Effects of microbubble pre-ozonation time and pH on trihalomethanes and haloacetic acids formation in pilot-scale tropical peat water treatments for drinking water purposes

The high concentrations of dissolved organicmatter (DOM), chloride, and bromide in tropical peat water have a significant impact on the formation of carcinogenic disinfection by-products (DBPs) such as trihalomethanes (THMs) and haloacetic acids (HAAs), especially during the chlorination process. Therefore, other pretreatment methods to effectively remove these harmful substances in the water during treatment are needed. The aim of this study was to determine the effects of microbubble pre-ozonation pH on the reduction of THM4 and HAA5 formed during the peat water treatment process and to determine the best conditions for microbubble pre-ozonation to reduce the formation of these two classes of DBPs. The microbubble pre-ozonation was conducted at a pH of 5.5, 7, and 8.5. Furthermore, the primary treatments applied after this pretreatment were coagulation and activated carbon adsorption before post-chlorine disinfection. The coagulation process using aluminum sulfate and activated carbon adsorption succeeded in reducing the formation of THM4 after chlorination, to a level below USEPA standards, but the concentration of HAA5 was still high. However, the use of microbubble preozonation significantly reduced the formation of both classes of compounds during the chlorination process of the peatwater. Also, the concentration of THM4 increased during the pre-ozonation process in all pH conditions, but HAA5 decreased except in alkaline state. Furthermore, the ideal conditions for microbubble pre-ozonation on peat water were at pH 7 (neutral) after 30 min, with the total THM4 concentration at 33.73 +/- 0.40 mu g/L, and that of HAA5 at 49.89 +/- 0.09 mu g/L, falling below the USEPA standard. Triple-template system for phosphorus-modified AFX/CHA intergrowth zeolite

Phosphorus-modified zeolite with an intergrowth structure of AFX and CHA (P-AFX/CHA) was synthesized by a triple-template system. P-31 magic angle spinning (MAS) NMR confirmed the phosphorus modification via the decomposition of P-OSDA, whereas X-ray diffraction and transmission electron microscopy revealed the intergrowth structure. In addition, C-13 dipolar decoupling (DD) MAS NMR, elemental analysis, and other synthesis results suggested the selective modification of phosphorus into the CHA phase in the intergrowth zeolite. Phosphorus modification was effective in improving the thermal stability of P-AFX/CHA. The thermal stability increased with increasing the phosphorus modification degree.

PH-Sensitive, Polymer Functionalized, Nonporous Silica Nanoparticles for Quercetin Controlled Release

Some pH-sensitive, poly(2-(diethylamino)ethyl methacrylate) (PDEAEMA) grafted silica nanoparticles (SNPs) (SNPs-g-PDEAEMA) were designed and synthesized via surface initiated, metal-free, photoinduced atom transfer radical polymerization (ATRP). The structures of the polymers formed in solution were determined by H-1 NMR. The modified nanoparticles were characterized by FT-IR spectroscopy, XPS, GPC, TEM and TGA. The analytical results show that alpha-bromoisobutyryl bromide (BIBB) (ATRP initiator) had been successfully anchored onto SNPs’ surfaces, and was followed by surface-initiated, metal-free ATRP of 2-(diethylamino)ethyl methacrylate (DEAEMA). The resultant SNPs-g-PDEAEMA were uniform spherical nanoparticles with the particles size of about 22-25 nm, and the graft density of PDEAEMA on SNPs’ surfaces obtained by TGA was 19.98 mu mol/m(2). Owing to the covalent grafting of pH-sensitive PDEAEMA, SNPs-g-PDEAEMA can dispersed well in acidic aqueous solution, but poorly in neutral and alkaline aqueous solutions, which is conducive to being employed as drug carriers to construct a pH-sensitive controlled drug delivery system. In vitro cytotoxicity evaluation results showed that the cytotoxicity of SNPs-g-PDEAEMA to the L929 cells had completely disappeared on the 3rd day. The loading of quercetin on SNPs-g-PDEAEMA was performed using adsorption process from ethanol solutions, and the dialysis release rate increased sharply when the pH value of phosphate-buffered saline (PBS) decreased from 7.4 to 5.5. All these results indicated that the pH-responsive microcapsules could serve as potential anti-cancer drug carriers.

