Here, the performance of a CsPbBr3 nanoplate (NP) laser is measured to be maintained after exposure to 150 keV proton beam with fluence up to 1 x 10(15) p/cm(2), an extremely high level of collision that destroys CdS NPs with similar shapes and emission wavelengths. Lasing characteristics and carrier dynamics of the CsPbBr(3 )and CdS NPs have been studied and compared in detail before and after proton irradiation with different beam fluences. Concurrently, simulation results manifest that negligible atomic displacement damage is caused by proton bombardment in CsPbBr3, ensuring its high resistance to proton irradiation. The findings of the high radiation resistance of the CsPbBr3 NP lasers and the insights into the underlying mechanism are conceivably important, which might make recommendations for the development of perovskite coherent light sources for new space applications.

Oral corticosteroids for post-infectious cough in adults: study protocol for a double-blind randomized placebo-controlled trial in Swiss family practices (OSPIC trial)

BackgroundCough is a common reason for patients to visit general practices. So-called post-infectious cough is defined as lasting 3 to 8weeks after an upper respiratory tract infection. It can be disabling in daily activities, with substantial impact on physical and psychosocial health, leading to impaired quality of life and increased health care costs. Recommendations for the management of post-infectious cough in primary care are scarce and incoherent. A systematic review and meta-analysis of randomized clinical trials (RCT) assessing patient-relevant benefits and potential harms of available treatments identified six eligible RCTs assessing different treatment regimens (i.e. inhaled fluticasone propionate, inhaled budesonide, salbutamol plus ipratropium-bromide, montelukast, nociception-opioid-1-receptor agonist, codeine, gelatine). No RCT found clear patient-relevant benefits and most had an unclear or high risk of bias.Post-infectious cough is thought to be mediated by inflammatory processes that are also present in exacerbations of asthma or chronic obstructive pulmonary diseases for which there is strong evidence that oral corticosteroids provide patient-relevant benefit without relevant harm. We therefore plan to conduct the first RCT evaluating the effectiveness of oral corticosteroids for post-infectious cough.MethodsWe are conducting a triple-blinded randomized-controlled and multicentred superiority trial in primary health care practices in Switzerland. We will include 204 adult patients who consult their general practitioner (GP) for a cough lasting 3 to 8weeks following an upper respiratory tract infection. Participants will be randomly allocated to either the 5-day treatment with oral corticosteroids or placebo. The primary outcome is cough-related quality of life assessed by the Leicester Cough Questionnaire score 14days after randomization. Secondary outcomes include cough-related quality of life at several time points, overall cessation of cough and adverse events.DiscussionThis RCT will provide evidence on whether oral corticosteroids are beneficial and safe in patients with post-infectious cough. Results can have a substantial impact on the well-being and management of these patients in Switzerland and beyond. An evidence-based treatment for this condition may reduce re-consultations with GPs and spending for antitussive drugs, thus possibly having an impact on health care spending.Trial registrationClinicalTrials.gov NCT04232449. Synthesis and optimization of zinc oxide nanoparticles using Kalanchoe pinnata towards the evaluation of its anti-inflammatory activity

The green synthesis of Zinc oxide nanoparticles (ZnO NPs) using Kalanchoe pinnata leaf extract has been illustrated in detail. Size plays a very significant role in maintaining the pharmacokinetic behavior of nanoparticle and thus, the size of ZnO NPs was optimized statistically using response surface methodology (RSM) with the Central composite design. Nanoparticles were characterized using UV-Visible spectrophotometer (UV-Vis), X-ray diffraction (XRD), Scanning electron microscopy (SEM), Energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (EDAX), Selected area electron diffraction (SAED), Transmission electron microscopy (TEM), Zeta analysis and Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FT-IR) which demonstrated the synthesis of hexagonal, spherical, pure and stable ZnO NPs with average crystallite size of 24 nm. The biocompatibility of ZnO NPs was established using 3-(4, 5-Dimethylthiazol-2-yl)-2,5-Diphenyltetrazolium Bromide (MTT) assay on RAW 264.7 murine macrophage model. Anti-inflammatory potential of ZnO NPs was investigated on LPS induced murine macrophage RAW 264.7 cells. Gene expression of pro-inflammatory cytokines like Tumor necrosis factor (TNF-alpha), Interleukins (IL-1 beta, IL-6), and cyclooxygenase (COX-2) enzyme were checked using real-time polymerase chain reaction (RT-PCR). Enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA) was performed to determine the protein level of cytokines upon ZnO treatment and LPS induction. The nitric oxide levels were evaluated with the help of Griess reagent and also the anti-oxidant activity was accessed using 2,2-diphenyl-1-picrylhydrazyl (DPPH) free radical scavenging assay.

Ferrate(VI) pre-treatment and subsequent chlorination of blue-green algae: Quantification of disinfection byproducts

Algal organic matter (AOM) from seasonal algal blooms may be an important precursor of disinfection byproducts (DBPs) in drinking water. This paper presents the effect of ferrate(VI) treatment on two blue-green algae, Chlorella sp. and Pseudanabaena limnetica, in eutrophic water. The results demonstrated that Fe(VI) removed the algal cells by causing cell death, apoptosis, and lost integrity, and decreased AOM (in terms of total organic carbon) in water via oxidation and coagulation. Chlorination of the Fe(VI) pre-oxidized algal water samples generated halogenated DBPs (including trihalomethanes, haloacetic acids, haloketones, chloral hydrate, haloacetonitriles, and trichloronitromethane), but the concentrations of DBPs were lower than those formed in the chlorinated samples without pre-treatment by Fe(VI). Higher Fe(VI) dose, longer oxidation time, and alkaline pH were beneficial in controlling DBPs. In bromide-containing algal solutions, negligible amount of bromo-DBPs were generated in the Fe(VI) pre-oxidation, and halogenated DBPs were mainly formed in the subsequent chlorination.

