Non-CTAB synthesized gold nanorods-based immunochromatographic assay for dual color and on-site detection of aflatoxins and zearalenones in maize

New developing gold nanorods (AuNRs) are promising alternatives of gold nanospheres in the immunochromatographic assay (ICA) for the rapid screening of mycotoxins in cereals because of their unique threedimensional structure. In this study, we used non-CTAB synthesized AuNRs with different colors as labels on ICA for the screening of four aflatoxins and total zearalenones. The results showed the non-CTAB synthesized AuNRs was more stable and easier for further functionalization than CTAB-based AuNRs. The visual detection limits of developed AuNR-ICA were 0.5 ng/mL for AFB1 and 1 ng/mL for ZEN, and the quantitative detection limits were 0.05 ng/mL for AFB1 and 0.27 ng/mL for ZEN, respectively. The assay could accomplish qualitative detection and quantitative analysis within 20 min. The results of the AuNR-ICA were comparable to those of HPLC-MS/MS for naturally contaminated maize samples, indicating the feasibility of the AuNR-ICA in practical use. Given these performances, the non-CTAB synthesized AuNRs showed great potential for use as an effective label in the ICA development.

Self-Limited Grafting of Sub-Monolayers via Diels-Alder Reaction on Glassy Carbon Electrodes: An Electrochemical Insight

The grafting of molecular monolayers is critical for the functionalization of surfaces. Electrokinetic (EK) properties, such as the electro-osmotic flow (EOF), are influenced by surfactant adsorption at the solid-liquid interface. With the growing popularity of poly(methyl methacrylate) (PMMA) as the substrate for polymeric-based microfluidics, it is important to understand the effect of surfactants on EOF in these devices. Here, we investigate the effect of surfactant chain length and concentration on the electro-osmotic (EO) mobility induced by three cationic surfactants cetyl trimethylammonium bromide (CTAB), trimethylammonium bromide (TTAB), dodecyl trimethylammonium bromide (DTAB) in PMMA microcapillaries. The EO mobility curve as a function of concentration shows three regimes. First, at very low concentrations below 0.002 mM, the mobility is constant and approximately equal to the value obtained with the surfactant-free electrolyte (1 mM KCl). Next, the EOF reverses and mobility increases linearly with surfactant concentration. Finally, the mobility reaches a plateau at a concentration well below surfactant CMC (0.2-mM CTAB, 0.5-mM TTAB and 2-mM DTAB) and decreases at the vicinity of CMC. Our results show that the rate of change in mobility with respect to concentration is a linear function of chain length and increases with longer-chain surfactants. In addition, we deduce the magnitude of Van der Waals or cohesive energy between the adsorbed alkyl chains from the EO mobility values. For the alkyl trimethylammonium surfactants adsorbed on the hydrophobic surface of PMMA, this energy was found to be 0.114 kT smaller than the reported value for ionic surfactants adsorbed on a hydrophilic surface.

The highest RKIP level correlated well with initiation of apoptosis (4.20 vs 1.25 %, p < 0.01). Using a combination of GIXD, TRXF and IRRAS, DPPG/DHDAB 1:1 monolayers were found to form a more stabilised condensed phase compared to pure DPPG, which was composed entirely of electrostatically neutral ion pairs, analogous to the so-called catanionic amphiphiles spontaneously formed by single-chain surfactants with opposing headgroup charges. Despite the lack of lateral charge repulsion the ion paired phase of DPPG/DHDAB exhibited slightly looser chain packing that was observed for DPPG indicating a significant steric effect on packing geometry caused by ion pair formation. Surprisingly, the 7:3 mixture of DPPG/DHDAB formed a completely condensed phase, with no isotherm transitions, in which the chain packing was significantly closer than was found for either DPPG or the totally ion paired monolayer. It is postulated that this mixture forms a distinct DPPG/DHDAB/DPPG ion triplet phase in which the overall negative charge is delocalised across the headgroups. Vesicles composed from the 7:3 mixture formed highly stable dispersions with an increased gel to liquid crystalline phase transition temperature with respect to its pure components. Increasing the proportion of DHDAB above 50 mol% led to demixing between the condensed ion paired phase and the more fluid surfactant, as was clearly observed in epifluorescence images taken of the surface films.

Studies of the effects produced by the solubilization of hydrophobic substances by micellar aggregates in water medium are quite important for applications of viscoelastic surfactant solutions for enhanced oil recovery (EOR), especially in hydraulic fracturing technology. The present paper aims at the investigation of the structural transformations produced by the absorption of an aliphatic hydrocarbon (n-decane) by mixed wormlike micelles of cationic (n-octyltrimethylammonium bromide, C8TAB) and anionic (potassium oleate) surfactants enriched by C8TAB. As a result of contact with a small amount (0.5 wt%) of oil, a highly viscoelastic fluid is transformed to a water-like liquid. By small-angle neutron scattering (SANS) combined with cryo-TEM, it was shown that this is due to the transition of long wormlike micelles with elliptical cross-sections to ellipsoidal microemulsion droplets. The non-spherical shape was attributed to partial segregation of longer- and shorter-tail surfactant molecules inside the surfactant monolayer, providing an optimum curvature for both of them. As a result, the long-chain surfactant could preferably be located in the flatter part of the aggregates and the short-chain surfactant-at the ellipsoid edges with higher curvature. It is proven that the transition proceeds via a co-existence of microemulsion droplets and wormlike micelles, and upon the increase of hydrocarbon content, the size and volume fraction of ellipsoidal microemulsion droplets increase. The internal structure of the droplets was revealed by contrast variation SANS, and it was shown that, despite the excess of the cationic surfactant, the radius of surfactant shell is controlled by the anionic surfactant with longer tail. These findings open a way for optimizing the performance of viscoelastic surfactant fluids by regulating both the mechanical properties of the fluids and their clean-up from the fracture induced by contact with hydrocarbons.
