Strain-activated light-induced halide segregation in mixed-halide perovskite solids

Light-induced halide segregation limits the bandgap tunability of mixed-halide perovskites for tandem photovoltaics. Here we report that light-induced halide segregation is strain-activated in MAPb(I1-xBrx)(3) with Br concentration below approximately 50%, while it is intrinsic for Br concentration over approximately 50%. Free-standing single crystals of CH3NH3Pb(I0.65Br0.35)(3) (35%Br) do not show halide segregation until uniaxial pressure is applied. Besides, 35%Br single crystals grown on lattice-mismatched substrates (e.g. single-crystal CaF2) show inhomogeneous segregation due to heterogenous strain distribution. Through scanning probe microscopy, the above findings are successfully translated to polycrystalline thin films. For 35%Br thin films, halide segregation selectively occurs at grain boundaries due to localized strain at the boundaries; yet for 65%Br films, halide segregation occurs in the whole layer. We close by demonstrating that only the strain-activated halide segregation (35%Br/45%Br thin films) could be suppressed if the strain is properly released via additives (e.g. KI) or ideal substrates (e.g. SiO2). Mixed-halide perovskites are of interest for photovoltaic devices, but light-induced halide segregation obstructs bandgap tuning and is not fully understood. The focus of this research is the stabilisation of paper with Verdigris, a green copper pigment. Due to its corrosive effects on paper, many important documents, paintings and maps are in danger. The effect of the treatments was evaluated using colour, tensile strength, degree of polymerization and pH measurements. The results indicate that acidic degradation does not play a major role during accelerated degradation of paper containing Verdigris with moderately acidic pH value and that oxidative decay could be the main culprit of the decay. The method described, which involves the use of antioxidant tetrabutylammonium bromide in combination with calcium carbonate based deacidification dispersion, was proved to have a superior effect against degradation of paper with Verdigris in comparison to the treatments which involve deacidification agents only. Nano calcium hydroxide based deacidification agents result in high pH values of the paper samples and therefore cannot be advised for use on paper documents.

Synthesis of penta-fold twinned Pd-Au-Pd segmental nanorods for in situ monitoring catalytic reaction

Multimetallic nanomaterials have many applications. The controlled synthesis of multimetallic nanomaterials is highly desired. We report a study on using penta-fold twinned (PFT) Au nanorods (NRs) as seeds to synthesize PFT Pd-Au-Pd segmental NRs. The results show that the different crystal structures of seeds, I- and cetyl-trimethylammonium bromide (CTAB) significantly affect the deposition of Pd on seeds surface. The PFT Pd-Au-Pd segmental NRs showed excellent surface-enhanced Raman scattering (SERS) performance and improved catalytic activity. Our research is of great significance for the synthesis of similar nanostructures, and we also shown that PFT Pd-Au-Pd segmental NRs might have potential applications in studying the process of organic reaction.

The formate electrooxidation on Pt/C and PtSnO2/C nanoparticles in alkaline media: The effect of morphology and SnO2 on the platinum catalytic activity

Pt/C and PtSnO2/C electrocatalysts with and without cubic preferential morphology were used for formate electrooxidation reaction (FER) in alkaline medium. Precision medicine applications for severe asthma

Asthma is a heterogeneous condition in which multiple pathological pathways manifest with similar symptoms. Severe asthma (SA) is challenging to manage and comprises a significant health and economic burden. Many studies have been conducted in an attempt to define different clinical phenotypes that translate into biological endotypes, with the goal of tailoring treatment based on precision medicine. This review summarizes the current evidence for the treatments of SA, and in particular, the biologic treatments that are currently available: omalizumab, mepolizumab, reslizumab, benralizumab and dupilumab. We found only limited high-quality direct evidence regarding treatment with anti-IgE (omalizumab) in SA patients. Data regarding anti-interleukin (IL)-5 (mepolizumab, reslizumab and benralizumab) showed beneficial effects in severe eosinophilic asthma (SEA) with different threshold levels of blood eosinophils used in clinical trials. Dupilumab, anti-IL-4/IL-13, was shown to be effective in SEA and is the only agent currently FDA-approved for the indication of oral corticosteroid dependent asthma, regardless of the blood eosinophil level. This review also summarizes the existing knowledge regarding the characteristics of the patient who may respond to the different therapies. As of today, more studies are needed to better understand the diverse mechanisms that underlie SA phenotypes. We have not yet adequately reached the goal of precision medicine. Additional studies are necessary in order to find novel surrogate markers that can predict the response to a specific biologic therapy, especially in patients who are oral corticosteroid dependent. In addition, efforts must be invested into research looking for new treatment options for patients with SA associated with non-type-2 inflammation. Statement of novelty: we review the current evidence regarding tailored treatment therapies in SA, with a particular focus on the knowledge regarding patient selection for specific biologic treatments.

