Mohammad, Sk Arif;Dolui, Subrata;Kumar, Devendra;Mane, Shivshankar R.;Banerjee, Sanjib research published 《 Facile access to functional polyacrylates with dual stimuli response and tunable surface hydrophobicity》, the research content is summarized as follows. Magnetically separable and reusable Ni-Co alloy nanoparticles were employed to achieve ambient temperature reversible deactivation radical polymerization (RDRP) of Me acrylate (MA), for the first time, yielding well-defined PMA (at least up to 124 500 g mol-1) with a low dispersity (D ≤ 1.20). The controlled polymerization character of RDRP of MA was confirmed from the linear semilogarithmic plot exhibiting pseudo first order kinetics, a linear increase of the mol. weight of the polymer with monomer conversion maintaining low D and the synthesis of PMAs of varying mol. weights from 2200 to 124 500 g mol-1 with low D. In addition, linear PMA-Br was used as a macroinitiator for the synthesis of several well-defined PMA-b-poly(M) block copolymers (where “M” stands for (2-dimethylamino)ethyl methacrylate (DMAEMA), tert-Bu methacrylate (TBMA) and 2,2,3,3,4,4,5,5-octafluoropentyl acrylate (OFPA)), with acceptable Ds (≤ 1.24), demonstrating the high chain-end fidelity of the macroinitiator. The synthesized PMA-b-PDMAEMA demonstrated dual pH- and thermo-responsive properties. Upon hydrolysis, the synthesized PMA-b-PTBMA leads to the formation of unprecedented carboxylic acid-functionalized PMA derivatives PMA-b-POFPA copolymers with varying OFPA mol% in the copolymer led to polymers with tunable surface hydrophobicity, as revealed by the water contact angle measurements.

Moon, Junsoo;Huh, Yoon;Kim, Seonghwan;Choe, Youngson;Bang, Joona research published 《 Reactive Core-Shell Bottlebrush Copolymer as Highly Effective Additive for Epoxy Toughening》, the research content is summarized as follows. Herein, we designed a core-shell structured bottlebrush copolymer (BBP), which is composed of rubbery poly(Bu acrylate) (PBA) core and an epoxy miscible/reactive poly(glycidyl methacrylate) (PGMA) shell, as an epoxy toughening agent. The PGMA shell allows BBP to be uniformly dispersed within the epoxy matrix and to react with the epoxy groups, while the rubbery PBA block simultaneously induced nanocavitation effect, leading to improvement of mech. properties of the epoxy resin. The mech. properties were measured by the adhesion performance test, and the tensile and fracture test using universal testing machine. When BBP additives were added to the epoxy resin, a significant improvement in the adhesion strength (2-fold increase) and fracture toughness (2-fold increase in KIc and 5-fold increase in GIc) compared to the neat epoxy was observed In contrast, linear additives exhibited a decrease in adhesion strength and no improvement of fracture toughness over the neat epoxy. Such a difference in mech. performance was investigated by comparing the morphologies and fracture surfaces of the epoxy resins containing linear and BBP additives, confirming that the nanocavitation effect and void formation play a key role in strengthening the BBP-modified epoxy resins.

The use of p,α-dimethylstyrene, potentially obtainable from renewable sources, as a substitute for styrene in the synthesis of amphiphilic copolymers is reported in this work. A series of novel poly(p,α-dimethylstyrene-co-maleic anhydride) (SMA) copolymers was synthesized, characterized, and studied as potential polymeric surfactants. After hydrolysis, the copolymers solution properties were compared to the similar and very well-known styrene-maleic acid copolymers. Both series of copolymers were synthesized using reversible addition-fragmentation chain transfer-mediated polymerization (RAFT), and a sample of poly(p,α-dimethylstyrene-co-maleic anhydride) was synthesized via classical free radical polymerization The synthesized copolymers were studied from the point of view of their solution properties, with particular attention to the influence of the macromol. and chem. structure on the surface tension of their aqueous solutions Our results suggest that p,α-dimethylstyrene can be employed in copolymers with maleic anhydride, the resulting material being a valid alternative to SMA copolymers for various applications, such as emulsifiers and dispersants. Furthermore, the DMSMA series seems to be slightly more surface active than SMA.

