New Concentration Correlations of NaOH Aqueous Solutions for a Thermodynamic Process

Some processes such as air conditioning absorption systems have been developed as a feasible and economical alternative to help reduce the consumption of fossil fuels and prevent the impact of gas emission produced by electrical air conditioning. However, a main disadvantage of these systems is the absorbent’s crystallization phenomenon in the working mixture, which occurs when the absorbent concentration is higher than the saturation point. Among the aqueous working mixtures, NaOH solution shows several advantages for absorption system applications. The aim of this paper is to propose new mathematical correlations to predict or estimate the NaOH concentrations and refractive index in aqueous solutions (H2O NaOH) for an air conditioning absorption system application. The experimental measurements of NaOH concentration and refractive index were made in situ from aqueous solutions with concentrations from 20 to 50% (weight/weight %, with increases of 5%) and temperatures between 10 and 60 C (with increments of 1 C). Two correlations for predicting the concentration of NaOH and refractive index based on cubic regression models with R2 of 0.99704 and 0.99918, respectively, are presented for the first time. The normalized error for NaOH estimation using experimental data lies between 0.026 and 0.040, and for refractive index, the estimation lies between 0.002 and 0.001. Both correlations present a good fit to predict the NaOH concentration between 25 and 45% of concentration ratio.

The Interaction of Glymes with Surfactant Micelles

The critical micelle concentrations (CMC) values and counterion dissociation (alpha values) have been determined for a number of mixed micellar systems consisting of two typical ionic surfactants and glycol ethers (glymes) as cosurfactants, namely diethylene glycol dimethyl ether, diethylene glycol diethyl ether, triethylene glycol dimethyl ether, and tetraethylene glycol dimethyl ether. Conductance experiments were used to determine the CMC and alpha values of the mixed micelles as a function of glyme concentration in the aqueous mixed solvent. Favorable interactions between sodium dodecyl sulfate micelles and glyme cosurfactants were deduced from the decreases in the CMC values and the large increase in the alpha values of these systems as a function of increasing glyme concentration in the mixed solvents. In contrast to the anionic surfactant/glyme systems, in general, there appeared to be little favorable interactions between the surfactant and glymes when micelles of the cationic surfactant dodecyltrimethylammonium bromide were formed in water/glyme solvent systems containing an increasing amount of the glymes. The interaction of glymes with the surfactant micelles was examined closely via C-13 nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) chemical shifts for both surfactant and glyme carbons; these chemical shifts changes were interpreted in terms of the distribution and the localization of the glymes in the aggregates. Finally, partition constants, determined from two-dimensional diffusion-oriented spectroscopy (2D-DOSY) experiments, were used to calculate thermodynamic quantities of transfer of the glymes between the bulk phase and the self-assembled aggregates. All these results are interpreted in terms of the key contributions that both the glyme ethoxylated groups and alkyl endgroups make to the hydrophobic interactions.

Comparative Study of the Efficacy of Different Artemisia Cina Extracts and their Nanoparticulated Forms against A549 Lung Cancer Cell Line

The present study aimed to investigate the possible antiproliferative effects of the plant extracts of Artemisia cina on lung cancer, and whether the nanoencapsulation of the plant extracts in the form of nanoemulsion would potentiate their therapeutic efficacy. Soxhlet extraction of the freshly collected shade-dried plant using n-hexane and methanol was performed, and the two extracts were loaded within nanoemulsion using the water dilution method. The nanoemulsion was characterized for its particle size, zeta potential, polydispersity, physicochemical stability under refrigeration conditions, and was morphologically visualized using transmission electron microscopy. The antiproliferative activity of the extracts and their nanoforms was tested in A549 lung cancer cell lines using 3-(4,5-dimethylthiazol-2-yl)-2,5-diphenyltetrazolium bromide (MTT) assay. Results revealed the successful preparation of the plant extract-loaded nanoemulsions with suitable particle size from 15-16 nm, a homogenous dispersion with polydispersity index (PDI) ranging from 0.23-0.31, and neutral surface charge. The nanoemulsions displayed insignificant changes in their physicochemical properties after storage for 3 months, and their spherical morphology was confirmed using transmission electron microscopy. Both n-hexane and methanol extracts di splayed antiproliferative activity against A549 cells, with IC50 values of 35.96 +/- 1.7 and 41.6 +/- 2.8 mu g/ml, respectively. On the other hand, their respective nanoparticulated forms displayed superior antiproliferative activity, with IC50 values of 12.59 +/- 0.7 and 5.6 +/- 0.4 mu g/ml, respectively. Therefore, it can be concluded that nanoencapsulation of plant extracts would significantly potentiate their antiproliferative activity, which paves the way towards a more effective anticancer therapy.

Adsorption removal of Ni(II) and phenol from aqueous solution by modified attapulgite and its composite hydrogel

Attapulgite (ATP) and its organically modified products have been investigated for potential applications in environmental remediation. In this work, a variety of modifiers with different functional groups, including saturated sodium chloride solution (NaCl), cetyltrimethyl ammonium bromide (CTAB) and humic acid (HA), were used to treat attapulgite clay firstly, and then with the modified ATP as adsorbent and acrylamide (AAm) as monomer, polyacrylamide/modified attapulgite (PAAm/modified ATP) composite hydrogel which could adsorb heavy metal ions Ni(II) and organic pollutants phenol were synthesized. The structure of the raw ATP and modified ATP was specified with Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FT-IR), X-ray diffraction (XRD) and Transmission electron microscope (TEM). The experiments indicated that the modified ATP and composite hydrogel possessed good adsorption properties for Ni(II) ions and phenol. The adsorption capacity of PAAm/HA-ATP hydrogel for Ni(II) was as high as 64.3 mg/g, which was 194.9% of pure hydrogel. The adsorption isotherm of HA-modified ATP (HA-ATP) and adsorption kinetics of PAAm/HA-ATP composite hydrogel was particularly concerned. The adsorption isotherm equation fitted well on the Langmuir model and R-L values ranged from 0.04 to 0.12 with different temperatures, indicated that the HA-ATP was a suitable adsorbent for adsorption of Ni(II) ions from wastewater. The obtained kinetics data for Ni(II) ions adsorption onto the PAAm/HA-ATP were described well by the pseudo-second-order model (R-2 > 0.99). As for the adsorption of phenol, double-modification proved to be the most effective method, and its optimal adsorption capacity was obtained on PAAm/CTAB-HA-ATP hydrogel.