Mixing behaviour of Pluronics with gemini surfactant/plasmid DNA condensates: effect of Pluronic composition

Nanoparticles prepared from plasmid DNA (pDNA) and N,N-bis(dimethylhexadecyl)-1,3-propanediammonium bromide (16-3-16) have been mixed with various Pluronic block copolymers and investigated as binary surfactant systems in water using the previously demonstrated critical aggregation concentration of the surfactant-DNA complex. Use of mixed micelle theories reveals that mixed micelle composition and the interaction parameter, beta, are influenced by the structure, in particular hydrophobicity, of the Pluronic component. The photochromic behaviour of two viologen salts modulated by the distances between the halide anions and the cationic N atoms of viologen

In recent years, viologens and their derivatives have received much attention due to their various potential applications, ranging from electro- or photochromic devices to clean energy. Generally, viologen compounds exhibit a colour change upon being subjected to an external stimulus. However, the chromic mechanism is still ambiguous, because there are many electron-transfer pathways for a chromic compound that need to be considered. Thus, exploring new chromic viologen-based compounds with one pathway should be important and meaningful. In this article, two new viologen-based derivatives, namely 1-(2cyanobenzyl)-4,4′-bipyridinium chloride (o-CBbpy-Cl), C18H14N3+ Cl (1), and 1-(2-cyanobenzyl)-4,40-bipyridinium bromide (o-CBbpy center dot Br), C18H14N3+ center dot Br-(2), have been synthesized and characterized. Interestingly, both isomorphic compounds possess only one electron-transfer pathway, in which 1-(2-cyanobenzyl)- 4,4′-bipyridinium cations (o-CBbpy) and halide anions are employed as electron donors and acceptors, respectively. Salts 1 and 2 consist of o-CBbpy cations involved in pi-pi interactions and hydrogen-bond interactions, and halide anions weakly hydrogen bonded to the viologen cations. The salts show different photoresponsive characteristics under identical conditions, which should be mainly related to the distances between the halide cations and the cationic N atoms of o-CBbpy but not the electronegativities of the halogen atoms. These results should not only help in understanding that the distance of the electron-transfer pathway plays an important role in viologen-based photochromism, but should also guide the design and synthesis of additional photochromic materials.

2D-3D heterostructure enables scalable coating of efficient low-bandgap Sn-Pb mixed perovskite solar cells

Low-bandgap photovoltaic absorbers based on mixed tin-lead (Sn-Pb) halide perovskites offer promising opportunities to fabricate efficient multi-junction solar cells. However, the current Sn-Pb mixed perovskite solar cells (PSCs) were mainly prepared using lab-scale spin-coating, greatly hindering their application for large-area device fabrication. Here, we report a simple and robust methodology for scalable deposition of dense and uniform Sn-Pb mixed perovskite films by one-step blade coating. High quality perovskite films with different Sn-Pb ratios are readily prepared by vacuuming the freshly coated precursor films followed by an anneal process. Solar cells based on these bladed Sn-Pb mixed perovskite absorbers showed decent photovoltaic behaviors. Further enhancement of device performance was realized via surface defects passivation using phenethy-lammonium bromide (PEABr). It was found that the formation of a thin layer of 2D Ruddlesden-Popper perovskite on top of 3D bulk perovskite significantly suppressed charge recombination. As a consequence, the open-circuit voltage (V-OC) of the solar cells (E-g = 1.35 eV) was dramatically lifted from 0.71 V to 0.78 V, yielding high efficiencies of over 15%. Moreover, notable improvement in shelf and moisture stability was observed due to the protection barrier of the 2D perovskite capping layer.

Involvement of mitochondrial biogenesis during the differentiation of human periosteum-derived mesenchymal stem cells into adipocytes, chondrocytes and osteocytes

Due to a rapidly expanding aging population, the incidence of age-related or degenerative diseases has increased, and efforts to handle the issue with regenerative medicine via adult stem cells have become more important. And it is now clear that the mitochondrial energy metabolism is important for stem cell differentiation. When stem cells commit to differentiate, glycolytic metabolism is being shifted to mitochondrial oxidative phosphorylation (OXPHOS) to meet an increased cellular energy demand required for differentiated cells. However, the nature of cellular metabolisms during the differentiation process of periosteum-derived mesenchymal stem cells (POMSC) is still unclear. In the present study, we investigated mitochondrial biogenesis during the adipogenic, chondrogenic, and osteogenic differentiation of POMSCs. Both mitochondrial DNA (mtDNA) contents and mitochondrial proteins (VDAC and mitochondrial OXPHOS complex subunits) were increased during all of these mesenchymal lineage differentiations of POMSCs. Interestingly, glycolytic metabolism is reduced as POMSCs undergo osteogenic differentiation. Furthermore, reducing mtDNA contents by ethidium bromide treatments prevents osteogenic differentiation of POMSCs. In conclusion, these results indicate that mitochondrial biogenesis and OXPHOS metabolism play important roles in the differentiation of POMCS and suggest that pharmaceutical modulation of mitochondrial biogenesis and/or function can be a novel regulation for POMSC differentiation and regenerative medicine.