Mao, Jiayi;Niu, Dechao;Huang, Gaoxu;Jin, Xiaopan;Wei, Chi;Cai, Jia;Li, Yongsheng;Shi, Jianlin research published 《 A Ni/Ni2P heterostructure in modified porous carbon separator for boosting polysulfide catalytic conversion》, the research content is summarized as follows. The intrinsic sluggish conversion kinetics and severe shuttle effect in lithium-sulfur (Li-S) batteries are responsible for their poor reversible capacity and cycling longevity, which have greatly hindered their practical applications. To address these drawbacks, herein, we design and construct a heterostructured Ni/Ni2P embedded in a mesoporous carbon nanosphere composite (Ni/Ni2P-MCN) for boosting polysulfide catalytic conversion in Li-S batteries. The Ni/Ni2P-MCN-modified separator could not only prevent the shuttle effect significantly through abundant chem. adsorptive sites, but also demonstrate superior catalytic reactivities for the conversion of polysulfides. More importantly, the conductive carbon matrix with an exposed mesoporous structure can serve as an effective phys. barrier to accommodate deposited insoluble Li2S. Consequently, the cells with the Ni/Ni2P-MCN-modified separator exhibit greatly boosted rate capability (431 mA h g-1 at 5 C) and cycling stability (a capacity decay of 0.031% per cycle after 1500 cycles). Even at an enhanced sulfur loading of 4.2 mg cm-2, a stable and superior areal capacity (about 3.5 mA h cm-2) has been demonstrated. We envision that the unique Ni/Ni2P heterostructure in the porous carbon matrix could offer great potential for high-performance and sustained energy storage devices.

Liu, Jiawei;Li, Lin;Xu, Zhongzheng;Chen, Jia;Zhao, Mingwei;Dai, Caili research published 《 CO2-responsive zwitterionic copolymer for effective emulsification and facile demulsification of crude heavy oil》, the research content is summarized as follows. Viscosity reduction by emulsification would greatly facilitate the exploitation and pipelining transportation of heavy oil, as well as oil sands/sludge washing. However, the final demulsification process to achieve separation of oil and water is tricky. Therefore, developing smart emulsifiers that can be switched on demand to achieve both effective emulsification and facile demulsification in subsequent oil/water separation process would be of great significance to the practical applications. In this paper, a zwitterionic copolymer emulsifier comprising acrylamide (AM), 2-(diethylamino)ethyl methacrylate (DEAEMA) and 3-[dimethyl-[2-(2-methylprop-2-enoyloxy)ethyl]azaniumyl]propane-1-sulfonate (SBMA) was prepared via reversible addition-fragmentation chain transfer (RAFT) polymerization for better control of the mol. weight, exhibiting good salt resistance and fast CO2-responsiveness. The prepared copolymer can efficiently emulsify heavy crude oil with a viscosity reduction rate up to 98.6% in highly mineralized water. While in the presence of CO2, the formed heavy oil/water emulsions can be rapidly broken to obtain oil-water two phases. Compared with traditional demulsification methods, the CO2-responsive strategy presented in this work can achieve a lower oil content in water (1.4%) after separation Furthermore, the copolymer can also be applied to effectively emulsify and clean oily sludge. The CO2-responsive zwitterionic copolymer emulsifier demonstrated great potential in various engineering applications including exploitation and pipelining transportation of heavy oil, and oil sands/sludge washing, facilitating reduction of water pollution and energy saving.

Liniger, Marc;Neuhaus, Christian M.;Altmann, Karl-Heinz research published 《 Ring-closing metathesis approaches towards the total synthesis of rhizoxins》, the research content is summarized as follows. Efforts are described towards the total synthesis of the bacterial macrolide rhizoxin F, which is a potent tubulin assembly and cancer cell growth inhibitor. A significant amount of work was expanded on the construction of the rhizoxin core macrocycle by ring-closing olefin metathesis (RCM) between C(9) and C(10), either directly or by using relay substrates, but in no case was ring-closure achieved. Macrocycle formation was possible by ring-closing alkyne metathesis (RCAM) at the C(9)/C(10) site. The requisite diyne was obtained from advanced intermediates that had been prepared as part of the synthesis of the RCM substrates. While the direct conversion of the triple bond formed in the ring-closing step into the C(9)-C(10) E double bond of the rhizoxin macrocycle proved to be elusive, the corresponding Z isomer was accessible with high selectivity by reductive decomplexation of the biscobalt hexacarbonyl complex of the triple bond with ethylpiperidinium hypophosphite. Radical-induced double bond isomerization, full elaboration of the C(15) side chain, and directed epoxidation of the C(11)-C(12) double bond completed the total synthesis of rhizoxin F.

Li, Ruoyu; An, Zesheng research published 《 Achieving Ultrahigh Molecular Weights with Diverse Architectures for Unconjugated Monomers through Oxygen-Tolerant Photoenzymatic RAFT Polymerization》, the research content is summarized as follows. Achieving well-defined polymers with ultrahigh mol. weight (UHMW) is an enduring pursuit in the field of reversible deactivation radical polymerization Synthetic protocols have been successfully developed to achieve UHMWs with low dispersities exclusively from conjugated monomers while no polymerization of unconjugated monomers has provided the same level of control. Herein, an oxygen-tolerant photoenzymic RAFT (reversible addition-fragmentation chain transfer) polymerization was exploited to tackle this challenge for unconjugated monomers at 10°, enabling facile synthesis of well-defined, linear and star polymers with near-quant. conversions, unprecedented UHMWs and low dispersities. The exquisite level of control over composition, MW and architecture, coupled with operational ease, mild conditions and environmental friendliness, broadens the monomer scope to include unconjugated monomers, and to achieve previously inaccessible low-dispersity UHMWs.
