Using empirical dynamic modeling to assess relationships between atmospheric trace gases and eukaryotic phytoplankton populations in coastal Southern California

Many different atmospheric trace gases have been directly and indirectly linked to biological sources and sinks. Here we assess how atmospheric mixing ratios of a range of halocarbons (CH3Br, CH2Br2, CHBr3, CH3Cl, CHCl3, and CH3I) and COS are causally connected to naturally occurring marine eukaryotic phytoplankton in coastal Southern California. We use a self-organizing map to characterize the abiotic environment and empirical dynamic modeling with convergent cross mapping to identify causal interactions between multiple in situ 8-year time-series, sampled at the Ellen Browning Scripps Pier at Scripps Institution of Oceanography. Our work supports previous findings that halocarbon production is found in a variety of marine phytoplankton taxa and suggests that local phytoplankton may have the ability to affect changes in the mixing ratios of halocarbons in nearshore environments. There were notable links between changes in CH3I and several different diatom taxa and between changes in CHCl3 and a group of phytoplankton during specific ecosystem states. Our results suggest that both seasonal and non-seasonal shifts in eukaryotic phytoplankton structure contribute to small fluctuations in atmospheric halocarbon mixing ratios that exhibit strong seasonality and may occasionally play a larger role in atmospheric mixing ratios of halocarbons that display reduced seasonality.

Study on the clinical mechanism of Tong-Xie-An-Chang Decoction in the treatment of diarrheal irritable bowel syndrome based on single-cell sequencing technology

Background: Diarrhea-predominant irritable bowel syndrome (IBS-D) is a kind of functional gastrointestinal disorder with obscure pathogenesis, and exploration about differential gene expression and cell heterogeneity of T lymphocytes in peripheral blood in IBS-D patients still remains unknown. Clinicians tend to use symptomatic treatment, but the efficacy is unstable and symptoms are prone to relapse. Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) is used frequently in IBS-D with stable and lower adverse effects. Tong-Xie-An-Chang Decoction (TXACD) has been proven to be effective in the treatment of IBS-D. However, the underlying therapeutic mechanism remains unclear. This trial aims to evaluate the clinical efficacy and safety of TXACD in IBS-D and elucidate the gene-level mechanism of IBS-D and therapeutic targets of TXACD based on single-cell sequencing technology. Methods/design: This is a randomized controlled, double-blind, double-simulation clinical trial in which 72 eligible participants with IBS-D and TCM syndrome of liver depression and spleen deficiency will be randomly allocated in the ratio of 1:1 to two groups: the experimental group and the control group. The experimental group receives Tong-Xie-An-Chang Decoction (TXACD) and Pinaverium bromide tablets placebo; the control group receives pinaverium bromide tablets and TXACD placebo. Each group will be treated for 4 weeks. The primary outcome: the rate of IBS-Symptom Severity Score (IBS-SSS). The secondary outcomes: TCM syndrome score, adequate relief and IBS-Quality of Life Questionnaire (IBS-QOL). Mechanistic outcome is the single-cell sequencing profiling of the T lymphocytes in peripheral blood from IBS-D participants before and after the treatment and healthy individuals. Spontaneous epoxidation of styrene catalyzed by flower-like NiO nanoparticles under ambient conditions

Flower-like NiO microspheres with an average size of 3 mu mand nanoflakes size 10-100 nm were synthesized by surfactant-assisted chemical precipitation method, using Ni(CH3CO2)(2)center dot 4H(2)O as a nickel source, diethanolamine as a complexing agent, and cetyltrimethylammonium bromide as a surfactant. The obtained results revealed an immediate conversion of styrene to styrene oxide, with high conversion (87%), medium selectivity (65%), and high turnover-frequency (TOF) (243 s(-1)). However, when bulk NiO was applied only 62% conversion with 68% selectivity and TOF = 174 s(-1) were obtained. Furthermore, this catalyst is was easily separable and recyclable. Innovative composite sorbent for thermal energy storage based on a SrBr2 center dot 6H(2)O filled silicone composite foam