Preparation of water-soluble cellulose derivatives using TEMPO radical-mediate doxidation at extended reaction time

Four types of cellulosic samples, including cotton linters, microcrystalline, never-dried sulfite pulp, and viscose, were tested as potential sources to prepare cellulose-based derivatives, able to be used in homogeneous systems. Therefore, for each cellulose type (except viscose), we could isolate three oxidized samples All of these samples were thoroughly characterized using spectral analyses (FT-IR, H-1 NMR, C-13 NMR), content of negatively charged groups, and degree of polymerization. The morphology of the oxidized products has been evaluated by means of scanning electron microscopy (SEM), and crystallinity was assessed by using X-ray diffraction (XRD). The thermal analyses for the pure and oxidized cellulose samples were also performed. The limit of the solubility in water for the oxidized fractions was checked by using a low-voltage electron microscopy (LVEM).

The aim of the reported research is to evaluate the significance and potential role of the thiophene moiety in potential DNA and BSA targeting drugs. For this purpose a Thiophene-BenzoThiazole tandem molecule (TBT) and its mononuclear silver(I) complex [Ag(TBT)(2)](+) was synthesized. The research was carried out using spectroscopic techniques such as circular dichroism (CD), UV-Vis and fluorescence. Based on the presented results the intercalating type of binding to DNA by complex [Ag(TBT)(2)](+) and ligand TBT was observed. The binding is spontaneous in both cases and the Kb values of both compounds are similar (K-b = 6. 40 x 10(5) and K-b = 5.83 x 10(5) for ligand TBT and complex [Ag(TBT)(2)](+), respectively). Yet, this type of interaction was confirmed in ethidium bromide competitive binding experiments and a special emphasis should be put on the higher Ksv value for complex [Ag(TBT)(2)](+) (5.1 x 10(4)) than ligand TBT (3.4 x 10(4)), since it may be the result of the bisintercalation of the complex. It has found confirmation in the increase of the melting temperature (T-m) of DNA treated with complex [Ag(TBT)(2)](+) of similar to 5 degrees C, while in analogues experiment with ligand TBT T-m was only similar to 1 degrees C higher. The bisintercalation of the complex is possible since two TBT ligands are bound to the metallic center with planar thiophene moieties placed on the same site. Strain-activated light-induced halide segregation in mixed-halide perovskite solids

Light-induced halide segregation limits the bandgap tunability of mixed-halide perovskites for tandem photovoltaics. Here we report that light-induced halide segregation is strain-activated in MAPb(I1-xBrx)(3) with Br concentration below approximately 50%, while it is intrinsic for Br concentration over approximately 50%. Free-standing single crystals of CH3NH3Pb(I0.65Br0.35)(3) (35%Br) do not show halide segregation until uniaxial pressure is applied. Besides, 35%Br single crystals grown on lattice-mismatched substrates (e.g. single-crystal CaF2) show inhomogeneous segregation due to heterogenous strain distribution. Through scanning probe microscopy, the above findings are successfully translated to polycrystalline thin films. For 35%Br thin films, halide segregation selectively occurs at grain boundaries due to localized strain at the boundaries; yet for 65%Br films, halide segregation occurs in the whole layer. We close by demonstrating that only the strain-activated halide segregation (35%Br/45%Br thin films) could be suppressed if the strain is properly released via additives (e.g. KI) or ideal substrates (e.g. SiO2). Mixed-halide perovskites are of interest for photovoltaic devices, but light-induced halide segregation obstructs bandgap tuning and is not fully understood. Novel synthesis of platinum complexes and their intracellular delivery to tumor cells by means of magnetic nanoparticles

Platinum-based drugs are popular in clinics as chemotherapeutic agents to treat solid tumors. However, severe side effects such as nephro- and neurotoxicity impose strict dosage limitations that can lead to the development of drug resistance and tumor relapse. To overcome these issues Pt(iv) prodrugs and platinum delivery systems might represent the next generation of platinum-based drugs. In this study four novel Pt(ii) complexes (namely, PEG-Glu-Pt-EDA, PEG-Glu-Pt-DACH, PEG-Mal-Pt-EDA and PEG-Mal-Pt-DACH) were synthesized and a general strategy to covalently bind them to iron oxide nanoparticles was developed. The intracellular uptake and cell distribution studies of Pt-tethered magnetic nanoparticles on breast and ovarian cancer cell line models indicate that binding of the Pt complexes to the nanoparticles facilitates, for all the complexes, cellular internalization. Moreover, the magnetic nanoparticles (MNPs), as shown in a magnetofection experiment, enhance the uptake of MNP-Pt conjugates if a magnet is placed beneath the culture dish of tumor cells. As shown by a Pt release experiment, intranuclear platinum quantification and TEM analysis on cell sections, the presence of a pH-sensitive dicarboxylic group coordinating the Pt complex, triggers platinum dissociation from the NP surface. In addition, the triazole moiety facilitates endosomal swelling and the leakage of platinum from the endosomes with intranuclear localization of platinum release by the NPs. Finally, as assessed by MTT, caspase, calcein/ethidium bromide live/dead assays, among the four NP-Pt conjugates, the NP-Glu-Pt-EDA complex having a glutamate ring and ethylenediamine as a chelating amine group of the platinum showed higher cytotoxicity than the other three MNP-platinum conjugates.

