Post-marketing Re-evaluation of Tongxiening Granules in Treatment of Diarrhea-Predominant Irritable Bowel Syndrome: A Multi-center, Randomized, Double-Blind, Double-Dummy and Positive Control Trial

Objective: To evaluate the efficacy and safety of Tongxiening Granules (TXNG) in the treatment of irritable bowel syndrome with predominant diarrhea (IBS-D). Methods: A randomized, double-blind, double-dummy, and positive parallel controlled clinical trial was conducted from October 2014 to March 2016. Totally 342 patients from 13 clinical centers were enrolled and randomly assigned (at the ratio of 1:1) to a treatment group (171 cases) and a control group (171 cases) by a random coding table. The patients in the treatment group were administered orally with TXNG (5 g per time) combined with pinaverium bromide Tablet simulator (50 mg per time), 3 times per day. The patients in the control group were given TXNG simulator (5 g per time) combined with pinaverium bromide Tablets (50 mg per time), 3 times per day. The treatment course lasted for 6 weeks. The improvement of Irritable Bowel Syndrome Symptom Severity Score (IBS-SSS) was used to evaluate the primary outcome. Secondary outcomes included adequate relief (AR) rate, Irritable Bowel Syndrome-Quality of Life Questionnaire (IBS-QOL), Hamilton Anxiety Scale (HAMA), Hamilton Depression Scale (HAMD), and the recurrence rate at follow-ups. Adsorption removal of Ni(II) and phenol from aqueous solution by modified attapulgite and its composite hydrogel

Attapulgite (ATP) and its organically modified products have been investigated for potential applications in environmental remediation. In this work, a variety of modifiers with different functional groups, including saturated sodium chloride solution (NaCl), cetyltrimethyl ammonium bromide (CTAB) and humic acid (HA), were used to treat attapulgite clay firstly, and then with the modified ATP as adsorbent and acrylamide (AAm) as monomer, polyacrylamide/modified attapulgite (PAAm/modified ATP) composite hydrogel which could adsorb heavy metal ions Ni(II) and organic pollutants phenol were synthesized. The structure of the raw ATP and modified ATP was specified with Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FT-IR), X-ray diffraction (XRD) and Transmission electron microscope (TEM). The experiments indicated that the modified ATP and composite hydrogel possessed good adsorption properties for Ni(II) ions and phenol. The adsorption capacity of PAAm/HA-ATP hydrogel for Ni(II) was as high as 64.3 mg/g, which was 194.9% of pure hydrogel. The adsorption isotherm of HA-modified ATP (HA-ATP) and adsorption kinetics of PAAm/HA-ATP composite hydrogel was particularly concerned. The adsorption isotherm equation fitted well on the Langmuir model and R-L values ranged from 0.04 to 0.12 with different temperatures, indicated that the HA-ATP was a suitable adsorbent for adsorption of Ni(II) ions from wastewater. The obtained kinetics data for Ni(II) ions adsorption onto the PAAm/HA-ATP were described well by the pseudo-second-order model (R-2 > 0.99). As for the adsorption of phenol, double-modification proved to be the most effective method, and its optimal adsorption capacity was obtained on PAAm/CTAB-HA-ATP hydrogel.

Solvothermal synthesis and modification of NaYF4:Yb/Er@NaLuF4:Yb for enhanced up-conversion luminescence for bioimaging

The 3-4,5-dimethylthiazol-2-yl-2,5-diphenyl tetrazolium bromide (MTT) method and cell-targeted labeling proved that oleic acid-capped UCNPs after oxidation (UCNPs-OAO) have a higher biocompatibility than polyetherimide-capped UCNPs (UCNPs-PEI). Formation of anisotropic gold nanoparticles on indium tin oxide substrates as a plasmonic sensing material

