Widely Tunable, Room Temperature, Single-Mode Lasing Operation from Mixed-Halide Perovskite Thin Films

Solution-processed organic inorganic hybrid perovskites have recently emerged as promising low-cost materials for optoelectronic applications. However, exposure to light or applied bias causes phase separation of mixed-halide perovskites into iodide-rich domains, resulting in the shift of the bandgap energy toward the infrared for light-emitting devices. Proper selection of self-assembled and bulky organoammonium halide additives, 4-fluorobenzylammonium iodide bromide, FPMAI(1-x)Br(x), to the mixed-halide perovskite system, CsxMA(1-x)Pb[I1-xBrx](3) (0 <= x <= 1), exhibits stronger emission and enables stable and low threshold amplified spontaneous emission, which can be tuned over a wide spectral range. Finally, optically pumped surface-emitting distributed feedback lasers operating in a wide spectral range at room temperature are demonstrated for the first time. The laser emission wavelength can be tuned from green to near-infrared by varying the halide stoichiometry in the mixed-halide perovskites. Ultrasmooth mixed-halide perovskites on fused quartz gratings achieve spatially coherent single-mode laser emission with a pump threshold of 4 mu J/cm(2) and less than 0.65 nm full-width at half maximum. The laser device lifetime lasts for up to 42 h (similar to 10(6) laser pulses) under sustained excitation. This work represents a proof-of-concept laser device for practical use in various applications. We develop a molecular thermodynamic theory to study the transmembrane potential of metastable and equilibrium vesicles as a function of the vesicle structural parameters, and salinity and acidity of the surrounding aqueous solution. We show that addition of salt to the external solution may reverse the sign of the transmembrane potential, indicating the reversal of sign of the net charges accumulated in the vesicle interior and exterior. We discuss maxima/minima of the transmembrane potential as a function of added salt and propose a simple formula to estimate the location of these extrema. We demonstrate that a vesicle brought to equilibrium with an acidic environment may take up and hold alkaline solution in its interior. We also show that bending of a symmetrically charged planar membrane leads to a buildup of the transmembrane potential. The catanionic vesicles considered in this work are composed of a series of classical surfactants and model surfactants differing in their molecular structure. These vesicles may serve as a simple prototype for capsules formed by the amphiphilic membranes of a more complex structure, e.g., in nanoreactors or drug-delivery systems.

Thermally stable amine-functionalized silica sorbents using one-pot synthesis method for CO2 capture at low temperature

Amine-functionalized silica sorbents have been widely investigated for post-combustion CO2 capture at low temperature. In previous studies, amine-functionalized silica sorbents were prepared using a synthetic hierarchically porous silica, which is not commercially available in large quantities, because porous silica support structures strongly influence CO2 capture performance. Here, we propose a feasible and facile fabrication method for amine-functionalized silica sorbents using 3-aminopropyltrimethoxy silane (APTS) and fumed silica (FS), where APTS serves as both an active material and a binder. The APTS-functionalized FS sorbents have large amounts of active amino groups and porous structures and demonstrate good multicycle stability with excellent CO2 capture performance. In addition, cetyltrimethylammonium bromide was found to improve the diffusion pathway of CO2, leading to enhanced CO2 capture capacity because of the suppression of excessive condensation during preparation. Therefore, the APTS-functionalized FS sorbents could be cost- and energy-efficiently prepared using a novel one-pot synthesis method; the resulting sorbents exhibit excellent CO2 capture performance.

Design, synthesis and biological evaluation of novel 4-phenoxypyridine based 3-oxo-3,4-dihydroquinoxaline-2-carboxamide derivatives as potential c-Met kinase inhibitors

Blocking c-Met kinase activity by small-molecule inhibitors has been identified as a promising approach for the treatment of cancers. Herein, we described the design, synthesis, and biological evaluation of a series of 4-phenoxypyridine-based 3-oxo-3,4-dihydroquinoxaline derivatives as c-Met kinase inhibitors. Inhibitory activitives against c-Met kinase evaluation indicated that most of compounds showed excellent c-Met kinase activity in vitro, and IC50 values of ten compounds (23a, 23e, 23f, 23l, 23r, 23s, 23v, 23w, 23x and 23y) were less than 10.00 nM. Notably, three of them (23v, 23w and 23y) showed remarkable potency with IC50 values of 2.31 nM, 1.91 nM and 2.44 nM, respectively, and thus they were more potent than positive control drug foretinib (c-Met, IC50 = 2.53 nM). Cytotoxic evaluation indicated the most promising compound 23w showed remarkable cytotoxicity against A549, H460 and HT-29 cell lines with IC50 values of 1.57 mu M, 0.94 mu M and 0.65 mu M, respectively. Furthermore, the acridine orange/ethidium bromide (AO/EB) staining, cell apoptosis assays by flow cytometry, wound-healing assays and transwell migration assays on HT-29 and/or A549 cells of 23w were performed. Especially compound 23w, which displayed potent antitumor, apoptosis induction and antimetastatic activity, could be used as a promising lead for further development. Meanwhile, their preliminary structure-activity relationships (SARs) were also discussed.

