therefore, it can be concluded that nanoencapsulation of plant extracts would significantly potentiate their antiproliferative activity, which paves the way towards a more effective anticancer therapy.

Nitrite sensor based on room temperature ionic liquid functionalized alpha-zirconium phosphate modified glassy carbon electrode

A novel ionic liquid/alpha-ZrP (C16MIM/alpha-ZrP) lamellar nanocomposite was fabricated via the electrostatic self-assembly deposition technique by using exfoliated alpha-ZrP nanosheets and guest molecules (1-hexadecyl-3-methylimidazolium bromide) as building blocks under mild conditions. C16MIM/alpha-ZrP nanocomposite was characterized by various analytical techniques such as X-ray diffraction (XRD), transmission electron microscopy (TEM), scanning electron microscope (SEM), Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, and synchronous thermal analyzer. The net interlayer spacing of alpha-ZrP determined by XRD confirmed that the C16MIM cations formed a monolayer arrangement between the alpha-ZrP nanosheets. The morphology and microstructure of C16MIM/alpha-ZrP composite were observed using SEM and TEM. The C16MIM/alpha-ZrP modified glass carbon electrode exhibited excellent electrocatalytic activity toward the oxidation of nitrite in weak base media. The results obtained with differential pulse voltammetry demonstrated that the C16MIM/alpha-ZrP hybrid detected nitrite linearly in the concentration range from 7.3 mu M to 1.25 mM with the detection limit of 1.26 mu M (S/N = 3). Additionally, the prepared sensor showed outstanding reproducibility, high stability, and anti-interference capability.

Reversible Release and Fixation of Bromine in Vacancy-Ordered Bromide Perovskites

Bromine is an irreplaceable reagent for many important applications including necessary additive for flame retardants and rubber treatment. However, the toxicity, causticity, and vaporability of bromine make the safe usage and transportation of bromine challenging, which can be alleviated by the bromine prefixation. Herein, vacancy-ordered bromide perovskites such as Cs4Sb2Br12 and Cs2PdBr6 are selected out for the bromine fixation through density-functional theory calculations and experiments. The redox within the bromide perovskites is designed to provide the driving force for the reversible release and fixation of bromine. Heating and cooling the title bromide perovskites in a necked ampoule make the bromine visible and separable from the solid residue. The composition engineering (i.e., Cs4Sb2Br12 vs Rb4Sb2Br12, and Cs4Sb2Br12 vs Cs2PdBr6) can effectively tune the stability (against water and high temperature) and the bromine storage capacity (from 9.30% to 18.76%). In addition, this work can provide a one-step preparation method for the liquid bromine without further purification.

A novel oncolytic adenovirus inhibits hepatocellular carcinoma growth

Objective To evaluate the inhibitory role of a novel oncolytic adenovirus (OA), GP73-SphK1sR-Ad5, on the growth of hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC). Methods GP73-SphK1sR-Ad5 was constructed by integrating Golgi protein 73 (GP73) promoter and sphingosine kinase 1 (SphK1)-short hairpin RNA (shRNA) into adenovirus serotype 5 (Ad5), and transfecting into HCC Huh7 cells and normal human liver HL-7702 cells. The expression of SphK1 and adenovirus early region 1 (E1A) was detected by quantitative real-time PCR (qRT-PCR) and western blot, respectively. Cell viability was detected by methylthiazolyldiphenyl-tetrazolium bromide (MTT) assay, and apoptotic rate was determined by flow cytometry. An Huh7 xenograft model was established in mice injected intratumorally with GP73-SphK1sR-Ad5. Twenty days after injection, the tumor volume and weight, and the survival time of the mice were recorded. The histopathological changes in tumor tissues were observed by hematoxylin-eosin (HE) staining and transmission electron microscopy (TEM). Results Transfection of GP73-SphK1sR-Ad5 significantly upregulated E1A and downregulated SphK1 in Huh7 cells, but not in HL7702 cells. GP73-SphK1sR-Ad5 transfection significantly decreased the viability and increased the apoptotic rate of Huh7 cells, but had no effect on HL7702 cells. Intratumoral injection of GP73-SphK1sR-Ad5 into the Huh7 xenograft mouse model significantly decreased tumor volume and weight, and prolonged survival time. It also significantly decreased the tumor infiltration area and blood vessel density, and increased the percentages of cells with nucleus deformation and cells with condensed chromatin in tumor tissues. Conclusions GP73-SphK1sR-Ad5 serves as a novel OA and can inhibit HCC progression with high specificity and efficacy.
