Development of adaptive neuro-fuzzy inference system model for predict trihalomethane formation potential in distribution network simulation test

Trihalomethanes (THMs), which is one of the major classes of DBP known to be highly cytotoxic and genotoxic, were formed and modeled under controlled conditions by laboratory-scale distribution network simulation test. The formation potentials of THM depending on the parameters such as natural organic matter, bromide, chlorine, pH, and contact time were determined. Subsequently, the Adaptive Neuro-Fuzzy Inference System (ANFIS) model was developed using these parameters as inputs and THM formation potentials as output, and the correlation coefficient was 0.9817. In the range of the inputs, the ANFIS model representing the simulation test results were compared with THM formations of an actual distribution network system in dry and wet seasons. As a result, the predictions of the ANFIS model were little affected by the unidentified factors that were not used in model training but are known to affect THM formations in real waters and gave more consistent results than the EPA model.

In-situ monitoring of oil emulsion fouling in ultrafiltration via electrical impedance spectroscopy (EIS): Influence of surfactant

Some inconsistencies were found in the literature on the effect of surfactant type on membrane fouling by surfactant-stabilized oil emulsions. For instance, a recent study showed that the fouling trends revealed by optical coherence tomography (OCT) were incongruent with the flux decline trends. This study was targeted at providing more mechanistic insights on the evolution of the distinct membrane layers (namely, diffusion polarization, membrane skin and membrane microporous substrate layers) via electrical impedance spectroscopy (EIS). The three surfactants investigated were cationic cetyltrimethylammonium bromide (CTAB), anionic sodium dodecyl sulphate (SDS) and non-ionic Tween 20, the oil was hexadecane, and the ultrafiltration membrane was polyethersulfone (PES). The Tween 20-stabilized oil emulsions exhibited a greater flux decline than that of SDS, which agreed well with the relative shifts of the Nyquist plots and increase in conductance with time. Interestingly, the CTAB-stabilized oil emulsions exhibited a unique flux decline trend, in which the flux decline was the least in the initial 0.5 h then the worst beyond 0.75 h. Despite the negligible flux decline initially, EIS results indicated significant shifts of the Nyquist plots and increase of the conductance with time, which was tied to the extensive adsorption of CTAB. As filtration progressed beyond 0.5 h, the conductance and capacitance of the membrane skin layer in the case of CTAB-stabilized oil emulsions became respectively higher and lower than that in the case of CTAB alone, signifying that the deposition of oil emulsions had become more dominant than that of surfactants. Therefore, this study provided clear evidence that the surfactant oppositely charged to the membrane (i.e., CTAB) adsorbed extensively initially to give negligible flux decline, which was not the case for the surfactants that were similarly negatively charged like the membrane. This only lasted for 0.5 h beyond which fouling became pronounced per dictated by DLVO interaction energy.

Binding of model polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons and carbamate-pesticides to DNA, BSA, micelles and liposomes

The binding to biosubstrates and micellar systems of pollutants as the polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbon (PAH) derivatives 1-aminopyrene (1-PyNH2) and 1-hydroxymethylpyrene (1-PyMeOH) and the carbamate-pesticides 1naphthyl-N-methylcarbamate (carbaryl, CA) and methyl benzimidazol-2-ylcarbamate (carbendazim, CBZ) was analysed through an integrated strategy combining spectroscopy and quantum chemistry. As biosubstrates, natural DNA and bovine serum albumin (BSA) were taken into account for a thermodynamic analysis of the binding features through spectrophotometric and spectrofluorometric techniques. In all cases, a strong DNA interaction is present and intercalation is supposed as the major binding mode. For the PAH derivatives, DNA binding is found to be favoured under high salt conditions and BSA static quenching and binding with 1:1 stoichiometry occurs. The molecular structure and optical properties of 1-PyNH2. CA and CBZ together with their intercalated adducts in DNA were studied also by means of quantum chemical approach. The (TD)DFT calculations on intercalated dye/DNA adducts quantitatively reproduce the experimentally observed spectroscopic changes, thus confirming the intercalation hypothesis. The theoretical approach also provides information on the adducts’ geometries and on the amount of charge transfer with DNA. Moreover, ultraffitration tests in the presence of anionic (SDS), cationic (DTAC) and neutral (Triton X) micellar aggregates and liposomes provided insights into lipophilicity and cellular membrane affinity. PAH derivatives show high retention coefficient in all cases, whereas in the case of carbamate-pesticides micellar retention might be significantly reduced and is very limited in the case of liposomes. Comparative Study of the Efficacy of Different Artemisia Cina Extracts and their Nanoparticulated Forms against A549 Lung Cancer Cell Line

