Quantitative Structure-Cytotoxicity Relationship of 2-Arylazolylchromones and 2-Triazolylchromones

Background/Aim: 4H-1-Benzopyran-4-one (chromone), present in various flavonoids as a backbone structure, has been used for the synthesis of anticancer drugs. The study aimed at investigating the cytotoxicity of eight 2-arylazolylchromones and twelve 2-triazolylchromones against four human oral squamous cell carcinoma (OSCC) cell lines and three human normal mesenchymal oral cells, and then performed a quantitative structure-activity relationship (QSAR) analysis. Materials and Methods: Cell viability was determined by the 3-(4,5-dimethylthiazol-2-yl)-2,5-diphenyltetrazolium bromide method. The distribution of cells to various phases of cell cycle was determined by cell cycle analysis. A total of 3,218 physicochemical, structural and quantum chemical features were calculated for QSAR analysis from the most stabilized structure optimized using CORINA. Results: 2-[4-(4-fluorophenyl)-1H-imidazol-1-yl]-4H-1-benzopyran-4-one [6] had the highest tumor-specificity (TS), comparable with that of 5-flurouracil (5-FU) and doxorubicin, inducing cytostatic growth inhibition, accumulation of G(2)+M phase cells with no cells in the G(1) phase. All eight 2-triazolylchromones showed much lower tumor-specificity, confirming our previous finding. Tumor-specificity was also correlated with 3D shape, topological shape, size, ionization potential, and the presence of more than two aromatic rings in the molecule and imidazole ring in the nitrogen-containing heterocyclic ring. Conclusion: [6] can be a lead compound for designing anticancer drugs.

Understanding the mass-transfer of Br species in an aqueous and quaternary ammonium polybromide biphasic system via particle-impact electrochemical analysis

In this article, we present our studies on the mass-transfer of Br species existing in an acidic aqueous solution containing quaternary ammonium bromide (QBr) during electro-oxidation of Br-. We found that the mass-transfer of quaternary ammonium polybromide (QBr(2n)(+1)) droplets toward a Pt ultra-microelectrode (UME) are mainly governed by diffusion, although their migration is not negligible. We further revealed that the migration of Br- in a QBr(2n)(+1) droplet significantly affects the current associated with the electro-oxidation of Br- during the collision of the droplet on a Pt UME. Finally, we observed current spikes in which the current decayed and reached a certain steady state with a non-zero value. These were interpreted based on Br–transfer at the interface between water and a QBr(2n)(+1) droplet (water vertical bar QBr(2n+1)) using finite element analysis. The presented electrochemical analyses would be potentially important to understand the operating mechanism of redox flow batteries (RFBs) using Br-/Br-2 as a half redox reaction to inhibit the self-discharge that occurs during the charging process. Portable Device for Quick Detection of Viable Bacteria in Water

(1) Background: Access to clean water is a very important factor for human life. However, pathogenic microorganisms in drinking water often cause diseases, and convenient/inexpensive testing methods are urgently needed. Combination of Imidazolium Bromine and Tetrabutylammonium Bromide for CH4 Purification from Simulated Biogas by Hydrate-Based Gas Separation

Biogas is one of the green energy resources. To enhance usage of biogas (64.0 mol % CH4/CO2) and reduce the greenhouse effect, CH4 purification by the hydrate-based gas separation (HBGS) technology was studied in this work. Green solvent ionic liquid [BMIm] Br and thermodynamic promoter tetrabutylammonium bromide (TBAB) were added as hydrate additives to investigate their influence on hydrate formation. [BMIm] Br has an inhibition effect on CH4 and CH4/CO2 hydrate phase equilibrium. The combination of [BMIm] Br and TBAB decreased CH4/CO2 hydrate phase equilibrium pressure under identical temperature. Kinetics of CH4 and CO2 hydrate formation in [BMIm] Br solution were investigated. Gas uptake in the hydrate phase increased when [BMIm] Br concentrations changed from 1000 to 2000 and 3000 ppm. The influence factors of gas liquid ratio, temperature, pressure, and concentration on biogas hydrate separation were studied. Separation results were analyzed based on CH4 mole fraction in the residual gas, CH4 recovery, separation factor, phase equilibrium constant, and hydrate ratio of CH4 and CO2. CH4 in residual-phase gas can be enriched from initial 64.00 to 79.13 mol %, and the maximum CH4 recovery was 85.19%. For the combination of TBAB and [BMIm] Br on simulated biogas hydrate separation study, the CH4 value in residual gas was enhanced to 76.96 mol % and CH4 recovery was above 90%. The synergistic effect of TBAB + [BMIm] Br was not obvious compared to the result in pure [BMIm] Br solution, and gas storage in the hydrate phase decreased on the whole.

Cytotoxic effect of graphene oxide-functionalized gold nanoparticles in human breast cancer cell lines

As the global burden of cancer is on the rise it is essential to develop alternate therapeutics that confer zero or minimum side effects. In this experiment, we evaluated the anticancer efficacy of graphene oxide-functionalized gold nanoparticles (GO-AuNPs) in human breast cancer cell lines MCF7 and MDA-MB-231. MTT assay revealed a dose-dependent decline in cancer cell survival. Significant alterations were detected in normal cellular morphology after treatment. Two different cell staining methods viz. acridine orange-ethidium bromide staining and annexin-cy3.18/6-carboxyfluorescein diacetate staining confirmed that the GO-AuNPs rendered their detrimental effect in cancer cells through apoptosis. To decipher the mode of apoptosis Western blotting was performed in which expression pattern of several proteins (PARP1, P53, P21, Bcl2, Bax, Caspase 9 and Caspase 3) established the intrinsic apoptosis pathway in these cell lines after GO-AuNP exposure. Intracellular calcium level, as measured by energy dispersive X-ray fluorescence analysis, was present at non-detectable level following treatment that can be linked to the cell cycle arrest and apoptotic cell death in them. Thus, GO-AuNPs were found effective in both types of human breast cancer cells viz. hormone-responsive MCF7 and chemoresistant MDA-MB-231 and can be considered as a highly potential anticancer agent in breast cancer therapy.

