Competing Segregation of Br- and Cl- to a Surface Coated with a Cationic Surfactant: Direct Measurements of Ion and Solvent Depth Profiles

Ion-surface scattering experiments can be used to measure elemental depth profiles on the angstrom scale in complex liquid mixtures. We employ NICISS (neutral impact collision ion scattering spectroscopy) to measure depth profiles of dissolved ions and solvent in liquid glycerol containing the cationic surfactant tetrahexylammonium bromide (THA(+)/Br-) at 0.013 M and mixtures of NaBr + NaCl at 0.4 M total concentration. Thermally-driven hybrid vapor absorption cycle: Simultaneous and flexible use of steam generation heat pump and refrigeration applications

For flexible use of a thermally driven absorption system for heating and cooling effects, a hybrid absorption cycle, which contains a sub-heat pump and a sub-refrigeration cycle, is proposed. Each sub-cycle shares a generator and a condenser, and the flow rate of the solution and the refrigerant entering each sub-cycle is adjusted by the general operating conditions, such as the heating source temperature and flow rate of the working fluid. The proposed hybrid absorption cycle introduced the solution distribution ratio to easily adjust the amount of the solution flow rate entering each sub-cycle, and as a result, the flexible control of the desired heating and cooling capacities was simultaneously achieved. We first proposed the experimental investigation using the pilot-scale hybrid absorption system for simultaneously producing 120 degrees C steam of approximately 110 kg/h and 8 degrees C cooling effect. The experimental analysis validified the steady-state theoretical model, and the theoretical simulation characterized the operating characteristics, such as the variations in three pressure levels, the circulation ratios, and the system performance in terms of the practical operating conditions and the defined solution distribution ratio. It was noted that the decrease in the solution distribution ratio, i.e., more amount of the solution entering the sub-refrigeration cycle than entering the sub-heat pump cycle, contributed the decrease in the COP of the sub-refrigeration cycle from 0.74 to 0.72, but brought about the increase in total COP from 0.53 to 0.60. It was concluded that all the parameters considered greatly influenced the heat transfer characteristics of the hybrid absorption cycle, and the heating and cooling effects could be flexibly controlled by the solution distribution ratio. The present study provides comprehensive and valid data for the further experimental investigations to determine main parameters that affect the performance characteristics of the proposed hybrid absorption cycle.

Stabilisation Treatments for Paper with Green Copper Pigment Verdigris

The focus of this research is the stabilisation of paper with Verdigris, a green copper pigment. Due to its corrosive effects on paper, many important documents, paintings and maps are in danger. The efficiency of several commercially available deacidification agents on paper samples with Verdigris was tested, including magnesium-based Bookkeeper (R) dispersion, nano calcium hydroxide containing Nanorestore (R) and CaLoSiL (R) dispersions as well as a recently developed dispersion of nano calcium carbonate. The antioxidant tetrabutylammonium bromide was tested either alone or in combination with nano calcium based deacidification agents. The effect of the treatments was evaluated using colour, tensile strength, degree of polymerization and pH measurements. The results indicate that acidic degradation does not play a major role during accelerated degradation of paper containing Verdigris with moderately acidic pH value and that oxidative decay could be the main culprit of the decay. The method described, which involves the use of antioxidant tetrabutylammonium bromide in combination with calcium carbonate based deacidification dispersion, was proved to have a superior effect against degradation of paper with Verdigris in comparison to the treatments which involve deacidification agents only. Nano calcium hydroxide based deacidification agents result in high pH values of the paper samples and therefore cannot be advised for use on paper documents.

Assessment of the potential of a reduced dose of dimethyl disulfide plus metham sodium on soilborne pests and cucumber growth

Methyl bromide (MB), a dominant ozone-depleting substance, is scheduled to be completely phased out for soil fumigation by December 30th 2018, in China. The combined effects of dimethyl disulfide (DMDS) plus metham sodium (MNa) were assessed in controlling soilborne pests for soil fumigation. A study was designed in laboratory for the evaluation of the efficacy of DMDS + MNa to control major soilborne pests. At the same time, two trials were conducted in cucumber field located in Tongzhou (in 2012) and Shunyi (in 2013), respectively, in order to assess the potential of DMDS + MNa in controlling soilborne pests. Laboratory studies disclosed positive synergistic effects of almost all four used combinations on Meloidogyne spp., Fusarium spp., Phytophthora spp., Abutilon theophrasti and Digitaria sanguinalis. Field trials found that DMDS + MNa (30 + 21 g a. i. m(-2)), both at a 50% reduced dose, effectively suppressed Meloidogyne spp. with a low root galling index (2.1% and 11.7%), significantly reduced the levels of Phytophthora and Fusarium spp. with a low root disease index (7.5% and 15.8%), gave very high cucumber yields (6.75 kg m(-2) and 10.03 kg m(-2)), and increased income for cucumber growers with the highest economic benefits (20.91 (sic) m(-2) and 23.58 (sic) m(-2)). The combination treatment provided similar results as MB standard dose treatment (40 g a. i. m-2) or DMDS standard dose treatment (60 g a. i. m(-2)) in pest control and yield, but was more effective than MNa standard dose treatment (42 g a. i. m(-2)). Usage of all chemical treatments gave better significant results than the untreated group of control. Considering the economic benefits, the DMDS plus MNa combination (30 + 21 g a. i. m(-2)) could be used for soil fumigation in cucumber production in China.

The effect of lithium bromide on the performance of ammonia-water absorption-resorption heat pump system

Ammonia absorption-resorption heat pump (ARHP) has lower operating pressure than the absorption heat pump, and it can also make full use of low-grade heat in the heating process. But the low coefficient of performance (COP) limits the applications of ammonia ARHP. Lithium bromide, as the third working medium, is added to the traditional ammonia-water working pair to improve the performance of the system. In this paper, COPs of NH3-H2O-LiBr ternary working fluid ARHP systems under different operating temperatures are studied by a simulation model established in Aspen Plus. The operating temperature parameters ranges of the ternary ARHP are compared with those of the binary ARHP. The simulation results indicate that the COP of the ternary system is greatly influenced by the concentration of lithium bromide, and it improves up to 21% at T-Gen = 100 degrees C, T-Des = T-Abs = T-Res = 40 degrees C, and P-H/P-L, = 1.5/0.48 MPa. Besides, when lithium bromide is added to the binary ARHP, the minimum values of (TGen) and T-Res are reduced to 87 degrees C and 3 degrees C, respectively. In contrast, the maximum values of T-Abs and T-Res are increased to 47.5 degrees C compared with the binary system. The NH3-H2O-LiBr ternary working fluid makes the low-grade heat reused by the ARHP more efficiently.
