Effect of adding copper oxide nanoparticles on the mass/heat transfer in falling film absorption

Absorber is an essential component that affects the efficiency of absorption refrigeration unit. Falling film absorption is one of the most widespread forms of the heat/mass transfer in absorption system. In this paper, based on the software COMSOL Multiphysics, the finite element method is used to establish the model of falling film absorption. The falling film absorption properties of nanofluids was studied by adding CuO nanoparticles. The results reveal that as the film flow rate increases, the average mass transfer flux rises first and then decreases. The average mass transfer flux increases with the rise of the concentration of solution at the inlet, the decrease of the temperature of solution at the inlet and the reduction of cooling water inlet temperature. After adding copper oxide nanoparticles to lithium bromide solution, the vapor absorption performance of lithium bromide solution can be significantly improved.

Evaluation of disinfection byproduct formation from extra- and intra-cellular algal organic matters during chlorination after Fe(VI) oxidation

Blue-green algae commonly bloom in fresh water in summer, producing extra- and intra-cellular algal organic matters, which are important precursors for disinfection byproduct (DBP) formation. In this study, we evaluated the effect of pre-oxidation with ferrate(vi) (FeO42-, Fe(VI)) on the characterization of intracellular organic matter (IOM) and extracellular organic matter (EOM). The results indicated that soluble microbial-like products of EOM and IOM decreased and humic acid-like products of IOM increased, which would influence the DBP formation in the subsequent chlorination step. Therefore, in this study, the effect of Fe(VI) pre-oxidation on the DBP formation from IOM and EOM with subsequent chlorination was also investigated. For Chlorella sp., EOM presented no significant change, and IOM presented a reduction of THMs (8.2%) after Fe(VI) oxidation at a dosage of 16 mg L-1. For P. limnetica, EOM and IOM both exhibited reduction of trihalomethanes (THMs) and chloral hydrate (CH) after Fe(VI) oxidation. Besides, THMs had the lowest concentration at pH 8.0 in all four solutions. Haloacetonitriles (HANs) and haloketones (HKs) showed slight changes with increasing pH values. Due to the frequent detection of bromide (Br-) in surface water, the effect of bromide existence on THM formation was also investigated. The results indicated that all brominated DBPs increased, and chlorinated DBPs decreased with the increase in bromide concentration. In addition, the bromine substitution factor (BSF) of Chlorella sp. and P. limnetica both increased with the increase in Br- concentration.

Morphology Control of Liposome – RAFT Oligomer Precursors to Complex Polymer Nanostructures

Different types of butyl acrylate (BA)-co-acrylic acid (AA) oligomers were synthesized via reversible addition-fragmentation chain transfer (RAFT) polymerization and mixed with extruded 200 nm dimethyldioctadecylammonium bromide vesicles. The resulting precursor structures form the basis for subsequent vesicle-templated polymerizations. Systematic variations in temperature, pH, oligomer length, and oligomer composition and their effects on precursor morphology were studied. Surprisingly, different morphologies were obtained, including capsules, protruded capsules, solid spheres, and multicompartment structures. For example, capsules and multicompartment structures were found to result from higher AA contents, and protruded capsules and solid particles resulted from lower AA contents. Subsequent chain extension of the RAFT oligomers resulted in polymer nanostructures resembling the precursor morphologies.

ROS Plays a Role in the Neonatal Rat Intestinal Barrier Damages Induced by Hyperoxia

Background. Hyperoxia treats a subset of critical neonatal illnesses but induces intestinal damage in neonatal pups. In this process, the intestinal flora and mucosal epithelium might be altered by hyperoxia. So the changes of the intestinal flora and mucosal epithelium were studied. Methods. Neonatal rats were randomized into the model group that was exposed to hyperoxia and the control group that was maintained under normoxic conditions; then, intestinal lavage fluid and intestinal tissues were harvested. ELISA was used to detect D-lactic acid (D-LA), endotoxin (ET), diamine oxidase (DAO), intestinal fatty acid binding protein (i-FABP), liver-type fatty acid binding protein (L-FABP) and cytokines in the intestinal lavage of neonatal rats during hyperoxia. The intestinal zonula occluden-1 (ZO-1), occlusion protein (Occludin), and closure protein-4 (Claudin-4) of neonatal pups were detected by immunohistochemistry, western blotting, and real-time Polymerase chain reaction (RT-PCR) during hyperoxia. NCM460 cell survival rates were assayed by 3-(4,5-dimethylthiazol-2-yl)-2,5-diphenyltetrazolium bromide (MTT) during hyperoxia and administration of N-acetyl-L-cysteine (NAC). The expression levels of ZO-1, Occludin, and Claudin-4 in NCM460 cells were detected by immunohistochemistry, western blotting, and RT-PCR during hyperoxia and NAC. Results. D-LA, ET, L-FABP, i-FABP, DAO, TNF-alpha, IL-10, and IFN-gamma were significantly increased by hyperoxia, while ZO-1, Occludin, and Claudin-4 were clearly decreased in the hyperoxia group compared with the control group. NAC promoted cell survival, which was inhibited by hyperoxia. The cellular expression levels of ZO-1, Occludin, and Claudin-4, which were lowered by hyperoxia, were increased by NAC. Conclusion. Long term impact of surfactants & polymers on the colloidal stability, aggregation and dissolution of silver nanoparticles