Minimizing the Trade-Off between Photocurrent and Photovoltage in Triple-Cation Mixed-Halide Perovskite Solar Cells

Its lower bandgap makes formamidinium lead iodide (FAPbI(3)) a more suitable candidate for single-junction solar cells than pure methylammonium lead iodide (MAPbI(3)). However, its structural and thermodynamic stability is improved by introducing a significant amount of MA and bromide, both of which increase the bandgap and amplify trade-off between the photocurrent and photovoltage. Here, we simultaneously stabilized FAPbI(3 )into a cubic lattice and minimized the formation of photoinactive phases such as hexagonal FAPbI(3) and PbI2 by introducing 5% MAPbBr(3) , as revealed by synchrotron X-ray scattering. We were able to stabilize the composition (FA(0.95)MA(0.05)Cs(0.05))Pb(I-0.95 Br-0.05)(3), which exhibits a minimal trade-off between the photocurrent and photovoltage. This material shows low energetic disorder and improved charge-carrier dynamics as revealed by photothermal deflection spectroscopy (PDS) and transient absorption spectroscopy (TAS), respectively. This allowed the fabrication of operationally stable perovskite solar cells yielding reproducible efficiencies approaching 22%.

Surfactant-modified titania for cadmium removal and textile effluent treatment together being environmentally safe for seed germination and growth of Vigna radiata

The present work describes synthesis, detailed characterization, and application of bare and surfactant-modified titania nanomaterials (NMs) for various wastewater treatment applications as individual cases like cadmium (Cd) removal, methylene blue (MB) dye degradation, and treatment of real textile and dyeing industry effluent. These NMs are used as adsorbents and photocatalysts in an indegenously developed end-to-end treatment process and a photocatalytic reactor for treatment of textile wastewater. The used NMs are suitably filtered and recovered for reuse; however, still this work focusses on the extent of potential risk and environmental safety of these engineered NMs towards seed germination and plant growth, in the event they escape wastewater treatment plants and reach out to natural water bodies and soil systems, accumulate over a period of time, and comes in contact with plant species. For synthesis, sol-gel method was utilized; cetyltrimethylammonium bromide (CTAB) and sodium dodecyl sulfate (SDS) were used as cationic and anionic surfactants, respectively, to act as particle growth templates and improve surface morphology. Detailed characterization involved XRD (X-ray diffraction), FTIR (Fourier-transform Infrared Spectroscopy), SEM (Scanning Electron Microscopy), TEM (Transmission Electron Microscopy), EDX (Energy Dispersive X-ray analysis), and BET (Brunauer-Emmett-Teller) surface area analysis. Improved morphology and surface properties, from irregular shape in Bare TiO2 to spherical shape in surfactant-modified titania, led to enhanced Cd removal and MB dye degradation efficiency. Bare TiO2 was used for complete treatment of textile wastewater, which took 5 h in achieving water quality, which is safe for discharge and reuse as per norms of Central Pollution Control Board (CPCB), Govt. of India. Phytotoxicity studies of these NMs at a wide concentration range (0-1000 mg L-1) were undertaken towards Vigna radiata, and 500 mg L-1 concentration was found to be optimally safe for seed germination and plant growth.

A BMSCs-laden quercetin/duck’s feet collagen/hydroxyapatite sponge for enhanced bone regeneration

Treating critical-sized bone defects is an important issue in the field of tissue engineering and bone regeneration. From the various biomaterials for bone regeneration, collagen is an important and widely used biomaterial in biomedical applications, hence, it has numerous attractive properties including biocompatibility, hyper elastic behavior, prominent mechanical properties, support cell adhesion, proliferation, and biodegradability. In the present study, collagen was extracted from duck’s feet (DC) as a new collagen source and combined with quercetin (Qtn), a type of flavonoids found in apple and onions and has been reported to affect the bone metabolism, for increasing osteogenic differentiation. Further, improving osteoconductive properties of the scaffold hydroxyapatite (HAp) a biodegradable material was used. We prepared 0, 25, 50, and 100 mu M Qtn/DC/HAp sponges using Qtn, DC, and HAp. Their physiochemical characteristics were evaluated using scanning electron microscopy, compressive strength, porosity, and Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy. To assess the effect of Qtn on osteogenic differentiation, we cultured bone marrow mesenchymal stem cells on the sponges and evaluated by alkaline phosphatase, 3-4-2, 5-diphenyl tetrazolium bromide assay, and real-time polymerase chain reaction. Additionally, they were studied implanting in rat, analyzed through Micro-CT and histological staining. From our in vitro and in vivo results, we found that Qtn has an effect on bone regeneration. Among the different experimental groups, 25 mu M Qtn/DC/HAp sponge was found to be highly increased in cell proliferation and osteogenic differentiation compared with other groups. Therefore, 25 mu M Qtn/DC/HAp sponge can be used as an alternative biomaterial for bone regeneration in critical situations.