Background: Tumor cells that have the ability to express vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF) are more competent to growth and metastasize by the adequate amount of blood and oxygen supply by the blood vessels to the growing mass of cells. Hypoxic tumors are known for its aggressiveness and resistance to the treatment. Targeting VEGF and hypoxia-inducible factor-1 alpha (HIF-1 alpha) is an attractive strategy to interrupt the multiple pathways crucial for tumor growth. In the present study, two thiazole acetamide derivative’s anticancer property, anti VEGF and HIF-1 alpha inhibitory property were investigated. Methodology: Two thiazole acetamide compounds were synthesized, TA1 and TA2 and its anticancer property was studied in Erlich’s ascites cancer cells. To evaluate the anticancer property the assays such as 3-(4,5-dimethylthiazol-2-yl)-2,5-diphenyltetrazolium bromide assay, DNA diffusion assay for apoptosis, and lactate dehydrogenase leakage assay were carried out. The cell culture media was used to assess the secreted VEGF level. Molecular docking studies were performed to analyze the binding efficiency of the study compounds to the kinase insert domain-containing receptor (KDR) and fms-like tyrosine kinase (FLT)-binding domains of VEGF protein. HIF-1 alpha inhibitory study was performed by flow cytometry analysis using HUVEC cell line. Results: The study compounds inhibited HIF-1 alpha and VEGF secretion, these data shown positive prop up for the anticancer property of the derivatives. The docking studies showed moderate binding of study compounds to KDR and FLT-binding domains of VEGF protein. Conclusion: These results conclude the anticancer and anti-angiogenic property of the synthesized thiazole-acetamide derivatives.

Effect of pH and surfactants on the electrokinetic properties of nanoparticles dispersions and their application to the PET fibres modification

This paper presents the effect of surfactants, pH and electrolyte (0.1 x 10(-3) M KCI) on the stability of the aqueous dispersions of commercial ZnO and AgCu nanoparticles. As the surfactants cationic hexadecyltrimethylammonium bromide (CTAB), anionic sodium dodecyl sulfate (SDS), and nonionic 4-(1,1,3,3-tetramethylbutyl)phenyl polyethylene glycol (Triton X-100) at concentrations of 0.5 x 10(-3), 1.0 x 10(-3), and 0.1 x 10(-3) M, respectively, were used. The zeta potential values, z-average hydrodynamic diameter and long-term stability of ZnO and AgCu nanoparticles were examined by means of the dynamic light scattering (DLS) technique. It was found that the presence of ionic surfactants reduced the tendency of nanopartides for agglomeration/aggregation and improved their colloidal stability. They were characterized by high (vertical bar 70 vertical bar mV) and pH-independent zeta potential values. In addition, ZnO nanoparticles in the presence of ionic surfactants showed a better long-term stability than AgCu nanoparticles. Their z-average hydrodynamic diameters in CTAB and SDS were 195 +/- 2 nm and 295 +/- 5 nrn, respectively, and remained almost unchanged for 5 days. The addition of KCl improved the stability of aqueous and containing nonionic surfactant dispersions of nanoparticles, what was reflected in the zeta potential values > 30 mV in almost the entire pH range. The stability of nanoparticles dispersion significantly affects the uniformity of nanoparticles distribution on the fibres surface. Solvent-free and large area compatible deposition of methylammonium lead bromide perovskite by close space sublimation and its application in PIN diodes

In this work, a solvent-free method to deposit in-situ methylammonium lead bromide (MAPbBr(3)) perovskite thin films is discussed. Spin-coating methods used for hybrid perovskite deposition typically use solvents that might remain in the films after processing, potentially causing accelerated film degradation. Furthermore, spin-coating might not be suitable for applications that require thick films (>500 nm). To address these issues, a close space sublimation process was implemented to deposit solvent-free and in-situ MAPbBr(3) films with variable thicknesses. A post-deposition annealing protocol was developed that results in smooth perovskite films as thick as 3 mu m. Post-deposition anneal also reduces a photoluminescence emission band that originates from surface defects. The resulting films were chemically, optically and structurally studied and hysteresis-free PIN diodes with metal-oxide semiconductors as p and n-type layers were fabricated and analyzed. The results indicate that high quality perovskite films with variable thickness can be obtained by the close space sublimation (CSS) process demonstrated here. Although MAPbBr(3) was selected for this study, this CSS method demonstrated can be easily applied to other hybrid perovskites.

Biocompatibility and mechanical properties evaluation of chitosan films containing an N-acylhydrazonic derivative

The N-acylhydrazone subunit is considered a privileged structure in medicinal chemistry for its importance in pharmaceutical research. Also, alternative methods to deliver these molecules have a great pharmaceutical interest. Therefore, the objective of this work was to encapsulate JR19, an N-acyl hydrazone subunit, into chitosan films and evaluate several properties relevant for transdermal delivery, including biocompatibility using in vitro tests. CHI + JR19 film demonstrates greater strength, flexibility, water absorption capacity, low contact angle and higher surface roughness when compared to CHI. Agar diffusion and 3-(4,5-dimethyl)-2,5-diphenyl tetra-zolium bromide (MTT) assay show the absence of cytotoxicity and the higher cell viability for CHI + JR19 films. Therefore, the addition of JR19 in the system positively influenced mechanical properties and granted better compatibility with biological environments, showing the potential to treat skin inflammation.