Cetyl trimethyl ammonium bromide (CTAB), Tween 20, polyvinyl pyrrolidone (PVP) and polyethylene glycol (PEG) are among the commonly used surfactants and polymers to stabilize silver nanoparticles (AgNPs). However, their interactions with AgNPs are different. The impact of these surfactants and polymers on the colloidal stability of freshly synthesized uncoated AgNPs was evaluated through a series of long-term experiments and analyzed in terms of their physical and chemical behavior. The cationic surfactant, CTAB was able to produce a mono modal particle size distribution in a prolonged period without affecting the dissolution. In the presence of Tween 20, a non-ionic surfactant, dissolution was promoted in the long run and the particles were preserved with minimal aggregation. In the presence of the polymers, PVP and PEG, the particle structure was not affected even though dissolution was observed. This study presents important insights on the interactions of AgNPs with surfactants and polymers, which could significantly affect the transformations and fate of AgNPs in the aquatic environment.

Detection of Tumor Marker Using ZnO@Reduced Graphene Oxide Decorated with Alkaline Phosphatase-Labeled Magnetic Beads

The magnetic-bead-based electrochemical enzyme-linked immunoassay (MB-eElisa) represents an attractive approach to develop cost-effective systems that are suitable for sensing complex biological samples. Its sensitivity essentially depends on the transduction efficiency of enzyme catalytic reactions into electrochemical responses. Here, an ultrahigh signal-to-noise alkaline phosphatase (ALP)-based MB-eElisa system is developed with a renewable zinc oxide-reduced graphene oxide composite modified carbon paste electrode (ZnO@rGO/CPE). This biosensing system employs one antibody decorated MB (MB-Ab(1)) to capture a model tumor marker-carcinoembryonic antigen (CEA)-from samples, while other antibody coated gold nanoparticles-ALP bioconjugates (Ab(2)-AuNPs-ALP) convert 1-naphthyl phosphate (1-NPP) into electroactive 1-naphthol (1-NP). Benefitting from the unique electrochemical properties of a ZnO@rGO/CPE, including nearly zero background and significantly enhanced responses toward the hydrolyzed 1-NP in the presence of trace surfactants, the MB-eElisa system detects selectively CEA in a calibration range of 0.01-6.0 ng mL(-1) and with a detection limit of 4.0 pg mL(-1) (S/N = 3). Such a system was further applied to the detection of CEA in serum samples of cancer patients. The combination of MB-based ALP-linked immunoassay with a ZnO@rGO/CPE thus establishes a reusable and inexpensive electrochemical sensing platform for the rapid and sensitive detection of ultratrace biomarkers in complex biological samples.

First and Second Law Analyses of Double Effect Parallel and Series Flow Direct Fired Absorption Cycles for Optimum Operating Parameters

Thermodynamic analysis of double effect parallel and series flow direct fired absorption systems with lithium bromide-water has been carried out for different operating conditions. Temperatures in primary generator (T-g) and secondary generator (T-gs)/secondary condenser (T-cs) are optimized analytically using an iterative technique for maximum coefficient of performance (COP) and minimum energy required. A solution distribution ratio for a parallel flow cycle is also optimized. Source of energy used to drive the cycles is considered as compressed natural gas (CNG) and liquefied petroleum gas (LPG). Exergy destruction rate (EDR) in individual components as well as in the whole cycle along with volume flow rate of LPG and CNG is presented and compared. Results show that maximum COP for the parallel flow cycle is 3-6% higher than the series flow cycle. Also, minimum EDR of the parallel flow cycle is around 4% less while energy consumption is 2-3% low as compared to the series flow cycle.

Synthesis and emission characteristics of lead-free novel Cs4SnBr6/SiO2 nanocomposite

Evaluation and conceptual design of triphenylphosphonium bromide-based deep eutectic solvent as novel thermal nanofluid for concentrated solar power

In a concentrated solar power (CSP) plant, an increase of heat transfer effect of the working fluid is a key deliverable which is usually obtained by enhancing its thermo-physical properties. The current work reports the synthesis of heat transfer fluids (HTF) based on deep eutectic solvents (DESs) consisting of a hydrogen bond donor (HBD), namely, triphenylphosphonium bromide, and a hydrogen bond acceptor (HBA), namely, ethylene glycol. Initially, the thermophysical properties, namely, density, viscosity, thermal conductivity (TC) and specific heat capacity were measured and compared with the conventional solvents. The properties were further enhanced by the dispersion of spherical Al2O3 nanoparticles in DESs. The alumina nanoparticles were found to have a negligible effect on the physical properties (density and viscosity) of the base fluid, thereby limiting the pressure drop and also the coefficient of friction. For their potential application as thermal fluids for CSP plants, the thermal properties of DESs and nanoparticle dispersed deep eutectic solvents (NDDESs) were measured within a temperature range of 25-60 degrees C. The TC of 1 wt% Al2O3 with the base fluid was around eight times higher than the base DES. It was found that the TCs of DES and NDDES were higher when compared to the commercial HTF, namely, Therminol VP-1. Eventually, the Aspen plus flowsheet was conceptualized to ascertain the steam generation rate and the overall heat transfer coefficient of these novel solvents. A combination of U-shaped for latent heat and shell and tube heat for sensible heat was employed in the flowsheet. The CSP scheme gave a steam generation rate of 1.7 kg h(-1) at 180 degrees C with a corresponding DES flow rate of 1 m(3) h(-1).
