Dodecyl tannin derivative linked with 1,2,3-triazole was prepared by the click reaction of dodecyl azide and alkynylated tannin. The structure of tannin derivative was identified by FT-IR spectrometer and elemental analyzer, and the surface activity, antioxidant activity and antimicrobial activity of tannin derivative were studied. The surface tension of tannin derivative was significantly reduced because of the introduction of long chain alkyl groups, and the lowest surface tension was 38.87 mN/m at 1.0 mg/mL. The tannin derivative had strong ability to scavenge 1,1-diphenyl-2-picrylhydrazyl radical, the scavenging rate could reach 89.08% at 0.25 mg/mL. The tannin derivative exhibited strong antibacterial activity against E. coli and S. aureus due to the increased fat-solubility of tannin derivative and the introduction of antibacterial triazole groups in mol. structure of tannin derivative, and the bacteriostatic ratios of tannin derivative against E. coli and S. aureus were 92.16% and 89.21% at 2.0 mg/mL, resp. The tannin derivative can be used as good candidates for antibacterial packaging or antioxidant supplements.

In the field of cancer therapy, photodynamic therapy (PDT) is an emerging treatment modality that utilized light, photosensitizers (PSs), and oxygen to generate reactive oxygen species (ROS) to destroy tumor sites selectively. Conventional PSs experience issues such as poor water solubility and low bioavailability. The widely developed PS delivery nanosystems can address these problems, but most of them usually depend on relatively complex components and time-consuming synthesis procedures. Therefore, PS delivery vehicles with more easily obtained components and simpler preparation methods need to be explored. In this study, amphiphilic and cationic single-isomer cyclodextrin (CD-IL) was designed, which could co-assemble with chlorin e6 (Ce6, a com. available PS) via multiple non-covalent interactions. The obtained nanovesicles (CD-CE) could not only overcome the inherent drawbacks of free Ce6, but also exhibit improved PDT efficacy in a series of cell-related experiments, including favorable stability, preferable cellular uptake, and enhanced phototoxicity. Thus, CD-CE prepared by the co-assembly of simple building blocks could be a facile option for PDT clin. applications.

Electrochem. experiments showed MMT based ILs exhibited surprising corrosion inhibition efficiencies. The ILs adsorption behavior obeys Langmuir isotherm. Friction tests demonstrated MMT based ILs performed excellent lubrication properties, compared to [BMIM][BF4]. Combining with anal. of SEM and XPS, it can be concluded that the prominent lubrication performance ascribed to the coexistence of adsorption layer and tribo-film. Therefore, versatile ILs designed in this paper have gathered two significant abilities for industrial applications, which are high corrosion inhibiting performance and excellent lubricating properties. This work is instructive for structure design of multifunctional ILs and will promote industrial application of MMT based ILs in the future.

Liquid crystals with color-tunable light emission are important for a variety of applications; however, achieving multicolor light-emitting liquid crystals whose emission colors can be fine-tuned remains challenging because the limited derivatization of mesogenic fluorophores disfavors the diversity of the emission. Here, we present a positional isomerism-mediated copolymerization strategy to obtain liquid-crystalline polymers with continuous luminescence color-tuning ability. The introduced α-/β-cyanostilbene positional isomers possess very similar mol. structures, thus reducing the risk of assembly heterogeneity and facilitating the formation of a homogeneous and consistent liquid crystal mesophase. Meanwhile, a significant electronic effect was caused for fluorophores with positional isomerization, allowing the efficient tuning of emission colors via copolymerization Especially with a gradual change in the composition of the copolymers, the emission color shift behaved in a continuous manner from blue to green. These cyanostilbene-based liquid-crystalline polymers also showed reversible photochromic fluorescence switching ability. This approach highlights the value of positional isomers to prepare color-tunable solid-state light-emitting materials, allowing control and fine-tuning of the emission property while maintaining the ordered assembly ability.

A green modification method for effectively enhancing toughness of PLA was established. Herein, alk. lignin (LG) was firstly alkylated with dodecane, and then grafted with lactide (LA). The alkylated lignin-lactide graft copolymer (GLG-g-LA) was obtained via ring-opening polymerization (ROP). GLG-g-LA copolymer can be utilized as a functional filler to toughen polylactic acid (PLA) packaging film. The 31P-NMR of alkylated lignin (GLG) demonstrated that the peak of phenolic hydroxyl groups disappeared completely, while the relative peak intensity of carboxyl hydroxyl groups decreased significantly. The grafting rate of GLG-g-LA copolymer was improved more than twice times compared with lignin-lactide graft copolymer (LG-g-LA). Then LG-g-LA and GLG-g-LA copolymer were mixed with PLA to prepare different PLA composite films via casting method, resp. Particularly, the elongation at break of PLA/GLG-g-LA2 composite film increased to 41.98%, which was more than 20 times higher than PLA. In general, PLA/GLG-g-LA composite film with toughness, excellent UV barrier, water resistance and controllable gas permeation could be used as high-performance and biodegradable materials in packaging field.

I [X = N] was assembled into nanotubes while I [X = O] was assembled into nanobelts resp., via a reprecipitation method. I [X = N] and I [X = O] show good potential application in organic devices such as solar cells, organic field-effect transistors (OFETs) and so on.

Benefit from ternary random electrochem. copolymerization, the pCo-2 copolymer displays excellent electrochromic-supercapacitor properties among the similar bifunctional materials, with fast response time, high optical contrast, good cycling stability and large area (volume) specific capacitance. The electrochromic supercapacitor device based on pCo-2//PEDOT can make an LCD run continuously. This work provides an available general approach to realizing black-to-transmissive electrochromism towards electrochromic-supercapacitor bifunctional applications.

One-step synthesis and micropatterning of different types of carbon nanomaterials, such as amorphous carbon or three-dimensional graphene which have versatile electrochem., thermal, and mech. properties, are advantageous for the fabrication of microelectronics, sensors, and wearable devices. Here, we report a direct laser writing method to simultaneously synthesize and pattern graphitic carbon from liquid organic precursors. We have tested a wide range of liquid organic precursors and identified the chem. characteristics that are beneficial for successful laser-induced solvothermal deposition. The laser-deposited carbon exhibits a paracryst.-to-polycrystalline structure and has elec. resistivities on the order of 10-3 to 10-4 Ω m which is tunable through variations in the laser power. Such properties of the laser-deposited carbon, coupled with the ability to direct-write custom patterns with microscale resolution, make these carbon materials exciting candidates for use in applications such as energy storage and sensing.