The effect of combined miR-200c replacement and cisplatin on apoptosis induction and inhibition of gastric cancer cell line migration

One of the major obstacles in the treatment of cancer is resistance to standard chemotherapeutic drugs. According to the numerous reports, miR-200c is involved in many cancers, especially gastric cancer, and also miR-200c has been known as an effective factor in the elimination of chemotherapy resistance. The purpose of this study was to explore the potential function and mechanism of miR-200c and cisplatin in the inhibition of migration and induction of apoptosis in gastric cancer cells. In this study, first, miR-200c mimics and LNA-anti-miR-200c were transfected into KATOIII cells. Moreover, 3-(4,5-dimethylthiazol-2-yl)-2,5-diphenyltetrazolium bromide assay results revealed that increased miR-200c expression and cisplatin can more inhibited the proliferation of KATOIII cells. MiR-200c overexpression inhibited the movement of KATOIII cells in wound healing assay. Subsequently, miR-200c/cisplatin could suppress colony formation in KATOIII cells. To identify a potential miR-200c target, we investigated the effect of miR-200c modulation on RhoE, PTEN, VEGFR, and MMP9 expression levels. Increased miR-200c expression caused a reduction in VEGFR and MMP9 mRNA and protein, suggesting that VEGFR and MMP9 are targets of miR-200c. In addition, reverse-transcription polymerase chain reaction assays showed that RhoE is target gene of miR-200c and LNA-anti-miR-200c suppressed the expression of PTEN. Flow cytometry and 4 ‘,6-diamidino-2-phenylindole staining analysis indicated that miR-200c increased the cisplatin-induced apoptosis which may be associated with suppression of RhoE expression in KATOIII cells, also cell-cycle analysis showed the arrest of cell-cycle progression at the G2 phase. These data demonstrated that miR-200c functioned as a suppressor gene in KATOIII cells. Furthermore, the Food and Drug Administration (FDA)-approved MB photosensitizer could strongly adsorb onto the surface of CuFe NPs to facilitate the drug delivery into cells and improve the photodynamic therapy at 660 nm via significant generation of singlet oxygen species, leading to enhanced cancer cell-damaging efficacy. Energy storage system design for large-scale solar PV in Malaysia: technical and environmental assessments

The Paris agreement, signed in 2015, is a commitment by the nations to set targets to reduce greenhouse gases emissions. In line with that, Malaysia is committed to lower its greenhouse gases emissions by 45% by 2030. This target is supported by the massive projects of Large-Scale Solar PV, of which 1 GW will be operating by 2020. However, the peak generation of this huge capacity, which occurs at noon, will not meet the peak electricity demand which occurs in the morning and in the evening, and this issue, in such scale, has not been addressed yet. Besides the direct use of solar generated electricity, storing electricity at the peak generation time and delivering it at the desired time may be the best usage of such intermittent energy. This project aims to design the optimal large-scale storage system for the Malaysian scenario. A comprehensive power system is simulated through HOMER Pro, including various storage technologies in different locations, selected according to the planned Large-Scale Solar capacity, the solar irradiation and the electricity demand. The power system has been sized according to two approaches. In the first approach, the storage is sized to satisfy the night peak demand, which occurs between 8pm and 10pm. In the second approach, the daily average demand is determined, and the storage is sized to satisfy all the demand above this average. The proposed power system is feasible only in five locations under the first approach, and not feasible in all the locations under the second approach. Knockdown of SALL4 inhibits the proliferation, migration, and invasion of human lung cancer cells in vivo and in vitro

Background: This study aimed to investigate the SALL4 expression in lung cancer, determine if SALL4 regulates the biological functions of lung cancer cells at the cellular level, and clarify the possible mechanisms involved. Methods: Immunohistochemistry was used to detect the SALL4 expression messenger RNA (mRNA) in 62 cases of lung cancer tissue microarray. The correlation of SALL4 with the clinical pathological parameters and overall life cycle of patients and the impact of disease-free life cycle was analyzed. Reverse transcriptionpolymerase chain reaction (RT-PCR) and western blotting were used to detect the SALL4 expression in lung cancer cell lines and nude mouse models. 3-(4,5-dimethyl-2-thiazolyl)-2,5-diphenyl-2-H-tetrazolium bromide (MTT) assay, colony-forming assay, and flow cytometry were used to detect the effects of interference with SALL4 expression on lung cancer cell proliferation and transplant tumor models; the effect of interference with SALL4 expression on the growth of transplanted tumors in vivo was also examined. Results: SALL4 was highly expressed in lung cancer tissues and cell lines and was closely related to the patient’s TNM stage and lymph node metastasis. Compared to patients with a high SALL4 expression, those with a lower SALL4 expression had a longer overall and disease-free survival. The expression of SALL4 is an independent risk factor for the prognosis of lung cancer patients. Interference with SALL4 expression can significantly inhibit cell proliferation and clonal formation. Interfering with the expression of SALL4 can arrest the cells in the G0/G1 phase by inhibiting the expression of the cell cycle-related proteins, cyclin B, cyclin E, and cyclin D1. Furthermore, wound-healing and Transwell assays showed that interference with SALL4 expression could significantly inhibit the migration and invasion of lung cancer cells, while experiments in nude mice showed that interference with SALL4 expression could significantly inhibit the size and weight of transplanted tumors. Conclusions: SALL4 was highly expressed in lung cancer cell lines. Interference with the expression of SALL4 can effectively inhibit the proliferation, migration and invasion of lung cancer cells, promote cell cycle arrest, and play the function of tumor suppressor genes. SALL4 may be a new target for the diagnosis and treatment of lung cancer.

The application of complementary ion modes in probing the same steady-state reaction mixture enabled a far more complete picture of the detailed autoxidation process; the HO2 radical and the least-oxidized reaction products were retrieved with Br- ionization, whereas the highest-oxidized reaction products were detected in the NO3- mode, directly providing information on the first steps and on the ultimate endpoint of oxidation, respectively. While chemical ionization inlets with multiple reagent ion capabilities have been reported previously, an application in which the charging of the sample occurs at atmospheric pressure with practically no sample pretreatment, and with the potential to switch the reagent ion scheme within a second timescale, has not been introduced previously.
