From the electrical conductivity measurements, various parameters such as critical micelle concentration (CMC), degree of ionization of the counterion on the micelles (alpha), the standard Gibbs energy of micellization (Delta G(m)(o)), etc. have been evaluated for different concentrations of carbohydrates at different temperatures. FT-IR spectroscopy is utilized to record the structural changes occurring in the studied systems at below CMC, at CMC, and above CMC concentrations. The various surface parameters including CMC, surface tension at CMC (gamma(cmc)), surface pressure at the interface (Pi(cmc)), the maximum surface excess concentration (Gamma(max)), and the minimum area per surfactant molecule at the surface, A(min) have also been obtained using surface tension measurements. Effect of Adding Potassium Chloride on Tetra-n-butyl Ammonium Chloride Semiclathrate Thermal Stability at Atmospheric Pressure

Tetra-n-butyl ammonium chloride (TBAC) is known to form semiclathrate complexes with water. In this work, the melting points and latent heats of fusion of these semiclathrate structures were determined using Differential Scanning Calorimetry (DSC). A phase diagram was created for binary TBAC-H2O from 0 to 7.775 molal TBAC at atmospheric pressure. Below 2 molal TBAC, the semiclathrate is in equilibrium with free, bulk water. At approximately 2 molal TBAC a congruent melting point at 286.96 K is observed in this phase diagram. Beyond this composition, there is no free, bulk water present, and there are multiple forms of the TBAC-H2O semiclathrate complexes with varying amounts of water. Ternary TBAC-KCl-H2O systems were created by adding KCl to 1, 1.5, 2, 3, and 4 molal TBAC solutions to give ionic strength fractions of TBAC (Y-TBAC) from 0.25 to 1. It was found that the melting points of the TBAC-H2O semiclathrate were unaffected as long as there was a sufficient amount of free, bulk water at concentrations less than 2 molal TBAC. However, at greater concentrations, adding KCl disrupted the normal TBAC-H2O semiclathrate complex, and KCl was incorporated into new, TBAC-KCl-H2O complexes that melted at higher temperatures than previously reported for similar TBAC-NaCl-H2O complexes.

In nutrient broth solution (NBS), ATMB at 250 and 500 ppm reduced individual halo-bacteria, that is, Halomonas halodenitrificans, Halomonas eurihalina, Alkalibacillus haloalkaliphilus and Salimicrobium album, by averages of 0 center dot 64 and 1 center dot 90, 1 center dot 5 and 2 center dot 61, 0 center dot 90 and 2 center dot 27, 1 center dot 65 and 3 center dot 36 log CFU per ml respectively in 5 min. ATMB treatment in SBS at 500 ppm for 18 h resulted in a reduction of H. halodenitrificans, H. eurihalina, A. haloalkaliphilus and S. album by averages of 1 center dot 9, 1 center dot 25, 0 center dot 96 and 1 center dot 34 log CFU per ml respectively, when compared with the controls. Effective Dephenolation of Effluent from Petroleum Industry Using Ionic-Liquid-Induced Hybrid Adsorbent

In this study, naturally heated clay (NHC) was complexed with synthesized ionic liquid (1-ethyl-3-methyl imidazolium bromide solution (EMIB)) to form NHC/EMIB composite. The effectiveness of NHC/EMIB composite in comparison with naturally heated clay (NHC) as an eco-friendly adsorbent for dephenolation of petroleum effluent was investigated. The adsorbents were characterized using Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy and scanning electron microscopy. Batch mode experiments were conducted to ascertain the effect of process variables on adsorption. Removal efficiencies of 81.70% and 91.7% were obtained for NHC and NHC/EMIB composite, respectively, at 25 min, 308 K, pH 4.0 and 150 mu m. The linear and nonlinear isotherm data fitted best to the Langmuir model for both adsorbent, while the linear and nonlinear kinetic data fitted best to pseudo-second-order and pseudo-first-order models for both adsorbents. The estimated average thermodynamic parameters (Delta G(0) = -9.653 kJ/mol, Delta H-0 = -28.295 kJ/mol and Delta S-0 = -46.395 kJ/mol) revealed the feasibility, exothermic nature and spontaneity, respectively, of the studied adsorption system.

A new mononuclear copper complex [Cu(dpq)(L-Met)Cl] . H2O has been designed and synthesized using the phenanthroline derivative dipyridoquinoxaline (dpq). Binding of the complex to DNA has been investigated by absorption spectroscopy, fluorescence spectroscopy, and agarose gel electrophoresis. Spectrophotometric studies have showed that the mode of binding is intercalation with a binding constant K-b of 1.25 x 10(3) L mol(-1). Additionally, the complex could quench an ethidium bromide-DNA complex. The apparent binding constant value for the complex is 1.89 x 10 (5) L mol(-1), which is slightly lower than the classical binding constant of 10(7) L mol(-1). In addition, the quenching mechanism of the complex has been not static or dynamic. Agarose gel electrophoresis has shown that the complex cleaved circular pBR322 plasmid DNA to both nicked and linear forms; at higher concentrations and longer reaction times, the cutting results have been improved. The cleavage mechanism between the complex and plasmid DNA may involve singlet oxygen and hydroxyl radical as reactive oxygen species.

Surfactant-modified natural zeolites as carriers for diclofenac sodium release: A preliminary feasibility study for pharmaceutical applications

This research aimed to investigate the feasibility of using cetyltrimethylammonium bromide-modified natural zeolites (clinoptilolite and chabazite) as carriers for diclofenac sodium release. The surfactant-modified natural zeolites were characterized by X-ray fluorescence, X-ray powder diffraction, scanning electron microscopy, thermogravimetric analysis, differential thermogravimetric analysis, and Brunauer-Emmett-Teller surface area analysis. On the other hand, drug adsorption and in vitro release kinetics in simulated intestinal fluid were also investigated to assess the potential pharmaceutical applications of clinoptilolite and chabazite. Results showed that the higher the surfactant concentration, the greater the adsorption capacity of the surface-modified natural zeolites due to the formation of bilayers on their surface. Diclofenac sodium adsorption tests on natural zeolites showed that the adsorption capacity was lower in the natural zeolites than in the surfactant-modified natural zeolites, which indicates that the modification with the surfactant enhanced diclofenac sodium release. The surfactant-modified chabazite showed a very rapid 100% release of diclofenac sodium after 3 h, so it is not suitable for prolonged release, whereas the surfactant-modified clinoptilolite showed a rapid initial release, but maintained a gradual release, being suitable for prolonged release since after 6 h a 100% released of diclofenac sodium was not achieved. The surfactant-modified clinoptilolite is more efficient than the surfactant-modified chabazite as a carrier for diclofenac sodium.
