CO2-switchable wormlike micelles based on a switchable ionic liquid and tetradecyl trimethyl ammonium bromide

CO2-responsive wormlike micelles based on ionic liquid 1,1,3,3-tetramethylguanidine-oleic acid (TMG-OA) and cationic surfactant tetradecyl trimethyl ammonium bromide (TTAB) was designed in this work, avoiding the volatileness and flammability of traditional wormlike micelles formed with amines. It provides a new method of preparing CO2-switchable wormlike micelles based on ionic liquid with acidic group. The ionic liquid TMG-OA was prepared by the direct neutralization reaction between TMG and HOA at the molar ratio of 1:1. Due to the excellent stability and switchability demonstrated by thermogravimetry (TGA) and pH, TMG-OA can be treated as nonvolatile surfactant with CO2-responsive acidic group. Then the worm-based viscoelastic fluid is formed by the electrostatic interaction between TTAB and TMG-OA, and the steady and dynamic rheology show that the viscoelastic fluid has CO2-switchable thinning behavior. The switchable behavior is consistent with the reversible transition of microstructure from wormlike micelles to emulsion, which were detected by the dynamic light scattering (DLS) and cryo-transmission electron microscope (Cryo-TEM). The microstructural transition is induced by the reversible conversation between TMG-OA component and HOA component upon CO2 and N-2/heat.

In this study, we synthesize a new amine-based gemini surfactant, butanediyl-alpha,omega-bis(dimethyldodecylammonium bromide) (BDB). It is introduced as a collector in the flotation of lepidolite from the tantalum-niobium mine tailings for the first time at low temperatures. We compare its capability to collect lepidolite with the monomeric surfactant 1-dodecylamine (DA). In bench-scale flotation experiments, the Li2O recovery of lepidolite concentrate with 80 g/t BDB was 10.96% and 31.85% higher than that with 160 g/t DA at 298 and 275 K, respectively, which indicated that BDB is a better collector for lepidolite than DA. BDB is a novel and superior collector for disposing of lepidolite tailings ponds.

Materials and Methods: Human HCC cell lines HepG2 and PLC/PRF/5 were subjected to a 46.5 degrees C heat bath for 10 minutes or to 1% hypoxia for 72 hours without fetal bovine serum and with or without doxorubicin. Cells were then treated with a beta-catenin inhibitor (FH535 or XAV939), a PI3 kinase inhibitor (Ly294002), or niclosamide, a US Food and Drug Administration-approved antihelminthic drug that acts as a mitochondrial decoupler and mixed inhibitor. Surviving cells were analyzed for hCSC markers by flow cytometry, for stemness by colony-forming assay or sphere-forming assay, and for proliferative capacity by MTT assay (where MTT is 3-(4,5-dimethylthiazol-2-Yl)-2,5-diphenyltetrazolium bromide). Expression of proteins related to CSC renewal and proliferation were analyzed by immunoblotting and immunostaining.