The present study aimed to investigate the possible antiproliferative effects of the plant extracts of Artemisia cina on lung cancer, and whether the nanoencapsulation of the plant extracts in the form of nanoemulsion would potentiate their therapeutic efficacy. Soxhlet extraction of the freshly collected shade-dried plant using n-hexane and methanol was performed, and the two extracts were loaded within nanoemulsion using the water dilution method. The nanoemulsion was characterized for its particle size, zeta potential, polydispersity, physicochemical stability under refrigeration conditions, and was morphologically visualized using transmission electron microscopy. The antiproliferative activity of the extracts and their nanoforms was tested in A549 lung cancer cell lines using 3-(4,5-dimethylthiazol-2-yl)-2,5-diphenyltetrazolium bromide (MTT) assay. Results revealed the successful preparation of the plant extract-loaded nanoemulsions with suitable particle size from 15-16 nm, a homogenous dispersion with polydispersity index (PDI) ranging from 0.23-0.31, and neutral surface charge. The nanoemulsions displayed insignificant changes in their physicochemical properties after storage for 3 months, and their spherical morphology was confirmed using transmission electron microscopy. Both n-hexane and methanol extracts di splayed antiproliferative activity against A549 cells, with IC50 values of 35.96 +/- 1.7 and 41.6 +/- 2.8 mu g/ml, respectively. On the other hand, their respective nanoparticulated forms displayed superior antiproliferative activity, with IC50 values of 12.59 +/- 0.7 and 5.6 +/- 0.4 mu g/ml, respectively. Therefore, it can be concluded that nanoencapsulation of plant extracts would significantly potentiate their antiproliferative activity, which paves the way towards a more effective anticancer therapy.

Effect of molybdenum content on the morphology and electronic characteristics of Pd-MoOx nanomaterials and activity evaluation for ethylene glycol electro-oxidation

In this work, Pd-MoOx nanomaterials were developed changing the Mo/Pd precursor ratio and tested for ethylene glycol electro-oxidation reaction (EGOR) in alkaline medium. Mo atomic % compositions of 0, 15, 35, 45 and 75 at. % were evaluated. The increase of Mo at. % resulted in morphology changes due to the directing effect of hexadecyltrimethylammonium bromide (CTAB) on molybdenum passing from hemispheres to nanobelts + hemispheres (15 at. % Mo denoted as Pd85Mo15), then only nanobelts (35 at. % Mo, Pd65Mo35), and nanosheets (45 at. % Mo, Pd55Mo45), and hemispheres were newly obtained at the higher Mo concentration (75 at. % Mo, Pd25Mo75). The activity evaluation of EGOR at 60 degrees C indicated that Pd25Mo75 supported on Vulcan carbon (Pd25Mo75/C) displayed the highest current density (63.80 mA cm(-2)), and according with X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) the highest activity of Pd25Mo75/C can be related to the abundance of Mo5+ species, which have oxygen vacancies with a single positive charge. Additionally, the analysis of O 1s core-level corroborated the abundance of oxygen with high number of defects sites. Thereby, it was found that Pd loading can be decreased without comprising the activity by increasing oxygen vacancies of MoOx as co-catalyst.