This paper reports about the first experimental activity on a composite material for thermal energy storage, based on a SrBr2 center dot 6H(2)O filled silicone foam. The morphological and thermal features of the composite with different salt content (i.e. between 40 wt.% and 70 wt.%) were investigated. The dehydration behavior was studied by thermo-gravimetric analysis. Furthermore, scanning electron and 3D optical microscopy were used to compare the cellular microstructure of the composite foams. The synthesized foams are characterized by a well-interconnected cellular structure with a three-dimensional porous network. This, together with the high permeability to water vapor of the matrix favors water vapor diffusion and allows the reaction of all the salt embedded in the matrix. The main advantages of the composite material were analyzed and compared to other composites in literature. Since the production process, especially for higher salt content, seemed not sufficiently effective, causing a reduced foaming ration and lower ability to incorporate the salt hydrate, possible improvements were proposed and discussed.

The mechanism behind the cytotoxic property of P. senacia extract for MDA-MB-231 was also examined using different methods including 3-(4,5-dimethylthiazol-2-yl)-2,5-diphenyltetrazolium bromide (MTT) cell viability test checking apoptosis-associated genes, and wound healing assays. Twenty-six compounds were identified, of which caffeoylquinic acid derivatives, ferulic acid derivative, cinnamoylquinic acid derivative and two other polyphenols (oleuropeine and isoramnetin glucoside) being abundant, have been tested using in silico studies, against alpha-glucosidase and tyrosinase. Metal-Loaded Carbonated Mesoporous Calcium Silicates: Synthesis, Characterization, and Application for Diclofenac Removal from Water

In this study, we developed a simple synthesis method of carbonated mesoporous calcium silicate (MCS) materials loaded with iron (Fe-MCS), cerium (Ce-MCS), and iron and cerium (FeCe-MCS) using cetyltrimethylammonium bromide as a template. Such materials were characterized by different advanced techniques-X-ray diffraction analysis, nitrogen physisorption measurement, transmission electron microscopy, scanning electron microscopy with energy-dispersive spectroscopy, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, and Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy. They were examined by adsorption isotherms and wet oxidation to explore their maximum adsorption capacity and catalytic activity toward diclofenac (DCF) in solution, respectively. Results indicated that the advantageous properties of metal-loaded MCS samples were relatively similar to pristine MCS, suggesting that the basic properties of carbonated MCS were properly maintained after the loading process. Their specific surface area and total pore volume ranged 468-634 m(2)/g and 0.761.15 cm(3)/g, respectively. The Langmuir maximum adsorption capacity of DCF by the prepared adsorbents followed the increasing order: MCS (11.8 mg/g) < Fe-MCS (13.8 mg/g) < Ce-MCS (14.7 mg/g) < FeCe-MCS (23.7 mg/g). The adsorption mechanism mainly involved pore filling, hydrogen bonding, and pi-pi interaction. The Fe-MCS catalyst exhibited higher DCF degradation efficiency and rate constant under wet oxidation than the other prepared catalysts. Influence of surfactant and molarity on the properties of bacterial cellulose/polyaniline: Experimental and density functional theory

In this work, the structure-property relationship was evaluated in the synthesis of bacterial cellulose (BC)/polyaniline (PANI) nanocomposite aerogels in terms of both experimental and density functional theory (DFT) simulation. The molarity of HC1 solution (0.01 and 0.5 M) and the presence/absence of cetyltrimethylammonium bromide (CTAB) were the main parameters of synthesis conditions. DFT simulation showed that the formation of hydrogen bonds governed interaction between BC and PANI, and PANI had more tendency to BC than that of CTAB at 0.5 M. It was confirmed by the formation of shorter hydrogen bonds between BC and pmtonated PANI at 0.5 M. Regarding this fact, prepared samples at 0.5 M of HCl solution and the presence of CTAB experienced higher storage modulus and electrical conductivity by 2000 Pa and 4 order of magnitude than those of lower molarity (0.01 M). These findings were in accordance with simulation outcomes.