MiR-4310 induced by SP1 targets PTEN to promote glioma progression

BackgroundmiRNAs have been reported to be involved in multiple biological processes of gliomas. Here, we aimed to analyze miR-4310 and its correlation genes involved in the progression of human glioma.MethodsmiR-4310 expression levels were examined in glioma and non-tumor brain (NB) tissues. The molecular mechanisms of miR-4310 expression and its effects on cell proliferation, migration, and invasion were explored using 3-[4,5-dimethylthiazol-2-yl]-2,5 diphenyl tetrazolium bromide, Transwell chamber, Boyden chamber, and western blot analyses, as well as its effect on tumorigenesis was explored in vivo in nude mice. The relationships between miR-4310, SP1, phosphatase, and tensin homolog (PTEN) were explored using chromatin immunoprecipitation, agarose gel electrophoresis, electrophoresis mobility shift, and dual-luciferase reporter gene assays.ResultsmiR-4310 expression was upregulated in glioma tissues compared to that in NB tissues. Overexpressed miR-4310 promoted glioma cell proliferation, migration, and invasion in vitro, as well as tumorigenesis in vivo. The inhibition of miR-4310 expression was sufficient to reverse these results. Mechanistic analyses revealed that miR-4310 promoted glioma progression through the PI3K/AKT pathway by targeting PTEN. Ferrate(VI) pre-treatment and subsequent chlorination of blue-green algae: Quantification of disinfection byproducts

Algal organic matter (AOM) from seasonal algal blooms may be an important precursor of disinfection byproducts (DBPs) in drinking water. This paper presents the effect of ferrate(VI) treatment on two blue-green algae, Chlorella sp. and Pseudanabaena limnetica, in eutrophic water. The results demonstrated that Fe(VI) removed the algal cells by causing cell death, apoptosis, and lost integrity, and decreased AOM (in terms of total organic carbon) in water via oxidation and coagulation. Chlorination of the Fe(VI) pre-oxidized algal water samples generated halogenated DBPs (including trihalomethanes, haloacetic acids, haloketones, chloral hydrate, haloacetonitriles, and trichloronitromethane), but the concentrations of DBPs were lower than those formed in the chlorinated samples without pre-treatment by Fe(VI). Higher Fe(VI) dose, longer oxidation time, and alkaline pH were beneficial in controlling DBPs. In bromide-containing algal solutions, negligible amount of bromo-DBPs were generated in the Fe(VI) pre-oxidation, and halogenated DBPs were mainly formed in the subsequent chlorination.

Use of nets treated with food grade coatings on controlling mold growth and mite infestation in dry-cured ham aging facilities

Dry-cured hams are frequently infested by mold and Tyrophagus putrescentiae in the aging facility during the 3 mo to 2-year aging period. Food grade coatings and these coating treated nets have been developed to control mold and mite growth on dry-cured hams to curtail the use of methyl bromide. Ham nets treated with food-grade coating of 1% propylene glycol alginate + 1% carrageenan + 40% propylene glycol were tested in a commercial research trial in 3 lots with approximately 100 hams in each lot, which also had approximately 100 control hams (untreated). Six of these hams were sent back to the research team. Three of these hams (already aged for 8 mo) were kept in a mite-infested simulated aging room for further evaluation of mold occurrence and mite population growth for another 6 mo. The other 3 hams from each lot of each treatment were tested by gas chromatography for propylene glycol residual. Mold evaluation indicated that the treatment hams reduced mold occurrence compared to the control hams, and there were no mite activities in any of these hams per inspection. In the mite-infested aging room, these coating-treated nets reduced mold and mite growth on whole hams (8-14-month-old). There was no difference in propylene glycol concentration between the control (0.072%) and net treated samples (0.053%). This concentration is 4 times less than 2%, the maximum acceptable concentration of this GRAS compound based on CFR 21,184.1666. Therefore, these hams met the legal requirements for commerce and were safe for human consumption and can be used to mitigate and help control mite infestations and mold growth of hams that are aged longer than 5 months.
