Electrodeposition of Nickel/Graphene Oxide Particle Composite Coatings: Effect of Surfactants on Graphene Oxide Dispersion and Coating Performance

The dispersibility of graphene oxide particles (GOs) in nickel electrolytes is critical for its uniform incorporation in the nickel matrix during the electrodeposition process. In this study, we study the fundamental interaction of surfactants and nickel ionic strength for uniform and stable incorporation of GOs in nickel electrolytes and their effect on coating performance. The results indicate that the non-ionic surfactant Polyethylene glycol (PEG) has the optimal dispersibility of GOs in nickel electrolyte, followed by the cationic surfactant Cetyltrimethylammonium bromide (CTAB) and the anionic surfactant Sodium dodecyl sulfate (SDS). It is also noted that the increasing nickel ionic strength would deteriorate the stability of GOs, attributing to the generation of cross-linking of high strength divalent nickel ions with dispersed graphene oxide. The electrodeposited coatings show that more incorporation of graphene oxide in the coating is achieved when the PEG surfactant is used, which leads to an increased hardness by 146% and a decreased friction coefficient by 72.7% under low nickel sulfamate concentration (200 g l(-1)), compared to pure nickel coating. Eventually, the study shows that higher nickel ionic strength would deteriorate the performance of the coatings, while the selection of proper surfactant can compensate for it.

Discovery of novel indolyl-1,2,4-triazole hybrids as potent vascular endothelial growth factor receptor-2 (VEGFR-2) inhibitors with potential anti-renal cancer activity

Targeting VEGFR-2 signaling pathway is well-established as an important approach for the treatment of solid tumors, particularly renal cancer. Herein, novel indolyl-1,2,4-triazole hybrids were designed and synthesized as VEGFR-2 kinase inhibitors with potential anti-renal cancer activity. The structures of the newly synthesized compounds were confirmed based on their spectral and elemental analyses. The results of in vitro kinase assay indicated that all target compounds revealed submicromolar inhibition of VEGFR-2 kinase enzyme. Analogs 5c, 5d and 9b emerged as the most active compounds (IC50 = 0.034-0.064 mu M), showing VEGFR-2 inhibitory activity much superior to that of sunitinib reference drug (IC50 = 0.075 mu M). Moreover, compounds 5a, 8c, 9d, 12c were equipotent to sunitinib against VEGFR-2 kinase. Additionally, the most potent compounds were further examined for their anticancer activity against two human renal cancer cell lines. All screened compounds effectively inhibited the growth of the two tested cell lines with IC50 values spanning from sub-micromolar to low micromolar levels. Compounds 5b, 5d, 11c and 12c were three to five-fold more potent than sunitinib against CAKI-1 cell line. Analogue 8c was superior/comparable to sunitinib against CAKI-1/A498 cell lines. Moreover, compound 9d showed double potency of sunitinib against A498 cell line. Besides, compounds 8c and 12c demonstrated a safety profile much better than that of sunitinib against non-cancer human renal cells. Free-Standing Ion-Conductive Gels Based on Polymerizable Imidazolium Ionic Liquids

A free-standing ion-conductive gel is formed by spontaneous self-assembly of the amphiphilic ionic liquid 1-tetradecyl-3-methylimidazolium chloride (C-14 MIm center dot Cl) and the cross-linkable monomer 6-hexanediol diacrylate (HDODA) in a mixed solvent of 1-octene, 1-butanol, and water. The formation of the anisotropic HDODA structures upon introduction of the acrylate ionic liquid was accompanied by a change of the bicontinuous phase to be undulated, which increased the ionic path through the formed film, resulting in reduced ionic conductivity. Such coaxial structured gels may be a promising route for developing highly ion-conductive as well as mechanically stable solid electrolyte systems.

The synthesis of drug delivery systems based on hollow mesoporous silica nanoparticles (MSNs) is still a major challenge. In this work, the hollow hybrid MSNs were successfully prepared by cetyltrimethylammonium bromide-directed sol-gel process and one-step hydrothermal treatment process. The hollow hybrid MSNs had hybrid ethane-bridged frameworks with the uniform particle size (250 nm) and mesoporous pore diameter (3.7 nm). The polyacrylic acid (PAA) encapsulated drug delivery system based on hollow hybrid MSNs was prepared by using silanization, surface modification, doxorubicin hydrochloride (DOX) loading, and PAA coating. Drug encapsulation and release behavior at different temperatures and pH were studied by using DOX as a model guest molecule. The results displayed that the modified hollow ethane-bridged MSNs possessed good biocompatibility and excellent thermal/pH-dual-sensitive drug release property. This novel thermal/pH-sensitive drug delivery system based on hollow ethane-bridged MSNs has the advantages of feasible synthesis, no cytotoxicity, and good drug loading capacity, which may have potential applications in the anticancer therapy.

Herein, we demonstrate the in situ fabrication of CsPbClBr2 nanocrystal films by using mixed ligands of 2-phenylethanamine bromide (PEABr) and 3,3-diphenylpropylamine bromide (DPPABr). PEABr dominates the formation of quasi-two-dimensional perovskites with small-n domains, while DPPABr induces the formation of large-n domains. Strong blue emission at 470 nm with a photoluminescence quantum yield up to 60% was obtained by mixing the two ligands due to the formation of a narrower quantum-well width distribution. Based on such films, efficient blue PeLEDs with a maximum external quantum efficiency of 8.8% were achieved at 473 nm. Furthermore, we illustrate that the use of dual-ligand with respective tendency of forming small-n and large-n domains is a versatile strategy to achieve narrow quantum-well width distribution for photoluminescence enhancement. Designing efficient blue perovskite LEDs by using mixed halides perovskite is still a challenge, limited mainly by the phase segregation issue. Here, the authors demonstrate in situ fabrication of quasi-2D CsPbClBr2 nanocrystal films with mixed ligands to overcome the constraint.

A rapid and simple method for the removal of dyes and organophosphorus pesticides from water and soil samples using deep eutectic solvent embedded sponge

A new treatment method using a deep eutectic solvent embedded melamine sponge (DES-MS) was studied for the removal of organic pollutants from water and soil samples. Five organophosphorus pesticides (OPPs) consisting of azinphos-methyl (AZP), parathion-methyl (PRT), fenitrothion (ENT), diazinon (DIZ) and chlorpyrifos (CPF), and two dyes including acid blue 29 (AB29) and malachite green (MG) were used as the model pollutants. DESs were easily prepared from tetrabutylammonium bromide (TBABr) and various fatty acids. The synthesised DESs were loaded into the sponge before being utilized for the removal of the studied pollutants. After the removal, the residual OPPs or dyes in the supernatant was quantified by high performance liquid chromatography or derivative spectrophotometry, respectively. The proposed method was simple, rapid, environmentally friendly and effective with the removal efficiency higher than 70% for various samples.