Preventing hydrates cohesion with a bio-inspired vitamin E derivative

A solidified natural gas (SNG) technology was investigated to transport natural gas in a hydrate slurry. A Vitamin E derivative (D-alpha tocopherol succinate, Vitamin E-TS), which is naturally derived and readily available, was used to disperse water in the decane phase under the turbulent mixing condition. Compared to other non-ionic or cationic surfactants, Vitamin E-TS induced fast hydrate formation and a high conversion rate with an advantage of maintaining flowability during hydrate formation. For example, when using sorbitan monostearate (Span-60), hydrates grew to form a thick layer at the decane/water interface. Due to the strong cohesion of hydrate in the layer, a high relative torque was observed on mixing and the impeller was stopped. Moreover, dodecyl-trimethylammonium bromide (DTAB) showed increased relative torque in the early stage of hydrate formation. From the experimental results under both steady and dynamic operating conditions, Vitamin E-TS showed the optimal performance in quickly producing hydrate slurries and high conversion while maintaining fluid flowability. Accordingly, a continuous process was proposed to use water and decane as feed to produce the hydrate slurry in the presence of Vitamin E-TS.

Organic acids modify the binding selectivity of crosslinked poly(ionic liquid) between Sb(III) and Sb(V)

Antimony binding properties of a poly(ionic liquid), synthesised by crosslinking polymerisation of 1-butyl-3-vinyl-imidazolium bromide with N, N-methylene diacrylamide, in presence of complexing organic acids have been investigated. Sorption of Sb(V), Sb(III), and organic acids from their individual solutions and solutions containing antimony and organic acid by the crosslinked poly(ionic liquid) (P(BuVImBr-MDAA)) were studied at different pH conditions. The complexing organic acids, namely tartaric acid (TA), ascorbic acid (AA), citric acid (CA), EDTA and nitrilotriacetic acid (NTA), were shown to effect substantial changes in the antimony binding properties of P(BuVImBr-MDAA). Remarkable change in Sb(III) – Sb(V) selectivity of P(BuVImBr-MDAA) was observed in the presence of EDTA, NTA and CA. In the presence of EDTA, the selectivity could be toggled between Sb(III) and Sb(V) by varying the solution pH (initial). At pH 2.0 and 3.0, the uptake of Sb(V) was found to be higher than Sb(III) whereas at pH 4.0 there was about 40% reduction in Sb(III) uptake and no uptake of Sb (V). Citric acid and NTA, at pH 2.0 and pH 4.0 respectively, were found to be better choice for Sb(III) Sb(V) separation using P(BuVImBr-MDAA) as there was negligible reduction in Sb(III) uptake and nil uptake of Sb(V). The pH dependent acid speciation and the nature of complexes influenced the selectivity. Tartaric acid was shown to be the most suitable organic acid for effective removal of antimony (both Sb(III) and Sb(V)) without compromising on the binding capacity.

Silibinin encapsulation in polymersome: A promising anticancer nanoparticle for inducing apoptosis and decreasing the expression level of miR-125b/miR-182 in human breast cancer cells

Silibinin, a polyphenolic flavonolignan, is well-known as a safe therapeutic drug without any side effects in the treatment of many malignancies especially cancerous cells. In this study, to overcome problems such as low solubility of silibinin and to enhance its delivery to cancerous cells, we encapsulated silibinin in polymersome nanoparticles. Physicochemical measurements such as dynamic light scattering, transmission electron microscopy, scanning electron microscopy, and atomic force microscopy confirmed the proper encapsulation of silibinin in nanoparticles. Furthermore, antiproliferative and apoptotic activities of silibinin encapsulated in polymersome nanoparticles (SPNs) on MDA-MB-231 breast cancer cell line were validated by3-(4,5-dimethylthiazol-2-yl)-2,5-diphenyltetrazolium bromide assay, Annexin V/Propidium Iodide measurement, and cell cycle analysis. In addition, quantitative reverse transcription polymerase chain reaction analysis confirmed that SPNs can repress oncogenic microRNAs (miRNAs) such as miR-125b and miR-182, as well as antiapoptotic genes such as Bcl2. SPNs can also induce overexpression of proapoptotic target genes such as P53, CASP9, and BAX directly and/or indirectly (through regulation of miRNAs). Our results suggested that polymersomes can be used as stable carriers in nano-dimensions and SPNs can be considered as a promising pharmacological agent for cancer therapy.