Biodegradable CA/CPB electrospun nanofibers for efficient retention of airborne nanoparticles

The increase of the industrialization process brought the growth of pollutant emissions into the atmosphere. At the same time, the demand for advances in aerosol filtration is evolving towards more sustainable technologies. Electrospinning is gaining notoriety, once it enables to produce polymeric nanofibers with different additives and also the obtaining of small pore sizes and fiber diameters; desirable features for air filtration materials. Therefore, this work aims to evaluate the filtration performance of cellulose acetate (CA) nanofibers and cationic surfactant cetylpyridinium bromide (CPB) produced by electrospinning technique for retention of aerosol nanoparticles. The pressure drop and collection efficiency measurements of sodium chloride (NaCl) aerosol particles (diameters from 7 to 300 nm) were performed using Scanning Mobility Particle Sizer (SMPS). The average diameter of the electrospun nanofibers used was 239 nm, ranging from 113 to 398 nm. Experimental results indicated that the nanofibers showed good permeability (10(-11) m(2)) and high-efficiency filtration for aerosol nanoparticles (about 100 %), which can include black carbon (BC) and the new coronavirus. The pressure drop was 1.8 kPa at 1.6 cm s(-1), which is similar to reported for some high-efficiency nanofiber filters. In addition, it also retains BC particles present in air, which was about 90 % for 375 nm and about 60 % for the 880 nm wavelength. Finally, this research provided information for future designs of indoor air filters and filter media for facial masks with renewable, non-toxic biodegradable, and potential antibacterial characteristics. Accelerating Effect of DMAP on CuI Catalyzed Buchwald-Hartwig C-N Coupling: Mechanistic Insight to the Reaction Pathway

An efficient methodology has been developed for C-N cross-coupling reaction between aryl halide and amine using a catalytic system comprised of CuI and N,N-dimethyl amino pyridine (DMAP). Coupling reactions were carried out in DMSO at 120 degrees C in presence of 5 mol% CuI, 20 mol% DMAP and 2.5 equivalent of KOH. Addition of DMAP was found to be beneficial in accelerating the rate of reaction significantly. Both aryl iodides and aryl bromides could be successfully coupled with different primary and secondary amines to furnish the desired cross-coupling product in high yield. A copper complex [Cu(DMAP)(4)I]I made by combining CuI and DMAP was found to produce superior result for the Buchwlad-Hartwig cross coupling reaction. The use of 2 mol% of the copper complex is sufficient to produce high yield of the product.

The controlled study of surfactants on the morphologies of three-dimensional turbine-like V2O5 for the application of high performance lithium ion storage

Rationally designing the morphology of V2O5 nanomaterial has caused great significance in the applications of lithium ion storage due to its promising physico-chemical properties. Herein, various V2O5 hierarchical structures have been first successfully synthesized via a facile hydrothermal method followed by an annealing treatment. The V2O5 morphologies undergo a nanoribbon -> nanosheet -> micro flower structure process with hydrothermal reaction increasing time. After surfactant-assisted hydrothermal process, four types of as-prepared surfactants modified V2O5 exhibit extraordinary valuable morphologies and excellent electrochemical properties in comparison with unmodified V2O5. Especially, cetyltrimethyl ammonium bromide modified V2O5 (defined as V5@CTAB) displays a unique morphology of the combination of three-dimensional (3D) turbine-like micro flowers and low-dimensional nanoparticles. As a thin film cathode material free of binders and conductive agent for lithium-ion batteries, V5@CTAB shows the exceptional high reversible specific capacity of 237 mAh g(-1) at current density of 200 uA cm(-2), outstanding rate performance, as well as an excellent cycling stability (only 0.10% capacity loss per cycle for 35 cycles). The excellent electrochemical performance might be ascribed that the unique 3D turbine-like microstructure favors the efficient contact between active material and electrolyte, providing more efficient 3D electron transfer pathways, shortening Li+ diffusion distances and thus leading to fast kinetics. These advantages make the 3D turbine-like V2O5 micro flowers structure a promising candidate of the cathode material for lithium-ion batteries.

Solar-light-driven non-bias photoelectrolysis for bleach production from sea water and atmospheric oxygen

Non-bias production of a bleach aqueous solution was successfully demonstrated using a solar-driven photoelectrochemical cell consisting of a metal-oxide-semiconductor photoanode and Pt-based cathode. Both hypochlorous acid (HClO) and hypobromous acid (HBrO) were generated via two-electron oxidation of chloride (Cl-) and bromide (Br-) at the photoanode. The faradaic efficiency for HBrO production gradually improved with increasing Br- concentration in the electrolyte solution. Although a certain amount of HBrO was produced from a 1 mM NaBr aqueous solution, the co-existence of Cl- drastically enhanced the amount of HBrO produced from the dilute Br- solution. The use of a gas diffusion electrode (GDE) composed of a Pt/carbon catalyst layer for efficient 4-electron O-2 reduction enabled us to achieve the anodic photocurrent derived from the oxidation of Cl- and Br- under AM-1.5 simulated solar light irradiation. Moreover, we successfully accomplished convenient and simple production of aqueous bleach from artificial sea water via irradiating the photoanode with simulated solar light without applying external bias.