A simple technique of seed-mediated growth has been successfully performed to grow anisotropy gold nanoparticles on solid substrates. The growth of the gold nanoparticles has been carried out in the presence of a binary surfactant mixture of hexadecyltrimethylammonium bromide with two different molecular weights of a capping agent, namely polyvinylpyrrolidone: 40,000 and 55,000. In this study, the effect of process parameters, growth time and molecular weight of capping agent was investigated. The growth time shows a significant impact on the shape and size of nanoparticles. The shorter growth time produced small spherical to square-like shape particles, whereas bigger particles including nanorods, nanosquares and nanotriangles were formed with longer growth time. The shape controlling agent, polyvinylpyrrolidone, was used to synthesis gold nanoparticles. It was found that monodisperse gold nanoparticles with uniform shape and size are hardly obtained when polyvinylpyrrolidone 40,000 was used as capping agent. Polyvinylpyrrolidone 55,000 produced more uniform shape and size of gold nanoparticles. Thus, these process parameters were found affected to the size, shape, surface density and uniformity of gold nanoparticles. This sample was further applied as a sensing material in the detection of toxic fungicide, namely chlorothalonil. The sensitivity of the sensor system was determined by the changes in peak positions and intensities of the transverse and longitudinal surface plasmon resonance peaks on different medium, that is, air, deionized water and chlorothalonil solution. Gemini surfactant/polymer/silica stabilized oil-in-water nanoemulsions: Design and physicochemical characterization for enhanced oil recovery

The present study deals with the synthesis and characterization of oil-in-water nanoemulsion systems for application in enhanced oil recovery (EOR). Nanoemulsions stabilized by N,N’-bis((dimethyltetradecyl)-1,6-hexanediammonium bromide) gemini surfactant (14-6-14 GS), partially hydrolyzed poly-acrylamide (PHPA) polymer and/or silica (SiO2) nanoparticle were synthesized by ultrasonication technique. Nanoparticles strengthen the mechanical barrier (electrostatic repulsion + steric hindrance) at oil-aqueous interfaces, resulting in increased ionic strength and droplet stability. Dynamic light scattering (DLS) results confirmed the formation of nano-sized (< 500 nm) oil droplets within bulk emulsion phase. Kinetic stabilities of nanoemulsions were investigated by zeta potential and phase behavior analyses. Surface tension of surfactant-stabilized nanoemulsions increased with PHPA addition. However, silica particles improved adsorption ability of surfactant-polymer-nanoparticle (SPN) systems, causing decrease in surface tension. Rheological experiments were conducted as screening experiment at different temperatures to identify pseudoplastic character, and flow parameters were fitted using the Power law model. Detection of Trace-Level Nitroaromatic Explosives by 1-Pyreneiodide-Ligated Luminescent Gold Nanostructures and Their Forensic Applications

Careful analyses of transmission electron microscopy images revealed that the sizes of these Au-clusters or Au-nanorods remain unchanged without any noticeable aggregation in the medium. Owing to the formation of an excimer within the neighboring pyrenes mounted on the surface of core nanostructures (i.e., Au:PVP nanocluster and Au:CTAB nanorod), the resulting pyrenegrafted nanocomposites exhibit strong emission characteristics. The strong excimer emission is significantly quenched in the presence of electron-deficient chemical inputs, and this phenomenon can be used for analytical purposes. Using these luminescent Au-nanomaterials, we demonstrate a selective detection and sensing of trace-level nitroaromatic explosives (e.g., trinitrotoluene, trinitrophenol (TNP), dinitrotoluene, 4-nitrotoluene, etc.). It was observed that the Py-Au:PVP nanocluster is equally effective for explosive detection in both solution and solid phases with the limit of detection up to 10 nanomolar. A high Stern-Volmer constant of up to 3.88 X 10(6) M-1 was seen in the case of TNP in anhydrous methanol at 298 K. The deactivation pathway operating within the Py-Au:PVP nanocluster and the analytes is thought to be a result of a predominating static quenching process, where a nonfluorescent D-A supramolecular adduct is formed in the medium. Py-Au:PVP has also been successfully used to develop latent fingerprints from nonporous surfaces under an exposure of 365 nm UV light. Regenerated keratin-encapsulated gold nanorods for chemo-photothermal synergistic therapy

Gold nanorods (AuNRs) have been widely applied to photothermal therapy against cancer. However, the chemically synthesized AuNRs such as that via seed-mediate method usually demonstrated a high cytotoxicity due to the existence of cetyltrimethylammonium bromide (CTAB) coating. In this work, keratin, a family of cysteinerich structural fibrous proteins was used for the first time to encapsulate AuNRs by a simple mixing method. Compared with CTAB-AuNRs, the keratin-encapsulated AuNRs (AuNRs@Kr) showed an improved colloid stability and good biocompatibility including low cytotoxicity and hemolytic effect.
